Some probably miss the beginning of the film where the guy was talking about how media perceptions of comfortable, wealthy and great lives and jobs awaiting in the West, are the some of the things that drive Malians and their neighbors in other countries to travel to the west not realizing that in reality nothing is as it seems. Actually, many slaves were sold from South, especially North, and even East Africa as well, however you are correct that the majority came from the West.

Indigenous Berbers were black, and most are today.

Many are lighter but you forget that North Africa was conquered by Europeans, and at different times many Christian Europeans, mainly from Southern Europe were taken as slaves.
