  • I've been saying this since i was 15.

  • The way he talks reminds me of the Sweede from the show Hell on Wheels :D

  • @TEDtalksDirector I beg you, do 'not' cut off the very end of the talk, many of us enjoy seeing the response of the crowd, it would only have been an additional few moments...

It's to the point many of us who frequent this channel have a very strong feeling amongst ourselves that we're entirely ignored. The volume for the into on those particular video's has never been adjusted down, to the discomfort of many users, and now this. It's youtube's bandwidth, not yours! Why edit like this?!? :(

  • Goverments want to protect us from terrorists? by going through our mail? by doing things that are against our will. Sounds a lot like I,Robot. Soon we will all be in a cage and fed through a tube, then surely no one can harm anyone.

  • A+++ for this talk!

  • Increasingly relevant subjects... Not a lot of people explaining in layman's terms what's going on with all them 0's and 1's. Thanks!

  • he kinda reminds me of Peter Kavanagh from Stargate Atlantis.

  • so is this news? lol what a faggot...

  • If privacy as he stated is not up to question and is highly important, then what about the privacy of terrorists? Who knows by tapping on their mail may save many lives. Not tapping and letting citizens keep their privacy may cost that same number of lives which could be saved.

On the other hand... Privacy is important but to what extent? I guess if we're all law abiding citizens it does not matter. Plus they have millions of citizens, they would have to sieve through the info... Meaning if yo

  • I think security will save us from being secure...

  • How come nobody's mentioning how hot he is or is not? Every TED talk with a woman speaker seems to be subject to all the comments being about how a woman looks like this or that or "has balls". Its fucking sad. Another good TED talk, but the bitter truth is very clear.

  • I wonder if this guy is still alive?

  • he says online viruses are created by western gov'ts?!?

  • @interstellarwonder yes, that's true. Try googling for stuxnet.

  • it's funny if you know what the old Anonymous was like

  • Did anyone else initially read that name as "Harkonnen"?

  • He's da bomb!

  • If security made any logical sense, it wouldn't exist. To be safe is to not need security.

  • those who give up freedom for a little security will lose both and deserve neither.

  • @GegoXaren if you're gonna quote Benjamin Franklin at least give him the credit.

  • Is anyone else noticing a subtle but ominous "buzz" in the background?

  • privacy totally violated and freedom... what freedom?

  • Well fuck...

  • this guy is a great talker.

  • Get out your led flashligh, get out your magnifying glass, and voila you get yellow dots.

NO JOKE they are there. I have a HP printer and the page is covered in YELLO DOTS.

    – I'm going to get a refund form HP for using up my yellow toner!

  • I can easily answer the question of "do I trust any future government because I trust the current one?"

NO! No I don't. I don't even trust the current government on the issues raised in this talk, despite having elected it. The short version is: We're all f*cked, Huxley was right.

  • 5 stars.

  • Can anybody please point us to the particulars of the color lazer prints be traced to the machine of origin? If its true, lets keep the old machines longer, hoping the manufacturers will notice. Guess I should not have thrown away my old daisy wheel printer so soon. ;-)

  • That guy scared me. I'm gonna check my bank account right now... Ah! Everything's fine. It's still at zero.

  • @KlipKultur5 " Ah! Everything's fine. It's still at zero."

-I guess america will be safe when their money becomes worthless and nobody will want it.

  • Liberty

  • When the Government fears the people you have Democracy. When the people fear the Government You have Tyranny..

  • @jewster1

If you're gonna quote Thomas Jefferson, at least give him the credit.

  • god i hate shit like this, i mean the stuff hes talking about like the printer finger prints etc.

the worlds turning into such a shit hole where the rich roam supreme, got the cash you can get rid off all this stuff we use to watch you if you dont well were gonna twist your arm over something as small as littering.

  • 7:01 Dude's like "Yep, I brokered that deal. Made a cooool flat mil."

  • I agree that Mr. Mikko Hypponen made some valid points, though I feel that lies never stay hidden and that no one true intents can be concealed, so I don't mind people tapping or doing what ever they feel they need to do because they're going to do it anyways just not tell you. I suggest you just act respectfully and accordingly the ethics and morals that have been the standard behavior of all citizens, so when fabrication or anything is brought against you that same technology can help you.

  • The government could go and fuck itselfs, just a bunch of psycophats..

  • Comment removed

  • I agree.

  • Anyone else thinking 1984 was not a guide for governments, it was meant to be a worst case scenario work of fiction? George Orwell fans may now begin to shudder.

  • 8:45 "while we might trust our government right now" ... Does anyone actually trust their government??

  • @HoofSupport sure, i trust them. but only because laws keep them in check. if they keep chipping away at these laws, changing them and bending them - people won't realise until it's too late.

  • @SobaniForce Gov officials don't generally obey the law at all. That's the problem.

  • nice

  • @OldSchoolSkill

In this case, its actually not the government. The manufacturers of printers did it VOLUNTARILY on a global level without any government forcing them to do it. In the free world you can easily buy your printer anonymously, just go to an electronics store and pay with cash. These spineless printer companies just want to have it in place so that corrupt, totalitarian regimes will choose their printers.

They did it just for money, without pressure.

  • 1. SOPA

    2. sopa

    3. SOPA

  • @hempartist420 the Anonymous group state that Anonymous is an idea. You follow/believe in the idea or you don't. Usually, we use Anonymous to refer to the people, not the idea. Generally, they are computer hackers, but they promoted filming policemen to see if they're corrupt, since it's not illegal, and they support the Occupy protests. It's like how a religion is an idea, but Christianity didn't build churches, Christians did.

  • and they hacked it DAMN THOROUGHLY

  • Incredible..

  • At least, with online crime, I can try to defend myself by doing things like using Linux.

Trying to defend myself against "real world" crime is impossible, since government is the biggest criminal of all.

  • @CurtHowland unless the availability of linux is only to lul you into a false sense of securit*Censored by the Department of Internal Security"

  • @LeadPaintSandwich No, Linux is more secure by design. A user cannot have root level priviliges by design.

Windows has always been less secure, because Windows has deep kernel functions for user programs. Still does, even in Win7. And, I'm sure, in Win8. That's just the "insecure by design" that Windows is.

  • @CurtHowland good point

  • notice @4:20, how he sighs, he is going to get hurt, killed or worse by either his country or another for saying this and I think he knows it.

  • Mikko Hypponen looks like a Finnish name ...is Finland considered "those of us from the west"

    just a thought

  • @gaiagale back in the day as long as you were west of the Berlin Wall, yes.

  • @Shinhaquro that was quick! ...thanks a bunch ;-])

  • @gaiagale Politically and culturally, yes.

  • @82blastoff thanks for seeing my comment and for making time to reply...when I reflect on my comment as well the replies I'm of the opinion that an answer would depend entirely on ones perspective

living in the most western province of Canada even I could say of course Finland is part of the west yet I can say with equal conviction Finland is part of the east (I've always flown eastwardly to get there)

thank-you ...your reply has been food for thought

  • 'MERICA

  • I'm curious now ...can I detect a trojen on my computer? ...does anyone know?

    thanks

  • Anomanous has a good idea, but sometimes it gets a bit to harsh

  • what about white & black supremacist trolls who spread hatred all over youtube?

  • No applause? cut off soon? I see what you did there.

    attack 2 fights for freedom.

  • Germany is the west.. it's just as advanced as the united states or any other european country... And I I'm not german at all

  • Finally some computernerd stuff in TED.

  • @CognosSquare There is another talk on TED about cyber security as well...

  • attack 1 + attack 3 = corporate attack, where 'attack' 2 = resistance.

  • *They* already know that you just watched this video!

  • we do not forgive, we do not forget

  • @benji014 Then you are a fool.

  • @egganaut No sir, you are a fool if you do forget.

  • @benji014 The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naive forgive and forget; the wise forgive but do not forget.

  • this guy is a legend, really knows his stuff. always educational.

  • I don't trust ANY government now. I want to be able to trust the futures ones....

  • what about the malicious attack.

  • 5:25

    Silence in the auditorium.

  • 7:01 The guy in the middle did something similar of what he's talking about, the guy on the right knows he did ^^

  • Anonymous is not a group, but are ideals.. Ideas of people on the internet. They do not steal, they do not harm. They defend our freedom!

  • @Youloeka well they harm quite a bit ;)

  • @Youloeka

Clearly one dumb thing about "Anonymous" is that it was based on anons at 4chan.

That itself is so stupid you know it's not going to be serious or to last.

    Read their rules.

And it seems like Anonymous is like a band that had one good hit album and that was it.

There's not so many people on those IRC's anymore.

  • @Youloeka Very True!

  • @Youloeka And Ideas are bulletproof :P

  • @Youloeka That's like saying the KKK is not a group, but ideals. Wake up.

  • @Youloeka

    "They do not steal" Wrong

"They do not harm" Wrong again.

  • great talk!

  • Interesting

  • @elivasfq you spelled corporate wrong lol

  • 0:15

  • ...2012 will indeed raise the human awareness, the freedom has begun!!

  • @braveGurkhali wtf are you talking about? O.o

  • @SlimfullSim2 hahahaa...simply playing.....to paraphrase this could be just the tip of an iceberg, there must be many such methods and technologies for same purpose which we dont know.

  • do they do this in the UK?

  • @munchegod You can bet your mothers ASS on it!

  • @axel1973w I can't see any yellow dots hmmm

  • there are 3 rules that can be easily followed and save you from robbery, imprisonment and death: stay anon, do not run proprietary garbage on your machines, use encryption.

  • More in depth version of this talk

    watch?v=WQgeUHlTThc

Top quality speaker, knows his domain, clear message and good talk. Worthy of being on TED.

  • best ted talk ever

  • more from this guy

  • has anyone gotten the Win 7 Security 2012 or the like that completely installs itself without you doing anything to make it happen and then hijacks your firewall which then tells you that your computer is infected with like 60 trojans and worms. Anyone?

  • The yellow dots is to prevent counterfeiting currency as well as track who/where it came from.

  • Finns = awesome.

  • use LINUX!

    Stop UEFI Secure Boot!

  • windows = trojan horse. use LINUX!

  • Hypponen must be an action movie star

  • coolest speaker so far!

  • strong message

  • Thumbs up if you just printed something out to look for those yellow dots!! O_O

  • @Films4You I found your comment flagged as spam ...after read I'm more than a little curious as to why

thanks for making time to share

  • Nice talk. Our rights should not be given up!

  • tracking by the printer is old news. I saw this one documentary it was used to catch a serial killer. so you can argue security vs freedom

  • thus guy is so funny and so full of himself lol

  • @PR0H0LDEM what?!? ...he's confident because he's done his homework so he speaks the truth

  • PIGS are so sneaky....spying is alive and well in the fascist states of america

  • Is there something wrong with me for thinking this speaker would be a Japanese girl?

  • While you are watching this, The big brothers are breathing down the back of your neck. Sooo sickening, Man!

  • @nukube Yeah man, you got to be careful. Block any webcam attached to your computers, I heard some people in government get their kicks off it.

  • Ted, your intro and outro's suck. They are too god damn loud and people have been telling you that for at least a year now. Fix it!

  • @bweazel I agree it is too loud still ...even though the volume was reduce considerably some months ago now ...thanks for making time to share your thoughts regarding the volume 'til I read your comment I thought I was the only one that still considers them too loud ;-])

  • So does anyone know anything more about that printer dots thing? I've never heard of that and now I'm kind of mad.

  • Yay this guy again!

  • Wtf? They can track you by your printer?

  • Vote Pirates! Wait...there is no Pirate Party in the U.S.

  • 4 type of online attack - the corparate attack.

  • @Elivasfq that's a subset of type 1, silly

  • @Elivasfq Corporations = government

  • @deejayedwards that is a very over simplified statement. Though not entirely untrue.

  • @Elivasfq

That is just a combination of 1 and 3.

  • "And you might trust your government now...but will you trust the government of the future?"

WHAT???? Trust the government? Anyone who trust the government now is BLIND. MDAA, SOPA, PIPA, SUPERPACS, CITIZENS UNITED, and THE DRUG WAR. No, the government does not speak for me. It does not speak for anyone who makes less than a million a year. It is the oppressor and it must be changed.

  • @CptMcClain

Not everyone lives under the US Government. :)

  • @CptMcClain There are more governments than the American one.

  • @CptMcClain Not everybody lives in the USA you know, there are countries besides America, where you can have faith in your government.

  • @CptMcClain I think you mean NDAA, but I agree, it's all BS.

  • Good speaker. Interesting talk.

  • use LINUX!

  • @pixelr0 If enough people started using linux, the pirates would just start writing viruses for Linux instead.

  • @pixelr0 Use Linux? Ummm, why?

  • @pixelr0 because linux magically cloaks all your communications, modifies your printer hardware and defeats SOPA/PIPA? Linux would not prevent ANYTHING he talked about in this video. Spend some time investigating computer security, you'll find that Linux is very easy to hack. Browse a hacking forum for a while and see the various exploits which exist. Linux isn't a magical answer to our political apathy.

  • @shiftplusone80 You're absolutly right. Linux is not, by itself, a "magic" solution for security and privacy.

  • My eyes hear you loud and clear, even if my ears can't feel you, and my fingers can't smell you. And you can be sure my nose is watching you, yes indeed.

Oh, about attacks on the internet, I never do it.

  • it is clear TED is against SOPA..... GO TED :D

  • Nice! Follow-up talk! :D

  • and the attacks for the lulz? he didnt mention that

  • @epicnidhogg He describe hacktivists as being "motivated by the laughs", so he did mention it ;) (Around 4:03)

  • @Havvdon ohh i didnt notice that :D

  • It is still useful info ~

  • What's so new about all this?

  • @maximusg88 that people above the age of 30 who don't have glasses and ponytails get educated about this and they might actually understand it.

  • @rakketakke but still... if you read newspapers from time to time you should know about that... ponytail or not :)))

  • @maximusg88 old timmers don't know about this, only young kids

  • i knew about the printers looong ago... makes you paranoid.

  • I saw this on TEDxTalks ages ago.

  • @TheGerogero that would make you a Boss.

  • @TheGerogero Yeah, strang ethat they should repeat it today. Wonder if there could be any reason for that.

  • Great video! Thanks TED!

  • 0:15

  • three sources, not types
