I had recently heard that the "cuttter " was an ass-beatin' - that was what the gang in 'ClockWorkOrange" had done to their victims. "SPARE us the cutter!! " That is what was overheard by the victim. Still have no clue of what the song means , but what a beautiful song it is!
I perceive it as being about redemption and purification. I perceive the cutter as being the scythe of death. The proverbial cutting to separate the wheat from the chaff.
@MsPersephoneX: been listening to The Bunnymen since 1983 so add these line to your musings and you got it (resurrection): "conquering myself until I see another hurdle approaching, say we can, say we will, not just another drop in the ocean"...PS: you have a couple lines off. Also check out: Over the Wall
@smwired1 The charts were shit but there was a lot of great music being made but most of the good stuff never sold in large amounts and the radio wouldn't play it.
Seeing as most people in their 60's like to listen to the music from their younger days, does that mean when I'm 60+ I will be listening to Echo, Depech Mode, Flock of Seagulls, the Cult?
If you don't like something and it doesn't hurt anyone why do you watch it and bellyache, tossers ? Most of you wern't born when the seeds of current music was taking its formative steps without pioneers of indie music you would not have what you have now.
@ timmelville ... Eat shit and did your self u pompous idiot! Who gave you the authority to make such assinine judgment regarding music? It just your opinion. Which by the way sux... culture vomit... there is no reason for this to exist... this song made me a cutter i swear to god i would rather watch an orphanage burn to the ground than to ever witness this again.... if you can break this song down in music theory and explain to me the complexities of why it is good i may agree with you at least on some level but if all you have to offer is great memories due to massive amounts of cocaine blended with this song in the background you should rethink your past... and die
@timmelville That is really sad. Sounds like you made some really poor choices and now listening to Echo and the Bunnymen brings back some bad memories. Move on you will do much better for it!
Absolutely F'ing COOL from the 80's! The decade that will never be repeated! No music will ever be able to compete with what we had during that time!!!!
There is a Smiths song that sings about "he couldn't cut the mustard", I can't find it though. Any hints? Hard to remeber after all those drunken nights of 25 years since gone by.

@habana999 the annoying thing is, no one's going to listen then "dislike", they're going to get 5 seconds in then "dislike" so their opinion is worth shit. However, TUNE!
I love the Bass on this song! Comes in second to the Beatles "Rain"... as far as the Bass Guitar is concerned... For me, any how! And what a GREAT song to dance to! I miss the 80's, and I miss Los Angeles!
@5eurocups2005 Well said, despite your use of the vernacular. :-) There is a rich, creative quality to this and other Bunnymen songs which the current John Mayer and mainstream rock totally lack.

I suppose most of their listeners are teenagers - mid twenties. I'm 18 years old myself and my dad got me into this band when I was really young. I'm just disappointed in my generation for their lack in respect for songs like this that are clearly going to last in comparison to dull throw-away pop-indie anthems that are ten a penny.
I saw Echo live in the mid- eighties at Jones Beach Theater on LI. The opening acts were Gene Loves Jezebel and New Order. Definately three bands you would'nt expect in a beach enviroment. I read later that Echo and New Order were not friendly to each other and both bands completely ignored Jezebel on that tour.
