if you listen to Oldfield's contributions to Ayers' recordings, you will hear many little riffs & phrases which show up a little later in Tubular Bells & even Hergest Ridge
This music is so goddamn chilling. I just love Kevin Ayers for the sake of delivering at about some of the best shit i've ever heard to my ears. May Kevin never die. And seriously, he's like 60 now and still looks just the same as when he was 20. Weird, funny guy. Awesome song. Plus: "You're such a fat lady" hilarious metaphor.

Wow this is so sweet. I always loved Kevin Ayers for being so lyrical, airy and unpretentious and in the meanwhile making great, lovely.,lovable music.
The man is the paragon of playfulness, and at 5 ft 1 my favorite garden g nome with the deepest richest voice I could wish for.
And then Mike Oldfield, in his midteens playing like a young god. Makes me wonder how I could have neglected this music in the last ten, fifteen years. Clearly withstood the test of time. Way to go!!
whatever point you are trying to make is utterly lost on me,as I have not ventured an opinion on Kevin Ayers,Kevin Kline,or even Kevin Keegan. You should address your bitchy little girl comments to my visiting brother who used my PC to voice his own views under my username. In the mean time grow up.
The thing is Kevin Ayers could, can, write songs and when you add great musicians who are not show-offs, such as Mike Oldfield, the result is sublime.
A rare example of real lyricisim in rock music, there is a strong argument , not that I want to argue with anyone, that it never realy got any better after this period with the Canterbury bands, just more histrionic, over produced and either too serious or completely trivial.
After the magic promise of "May I" Kevin Ayers lost his track (if he ever'd had one!). [Mike is here recycling some Floyd sugar, but you can tell his gameplay is not Ayers's]
What a very odd thing to say, especially as it isn't true.
I'd be interested to know precisely what "Floyd sugar" Mike Oldfield is supposed to be recycling here. I've certainly never heard David Gilmour play in this style.
@evajom1 - Why can't I just say what I think without next door's Canterbury zealot sticking out his bald bearded head to proclaim once more what's True?
@evajom1 - Read your own words, you old fart/hag/whatever: You couldn't make my point any better, could you? Just because back then you'd still manage to get laid, it doesn't make that music ALL good.
Some was, some not; you may either come to grips with this simple fact or stay stuck right where you are, constipated in head and arse. WhateveryouchooseIcouldn'tcareless. Get lost.
You are without doubt the biggest wanker ever to post a comment on this particular thread.
You've been utterly trounced by evajom1, but you're too stupid to realise it.
What do you think you achieve by making personal insults against a person you have never met, and whose age, physical appearance and success or failure in life cannot possibly be known to you?
Also, why are you so verbally aggressive and cruel? I think you probably need some kind of help.
@TheMarcoFaust You must have got your friends to give you the thumbs-up for this inane remark. Why does having an opinion that differs from yours make somebody a "Canterbury zealot", and why do you assume that someone you have never seen is bald or bearded, or that it matters one bit if he actually is?
I suspect that you are just trying to deflect the question about the particular aspects of David Gilmour's guitar style that you have claimed, without evidence, to have influenced Oldfield's.
Yes it is isn't it. Mike Oldfield's solo is truly fantastic. Oldfield was about 19 or so when he played this. Have you heard the BBC session where Mike was rehearsing a part of Tubular Bells in Why are we sleeping? It's fantastic
No, unfortunately it isn't. However, I see sbritt uploaded Lady Rachel from the same gig (BBC 1972) 3 days ago so maybe if you ask him nicely............!
this is soooooo good. brings back great memory of kevin ayres and the whole world at the maryland in glasgow with a 17 yrs old mike oldfield blowing us away with his smooth haunting guitar playing n lol coxhill wild on sax. ahhhhhh..great!
Mike borrowed a Bang and Olafsen tape recorder from Kevin Ayers on which he recorded the "demo" tapes for Tubular Bells. You are right in saying that there are distinct similarities between Tubular Bells and The Whole World.
Oldfield is indeed a very under-rated musician.
It is wonderful to hear them working together like this
Thanks for sharing this! Where did you get all these ancient pictures?

Mike's trademark guitar sound is so apparent here, long before his solo career took off.
The guitar solo on this track clearly sounds like early sketches of the guitar solo at the end of Tubular Bells Side 2.
Mike Oldfield is a great, but very underrated guitarist, an unsung guitar hero.
