@superchaoo7 i think it's just around 3.5 G.. the usual takeoff speed is 130 kts which is 66 m/s, the plane reaches that speed in about 2 sec.. 66/2 = 33m/s*s acceleration, that means 33/9.8 ~= 3.5 G

Engineers are the most important thing that goes into making the plane for sure, but pilots arnt just dumb pricks who doesnt know anything about how planes work, they were probably intersted in aircraft and decided they wanted to be a pilot when they grow up.

They only seem like the arrogant type as an inherent effect of the job they have, adrenaline pumping heart pounding action and speed can tend to do that to a person. These guy's are extremely fit and extremely knowledgeable, you don't just walk up to the Air Force and say "I want to be a fighter pilot" and suddenly you get your wings, trust me its not easy, and takes a ton of effort and knowledge to become a fighter pilot.

Ya only around the top 10% are tactical combat pilots in the USAF. Does anyone know if that's changed?

And yeah, those figures are still correct, in fact i think it's even less now with the number of UAV's and the price of planes going up and the effectiveness of one plane going up, the Air Force is downsizing.

@navyguardf18 I'd reccomend being one before spitting all your money away on college, you'll get to know the planes, and the NAVY/AF will pay for your college and then you can become a fighter pilot, that's what I'm gonna do.

aliennorz.. really.. yea engineers are very talented and important for the build of the plane but what about the crew that builds it, takes care of it on the carrier, repairs it, lauches it and last but not least, flyes it. oh yeah.. and guys maintaining it? what about those guys that keep the engineers work of art flying? its not like you join the navy and can hop in an F18. takes time and skills to master flying a plane at the speed of sound

Pilots are chosen for their ability to handle tough physical environments, their situational awareness, their ability to multi-task and make snap decisions under physical & mental stress. They are consummate system managers and tacticians. Engineers are celebrated in their own right. As one of my engineering profs told us, engineers are essentially creative problem solvers. The thing is, being a pilot is just plain sexier.
