  • The bad thing about taking art courses is, there isnt many artists in the class. You see, a true artist is dynamic in thought(the philosophers mind) It requires left hemisphere rational, which unfortunately has been filtered out by governmental indoctrination. A true artist is deeply emotional & intuitive, with an unconscious projection of imagery obtained thru a sleeping mathematical geometry of thought. The free thinking mysticist & hopeful dreamer, who dreams in foreward & backwards time.

  • This is great! Recompense for the wicked. Don't worry, the so-called white man and his woman are going into slavery under the so-called black man. She[the white woman] will delight in serving her dark skinned master for all eternity :))

"Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of YHWH: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her."- Yirmeyahu 50:15

  • its usually pictures of black guys fucking white girls that are making the money but you wont find those pictures on the wall of our guilt ridden, leftist, liberal elite.

  • @tjmac7 Your an idiot with all your liberal reteric.. Its corupt from the top on down. It doesnt matter who is president, they ALL work for the criminal bankers. Wake the hell up you ignorant fool. There isnt some liberal citizen group running around ruining the world, its just the politicians & corporations that dont speak for the people. Why dont you get out of paradigm & start to realize your neigbors are in the same boat. None of these definitions in politics match the dictionary.

  • @LendMeYourHand -Your? reteric? corupt?...And i'm the fucking idiot.

  • @tjmac7 Did you get the message? And it didnt wake you out of any moronic way of thinking? You start your analysis by spell checking? But you cant even address the issue? You seem to think that spelling is this great decider of wisdom. Seriously, thats all you got? Hey, lets worry about spelling while you can only seem to produce one sentence. I however took advantage of every character, as i know people realy need more to get past standard thinking. Unfortunately, YOU'RE a standard thinker.

  • @LendMeYourHand - It's spelled 'really'. Sorry that's all i got, i didn't like the picture anyway and the teacher looks too much like Mr Garrison to take seriously.

  • "Oh that's right, your degree was in feminism..."

    Wait, what?

  • teacher looks for candidate to fulfill fantasy

  • teacher looks for a candidate to fulfill fantasy

  • wow really? are these kids even in collage?

  • @graffnameseed

Wow, really? What "collage" did you go to, graffnameseed? Or was the GED exam too hard?

  • @Bossk333 "sarcasim" nope i fist pumped my way through it like a champ

  • Why? That made no sense....

  • Why?

  • I'm sorry but... are these really college students? I'm at a loss for words. I would seriously hope that they would be more open about art and conversing about it. Kara Walker, in my opinion, is the best artist of the 21st century and her work is so packed with history, fiction, and everything in between that whole books could be written about it. In fact, there have been full books about it! When art students only have five words to say about a Kara Walker piece... a sad day, in my opinion.

  • man these kids seem like idiots

  • This is so stupid. I fucking hate art students.

  • 2:25 - one sexy piece of chocolate right there, yes sir.

  • And what was so shocking about it?

The initial laughter of one African American women when she first saw the picture? The statements that the image was disgusting, just seconds later? Or the fact that the artist being an African American woman makes the picture being "non-racist", according to some students?

To me it looked like a caricature, so investing some thought about the intention should be mandatory.

What's very apparent to me is the prudery of those students (I'm European).

  • Sorry for the error. It should be: "...laughter of one of the African American women...."

  • Are these really 8th semester students in NYC?

  • 8th semester?? What a bunch of ignorant little kids

  • I think the video is about how to quote a racist concept. I use quote in the sense that the artist would not want to act like the image portrays. The image is hardcore racist ideology. In the U.S. the impact is greater because sex is taboo subject to discourse about. Showing a more historical image of black workers on plantations with white overseers in the scene. Showing an image like that shows 'racism' too, but the quoting context is clear.

  • only FUCKING IDIOTS WHO TAKE TYPING IN CAPS AS AN INSULT. you really need to get a life OUTSIDE OF THE INTERNET WORLD!! BITCH!!

  • bitch WHITE FEMALES PAY US FOR SEX MUTHAFUCKA WE DONT NEED TO RAPE THEM YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN. and wtf IS UP WITH THE OWN VICTIM HOOD. we dont control THE ECONOMY. we dont CONTROL THE FUNDING OF SCHOOLS. we dont control the BUSINESS PLACEMENT and layouts FOR NEW TECHNO BUILDINGS BITCH!! you know nothing ABOUT LIFE MUTHAFUCKA!!

  • hahaha

you're a complete idiot; racism started at the frankfurt school in 1936? hahahahaha

before that white devils in u.s. didnt hate the poor black slaves and jim crow oppressed blacks? hahahahahah

  • The teacher sounds drunk.

  • Really daoc88 you ignorant AZZ

  • how is he ignorant for stating fact?

  • This teacher is total idiot.

  • Kara Walker is awesome! Her art is innovative and brutally honest. Most great art belies convention.

  • Dear god I wonder can you save me white people want my mind soul and my body

  • This is stupid. Bunch of guilty whites.

    WHITE PRIDE WORLD WIDE! 14/88

  • All races have been slaves at one point in time get over it.

  • Anyone who says that the piece is horrendous trash is saying the truth, but what is more important is the piece's idea. This piece obviously is trying to bring to attention the oppression that african american's have experienced, and by extension the oppression that african americans are still struggling with. After being brought out of slavery african americans were left in the dark and many still struggle with attitudes inherited from our grandparents grandparents.

  • People who do not consider this art ARE the audience that should be looking at this. They are the people who believe that because we were freed, and have an "equal opportunity" that we are free from where we come from. These are the people that only belive in the american culture, the white culture, and are in denial about race relationships and African American's in the United States Societies. Golly, you guys sound like idiots. Also, some of those students sound sort of...mentally impaired lol

  • Yeah the typical right wing belief that "ya'll ain't slaves no more ya'll ain't oppressed ya'll just lazy get off welfare." makes me sick to my stomach

  • Thank you! finally, someone who can think!

  • Your comment says so much about you. Please don't believe everything you read or see on the television rather think before you make such ignorant comments.

  • I don't i live in GEORGIA and witness it first hand. The people i live around are generally nice people but alot of them are ignorant to the bone

  • Well, like Ms. Walker, you got people to think. Kind of a shame we have to trick or shock people into considering deeper subjects. Maybe the human soul gets buried under the clutter of life until we forcibly dig it up?

  • Kara's work is shocking. It deals with the deep down ugly psychological truths of slavery in the south. Yeah, it's shocking and ugly. Slavery was shocking and ugly. Little black girls were forced by their masters to have sex at a very young age. This is a dirty truth. If you are shocked and appalled you should be. Good work, love this video.

  • P.S we still suffer with these issue today.

  • brilliant.

  • Why is it that blacks are allowed to put out such trash?? I think this shoudl be banned, truly it should. Absolutely perverted sickness...the artist is dangling over the pits of hell it seems. Get over it, you nor anyone you know were whipped and beaten or worked in the cotton fields by whites!! Listen at the silly way the kids in the video tries to explain it. Sickening!

  • your life dangles over the pits of hell the same through massive ecological destruction just to give you a computer to make these stupid comments and keep your fat gut full of food. fossil fuels allow you to be alive and overshoot carrying capacity. youre the joke.

  • To me it is some sort of slave art..notice the people are white...its not something i'd show to a class would you?I feel that its how blacks feel alot of the time...not that they should....it is ghastly and one of the most appauling offensive things i have ever seen on utube...and i do love art..i am an artist i do photagraphy....if i put up a photo like this id be arrested no kidding...dan... of cherry picss...ny

  • Wow, I'm done, my disturbance quota has been filled from now until the end of April. Ugh fuck the world. Will the trauma ever end. I think I have to give up You Tube :o(

  • Well, a lot of those kids are... kind of stupid. They don't seem to have an ability to look past what the drawing is and wonder what inspired it, what it was supposed to imply, what it means on an artistic level. (Not all of them--the black girl did, I suppose. But most of them.)

  • WTF is this shit!

  • It certainly is a bizarre picture.

  • THAT WAS DISTURBING!!!

I am in tears when I saw that! Kara Walker is maybe a realist of the past or sick as hell!!!

I am sorry if I said that, but I am upset by this!

I might take a day or week to calm myself down and try to look at this logically and with an open mind, but right now I can't!

  • i agree it is diturbing and i am an artist here in batavia ny..i do photagraphy..i may flag this even though it is allegedly art it is horrendous you are right lil coco77007

  • Massas doing nigga rape again? And toasting.

Amerikkkan saga cont. with a sellout black

    chick.

  • thats wrong , thats gross,, oh a black lady did it oh well i guess its ok ..? wtf is that

  • Context in art is everything. Belated contextualization can flip the interpretation of a piece and its conceptualization so radically it was indeed this science of white racist media manipulation that has proved so insidiously difficult to overturn today such is its subversive power.

Very thought provoking video... top marks.... this is what youtube should be about

  • Interesting commentary from the students.

  • doesn't this prove that college professors are INTENTIONALLY trying to fan the flames of racial hatred while fostering white guilt?

people like this moron should not only be fired, he should be thrown in jail.

  • Awesome.

    Keep it up miss Walker.

  • I consider this art peice racist against whites, regardless-

    This isn't art, its trash.

  • Kara Walker's work is the result of internalized racism. This is a type of existential self-mutilation. Would you help someone who is engaging in self-mutilation? If you are white you don't understand how whiteness works in the world. If you are educated, before conducting your experiment you should've read "Sight Unseen:Whiteness in American Visual Culture" By Santa Cruz Professor Maurice A. Berger. Did you notice that the student you asked about your racism didn't even give you eye contact?

  • if it was painted by an ignorant white person it would be racist. by being painted by a black person I'm sure it is all about struggle. thats the funny thing about art, which proves true art comes from and exposes ones soul. that very same picture could have been drawn by an ignorant racist, which would show their true soul as being ignorant.

  • The wikipedia page is now censoring any criticism of kara Walker's work. If you want to know more about the criticism of her work by African American artists, visit brandshire (dot) com

  • Note: the sex act isn't shocking for young women, only the "racism".

  • This is Utter liberal multicultural garbage.

  • the girl at 5:38.......listen........brave art teacher, brave, i admire your opening the discussion.

  • The negroids are quick to forgive the whites for their crimes. Only 60 years ago they were getting hung on trees and burned on railroad tracks by the whites. This image gives the negroids an uncomfortable realization that there still are skeletons in the closet. Hopefully this will give them a clue that the whites are friendly to blacks in a patronizing way, hence the neologism "latent racism."

  • negroids?

  • Sorry, he didn't mean "negroids." He meant "niggerthelopians."

  • painfully fitting that you are throwing these words around on a site about mrs. walker......she deserves better and so do we:(

  • FasterThanYou321,

Boy is that ever true. America would be a Utopia if Lincoln had lived to impliment his plan to repatriate the Blacks back to the Dark Continent at the conclusion of the Civil War.

    Damn that John Wilkes Boothe!

  • @dale1966gto You're a retard. 'Blacks' didn't orignally come from the dark continent. Melaninated ppl OWN this planet; they just fell from grace. The 'black race' created man: have you not read the Torah?

And Elohym said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:- Genesis 1:26

  • hey johnT...i also admire the work of Kara walker..you should definitely contact her.this is thought provoking stuff...really liked this and respect the guts it took to do it...love reading the comments.. i agree.. pretty funny when guy walks in the bathroom @ the beginning and your male student just shaking his head with a smirk...theyre seeing the john thorton we know and love in action!!! they may not realize how lucky they are...love these vids keep em comin...

  • This is a courageous and thought-provoking evaluation of a very difficult area. I applaud it because it does force us to examine very difficult issues, even though it uses a "shock value" to do it. The author of this video did it for the educational purposes, I truly believe this, and probably at some professional risk. Overall, the benefits of this type of review far, far outweigh the risks.

  • ...oh yeah lol @ the guy walking in the restroom

    great vids

  • Take a hard look at what you are saying. If you put black and white children together they both play with each other equally and get along fine. When you teach black children about how they were treated by whites in the past you teach them to hate whites. You in effect teach them racism.

Your not wanting to forget is really just an excuse to hate.

  • That's a one-sided view...

Life's experiences can also influence one's attitude toward life. Being obsessed with the past does not justify attitudes for every individual.

  • That is one of the most absolute absurd responses I have read on Youtube as of yet. Teaching Black children --our-- history does not encourage hate. Do you not realize how selfish it is to say such a thing? Without a formal education of history we are only bound to repeat the past. For Blacks not to know how their ancestors were treated would only leave room for non-Blacks to take advantage and continue their same behavior to an extreme level. Worst than what it is today.

    Grow up!

  • Also, how about instead of going down the road of White guilt. Why don't some of you for once forgive your own damn ancestors and move on with your lives.

    Thank you!

    Why?

Because in actuality the world does not revolve around your brain. You should get out more, interact with people...and I guarantee you will be a much more healthy and happy person.

  • Your guilt is your problem.

  • There is a way to teach a person their cultural history without arousing feelings of spite for other races. Teachers, and sometimes even parents, don't know how to teach a child to stand strong but not resent a person who in the past would have been considered their "superior". It is a delicate process to stop the hatred from passing down, and unfortunately not enough people put time into building bridges. They would rather be skeptical of any move someone of another skin tone makes.

  • @lacedout Yeah...it's kinda scary when you try to have a conversation on race with caucasians...and they tell you to forget the past. It may be meant innocently, but we ALL know what happens to those who forget the past, as you've said.

  • So your saying that it's not right to hate the devil. Malcolm X said that if a snake bites you once, your gonna be on your toes and alert to not let that snake bight you again. The devil is a tricky beast. So is the white man.

  • You are such a big pussy.

  • I'm beginning to think that black people are obsessed with what happened in the past. There is no one alive that had anything to do with the inhumanity that was of that time, and more importantly, no one alive that it was done to. But they still hold contempt for the white race for what other white people did.

  • Are you fucking serious man? Look at your race today. You gave Japanese americans reperations, 25000$ apiece. Not just the ones that were put into concentration camps, but their heirs. What about Blacks? Don't give us money, give us our own land. Build us better shcools. Whites are abominal, endorsing that homosexuality is o.k. Are you fuckig serious. Then commiting genocide against the earth. Whites are gonna be judged by the most high. Whites sins have reached the heavens!

  • There is nothing wrong with Homosexuals. They are humans with a different sexual preference, so what?

Take a look at Africa and it's history of killing it's won people. All humans are capable of atrocities, color is not the factor. If you want money then work for it don't expect others to always give you handouts.

  • John,

I think it's great that you are using the medium of YouTube to explore these kinds of "artistic" questions.

Regarding the work of Kara Walker, as someone whose been watching it for years, I'm beginning to think it's perhaps becoming formulistic. The taboos seem a little too pat. I'll be interested to see if she keeps pushing as hard as she did in the past thanks JK

  • I liked the artwork. I'm imagining myself being the man in the picture right now. I wonder did the woman have a strap on ?

  • I like this film because it puts me in the classroom, asking myself the questions the teacher is asking the students. The movie could be expanded to include interviews with students who had extreme reactions, (comments longer than two or three words)--students who might be able to expound on their outrage.

    Sunshine Glenstone

  • Reverse the races, put 2 big black men "sandwiching" a beautiful white woman.

Put one jamaican with braids porking the white woman in her butt, and a gorilla looking african gangster shooting a load into her mouth.

Then have them two black men calling each other niggers and pointing guns at each other while smoking marijuana, yet have them both gently caressing the white woman with affection.. modern day racial identity?

  • You should paint something like that!

  • I think it would be very interesting if the artist herself could see this video and respond to the response of you and your students. Is there any way to send the YouTube link to her web site alond with a letter of intro and a request for her response?

  • yeah, she's very accessible. Just e-mail her Columbia University address, she's a professor in the art department.

  • Thanks for your courage to broach this stuff.
