Good question! Because he's a cricket snob. heh. Really it's because he's proud to be part of a larger culture. A global culture. Thanks for visiting.
how can he know all of this? I'm guessing he is about 5 years old, I mean that's some intense studying you did with him for him to remember so much.. I'm quite impressed.
Thank you liskism. Believe it or not all I did was to provide him with materials - maps, books, etc. He studied on his own. It was his passion. Now he's passionate about companion planting for organic vegetable gardening and has studied it with the same intensity that he did geography.
@sosylvie why haven't you posted any more videos if you don't mind me asking? I mean, this boy is unbelievably talented. I'm so impressed that he had the curiosity of learning this all by himself (of course you contributed to it). I mean when I was his age, I had no desire to read or do any of that. Well, I'm very glad you posted this because when I have children (eventually...) I'll be sure to expose them to all sorts of material, including countries and capitals. :)
@liskism Thanks for your enthusiasm. I'm not a full-on subscriber to YouTube so I have a limit of how many minutes I can post. Simple as that. Regarding when you were Marcel's age -- We all have our way of being in the world. I'm sure you have strengths in other areas. Other passions. When you do have children, consider styling a life that allows for Home Schooling. Then just let them bloom. Cheers!
i often wonder what blacks think of frequent encounters with brilliant white children when smart black children are so few and far between. make the difference between talented and smart. a kid may be able to play athletics or dance but not do well in an academic or ''mental'' sense.
Hi mavis996. Marcel began showing interest in geography at about 2 1/2 years of age. His interest went well beyond knowing the capitals, to learning about products and industry, wars, regional music, etc. He would even study the topography of the places.
The kid is amazing. I'm very curious and I love to know all the countries, capitals and flags but it's really hard to learn everything...I'm amazed with this kid. But they almost only asked questions about Afrika. I would like more about Asia and Europe too but Afrika is definitly the heardest continent for you to know everything...
Thank you kindly for your comment Sonjayu. Unfortunately I don't have a paid subscription to YouTube and so I posted a short version of the video, which excludes talk on many more countries.
That's a good idea. I'll have to check with Marcel though. He's moved on to other interests. For instance, we spent some time today at the Santa Clara train station so he could make his own videos of the trains.
Hi Amy, He was six years-old when this video was made. After his run with geography he got into studying dogs and trains. Now he's interested in cars and gardening. His name is Marcel.
one of a kind. few people (including me since i watch the history channel 24/7 and play HoI) know shit about geography. see "stupid americans australia" and find the 1 about "australian" landmarks. :D
What a wonderful kid! How about if every people after seeing this video send a postcard to Marcel? This way he could get a souvenir and learn more about every place. Let's see if Marcel's mom can agree on this idea.
Bonjour,Ciao, thanks for commenting! Marcel is studying language through song.He has dozens of Putumayo CDs.Right now he's enjoying the Italian & French ones, but also Mali,Turkey, Greece... You're right,it's a fun way to learn.
I learned all the capitals when i was like ten or eleven and i thought that was amazing, but this is awesome! He knew about Cabinda, i can't believe it!
Are you teaching him other subjects? (math, physics, chemistry or history) Also... what is your method of teaching, does he read them out of an atlas, or do you have somekind of program... unless its secret :) I'm really interested in geography, can draw a world map if you give me a paper and pen, but knowing all the capitals and flags is amazing... Seeing the benefits, I would probably personally want to homeschool my future children (im in gr12, and dont have any though).
Hello theway1990.For some reason my original reply didn't get published.I will reply in segments because of the space limit. He does not have a formal program for studies. He is allowed to explore his universe (as in University)organically. We seize the moment when he is naturally drawn to something. For example,if it's cooking we use that interest as away to study reading and fractions while he follows a recipe.Did you know that you have to adjust the cooking temperature according to your altitude?
Cooking can be a creative process. We have a high regard for creativity and allowing for experimentation within(or should I say without)a given "recipe".The main thing for Marcel is books. He loves to read and usually has a book in his hands.I have taught myself sewing, cooking, basketball skills, auto mechanics, and so much more, all by reading on these subjects. And then of course hands-on experience.Marcel is doing the same.We all have special abilities and talents waiting to be discovered.Good luck!
OMG that's where all of America's knowledge went. The little kid stole it. This explains why Americans (in general) are so stupid :O Clever little bastard .........
Ok, i knew a shit load of stuff about foriegn countries that i was never expected to see during the 70s.. We had quizzes with my friends. And we lived in the city!
But to find that this young lad should know all this today.. At his age.... And be American!!.. Well then, yes, i would say he deserves an honorary position in a university.. Better yet. A presidency!
That's wonderful. I am passionate about geography as well. However, don't let him become a socially retarded young man. Many homeschooled children lack the normal social skills needed to function in a rapid paced society.
Ha! I appreciate your concern, but I have to disagree, of course :) I think it can be the over-stimulated, over-socialized, over-publicized (as in PUBLIC school) that don't know how to be quiet and alone; to be in solitude, happily. We all need so much entertainment and stimulation that when we do find ourselves alone we feel blue and lost. We have to belong to a group or mate in order to feel comfortable in our skins. F*#! "rapid paced society". There are other ways to live.
Right, but you can't argue the fact that society as a whole is rapidly moving forward. The social stigmas attached to homeschooled children are already hard to overcome in the teenage years. Also, I don't know what schools are like where you live, but in Oklahoma and Texas, there are hundreds of wonderful schools that teach respect and how to adapt to a modern world. NOT ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE BAD.
I will have to publish my reply in segments due to the 500 word limit.
I would never say that ALL public schools are bad, anymore than I would say that all Homeschoolers have stigmas. I can't imagine any teenager in the 21st Century who is without social stigmas of some kind.
Rather I would say that teenagers in the public school system have different stigmas from teenagers in Homeschool. I have a 23 year-old son who went to public school, as well as Marcel who Homeschools. I speak from personal experience. By the way my husband is a college professor (30+ years). We are not unfamiliar with the educational system.
I'm glad that you admitted that you don't know what schools are like where I live. This makes a difference in your perspective on things.
It's not my way to degrade a whole segment of the population because it's not familiar to me or I don't happen to believe in it. Congratulations to the schools and students in Oklahoma and Texas that are thriving.
That's a pretty large region to be able to claim such successful numbers; by your account "hundreds of schools". How do you happen to know this by the way. I think it would be helpful to understand your authority on the subject.
References, my dear. Obviously I haven't attended hundreds of high schools in OK and TX, however I do know hundreds of people from hundreds of schools. The degree I'm pursuing is Secondary Education, and I've talked to hundreds of people of various ages regarding their time in high school. The large majority of people are well rounded, successful people.
I speak from an objective point of view, and the many people I know who were homeschooled have a tougher time adapting to situations outside the home. I'm certainly not saying it is impossible to develop normally in terms of a social aptmosphere, I'm just saying public schools (and private schools as well) give people a certain advantage. Social interaction is an essential part of human development.
He`s a special one! You should go to the media, or something.
I am from Norway. Bet he knows the name of the capital here. I live in Stavanger, the fourth biggest city in Norway.
In a few years, he may have learned details like theese as well.
He remines me of the Norwegian soccerteam`s former coach. His name is Egil "Drillo" Olsen. You can mention whatever country you wish, and he will say everything there is to know about the country, geographicly.
Thank you kindly Haljup. I'll share your comment with Marcel. He was invited to be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last year but he turned them down (!). We'll have to read about Egil. Thanks again!
This is fantastic. The power of memorization is very strong but unfortunately most of us do not use it. When I was in first grade I memorized all 50 United States and their capitals. It's a great exercise for a mind of any age. Now you ought to make a video asking him some questions about the Middle East, Asia and the Island nations of the Pacific.
Hi sibasimon. Thanks for your kind comment. The original version of the video was much better, and covered more territories. I'm not a subscriber, so I was only able to put a trucated version online.
