I saw him way back in 1977 at the Roxy Theater in LA early December with Brand X. he ripped that night, both shows were amazing. since then i have been trading/collecting Brand X bootlegs
We call him woody he is out of manna house 106th street bet 1st and 2nd ave in harlem this boy is bad !!!!!!! I studied with him also at manna house..
I studied with this cat for a year and he is the real deal. Never be blinded by what you think you know or what you see ,there is much more that meets the eye here.
This is roots, rap, reggae...Sugar Hill Gang style.
This was obviously a few years prior to, and the precursor to Crack Cocaine. However, it did pave the way for Gangsta Rap & whatnot.
This man was cutting edge, even if the first cuts were from a knife made of Cheese Wiz.
Oh, the schmaltz of this. And Weckl went on to bigger and better things, while this man labored in obscurity until the advent of You Tube some 20 years later!
Other drummers went on to do better things maybe, but woody has actually taught many of these drummers. The guy is a legend and is a percussion professor at Berklee College. His influence is huge, hope theres' some more clips out there...
Second that! One of the best records - ever. This guy is frickin' amazing. I had only read about his "World Music" in the '80's, but actually seeing it is great. Thanks for posting this!
Roland makes this type of thing a little easier to do nowadays, but you still need talent. This man is creator to guys like, Tony Venderosa, A. Jimbo, Thomas Lang, and a shit load more. Praise Woody!
I became friendly with Woody several years ago. I emailed him. He responded. THen we talked on the phone. THen met. He is a helluva nice guy besides an incredible drummer
I saw him live in a church in Boston-I was playing piano with another band- at one pioint he started playing a very fast swing with the drums with right hand on cymbal keeping the bass drum and hi-hat while playing Donna Lee Charlie Parker be-bop fast tune) with his left hand on a keyboard , live , not even one glitch on the head of the tune , perfect timing .
Heh, when someone only listens to this, the person will think that it's just a group band. But, when they actually see who's playing, they be like "dude, there is no way that it was just one person, singing, playing the keyboards and the drums at the same time..." well, here is one of those impossibles proving to be possible. Amazing drum solos too by the way...
Those are some serious bad ass singles from about 3:40 to 4:50. A nice impression of Buddy Rich's style. Fine technique, I wish I had that in my bag of tricks.
I love this guy, he has more to teach than the drum's. He reminds me of bobby mcferrin.. just having fun.. of course after having earned the chops, check out his video on the red 3 piece, its amazing, u really gotta listen though. KENWOOD!
Right.. This guy's just having a good time. Clearly he has groove and innovation in his playing (His singing might not exactly be amazing). Not to mention all the licks he's busting out..
Point being the more you close your mind the less you're going to learn.. This is especially important with drums ;)
not one person is better than him....unless he was ganged up on by a whole percussion and rhythm section and and oldies r&b rapper/singer, but thats almost impossible....so....altogether, he's da ShIT
I totally agree with that guy below. If Pat Martino's "Joyous Lake" was the only thing Kenwood ever did, he would still deserve to be a living legend.
