Hi Pamela, i just wanted to thank you for this video. I have started using this method with the sound of dogs barking as it's a real trigger for my dog and i think it is having an affect, I have been able to turn it up a little louder each time and now if he hears a dog bark quietly or far away he doesn't react. Still got a way to go though!
Great video! Sounds so easy, will give it a try and will let you know if it works. My "vicious" :) Dobermann is afraid of our vacuum cleaner since it was a puppy. Hopefully this will help.
It will work! You might have to start with the sound on the CD really really low almost so faint that your dog does not realize it is the vacuum sound. Also, if he gets afraid and tries to hide or whatever he does when the actual vacuum is out, lower the sound more. You do not want a reaction. You are looking for a calm relaxed dog. If he does well with the sound at a low level increase it a little more and then quit for the day and repeat again the next day where you left off. Good luck.
My dog was also scared about the vacuum cleaner. It changed, when we used it as a training object (target) for touches with his paws. First the vacuum cleaner was turned off, later on turned on with low noise, at the end with full noise. I tried to post the video but it seemed not to be successful.
As long as it worked and your dog is no longer scared. I like to have them calm around the object or noise to start and not feel like they have to work. I also like them to feel like they do not have to interact with the scary thing, but just look at it. Some dogs do better if they are given a job and work with the object. Especially clicker savvy dogs like yours! Nice work! Looks like your dog is doing well around the vacuum. Awesome!
You are right. For Spike it is good to habe a job to do. That helps. We solved another problem the same way. After new years eve he was very afraid of the PLOP a bottle of wine or champagne makes when opened, because the fireworks started after that. His fear changed to interest in the PLOP when he repeatedly could view the whole process of opening the bottle and touch the bottle himself. Nowadays he comes to me when I open a bottle or get the vacuum cleaner in hope of a clicker session.
Great vid, can't wait for the vaccum cleaner next week - my dog Sammi (mini schnauzer) goes crazy when I pull out the vac, she attacks it. It will be nice to see how to help her with that.
Also, could you do a vid on how to stop her from barking at nothing when she's looking out the window...it's ok to bark a little but she just doesn't stop until I pull her away and take her to another room. Help :-)
I remember our first dog that was scared to death of the vacuum cleaner. As soon as you took out the vacuum cleaner, she would dash to the door and want to go out in safety.
All my dogs have been scared of the vacuum cleaner, and this training has helped them to overwin their fears.
Awesome video! Had to favorite this one! So many dog owners need this advice. I love how you made it so clear that you could use it for any noises. :) Great!

I never thought of recording the sound and playing it back so you can adjust the volume...That's a great idea!

That is a great suggestion. Having a video like that would be even better. My Dobie is barking at people/dogs passing by our house.
