OMG, the poster in the background!! that's a poster of one of my other favourite bands, Racoon... it's a Dutch band, I didn't expect a poster of THEM in a video of Steven Wilson.
hey man. im in atlanta, too. im trying to find people that play music like porcupine tree. im a bassist and a guitarist. by chance, you a drummer or anything?
Ok I fucking love Steven Wilson... he's a fucking musical GENIUS... I'm surprised Porcupine Tree isn't one of the biggest bands of all time, they sure deserve to be, same with Blackfield or any of Steven Wilson's side projects. Oh and all of the band members he works with are sheer genius as well.
Porcupine Tree and Tool are both equally amazing in their own unique ways. Both these bands are distinguished by their originality and willingness to push the boundaries of musical expression, so why question which of them is better? Just appreciate them both as equally awesome!
steven willson's touch and attitude towards melancholic music is outstanding in our glamour dominated music industry. I wish him all the best for the future. May the success with PT and Blackfield last forever. I adore his music - it's priceless
i have a 10 milimetre plug, a 5 milimetre claw and an helix piercing and i'm a dude. I just didnt know that he has one... so chill ^^ - it isnt a rarity at all.
hahaha sorry bro... I've got earrings and some people keep making unnecessary comments about them that same day I read your comment, so I just kind of unleashed hahaha. My apology.
Hey, i have listened to tool, a perfect circle, porcupine tree, no-man ( a spinof version of porcupine tree...kinda lol) and loads of othere greats like pink flyd and lez zepplin and the chili peppers and u can never truly compare any of them, there music is individual and so should be ur opinions!
i could not of said it better u cannot compare bands of 2 different levels especially bands with so much emotion such as Tool or PT they both have great qualities that cannot b measured
Hey man I saw em too on the 23rd. Better than Tool now IMHO. Tool always sounds very much the same to me. This band morphs and I never thought I would say this being a drummer but Gavin really just blows my mind far more than Danny Carey and Danny was my fav...
Im sorry man, but Danny is still the best. Gavin can play some complex stuff but he cannot touch Danny. PLus Im sure we can all agree that Danny's style has something about it that NO other drummer has. I guess you could say the same thing about Gavin...
scrubbycritter, sorry to say but Gavin is a much better drummer than Danny. i play drums and most of danny's stuff is actually easier to play than gavin's.
I was just debating this im my head yesterday. Mike Portnoy vs Gavin Harrison vs Danny Carrey. Who you think would win a drum off? I love them all, in my opinion the best drummers alive.
@scrubbycritter they are my favourite drummers of all time. I think all of them have very different inner creativities. i always thought that mike portnoys OCD effected his style of drumming, making it more progressive. i think gavin has alot of natural creativity, and danny carrey has a good feel for the groove of the music.
@scrubbycritter Have to go with Gavin. They are all good but Gavin has a way of making all 4 limbs work as a team. Awsome footwork when needed. It seems to be more in the line of filler for the other guys.
"What's in a name? A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet." -Romeo & Juliet
In addition, a porcupine by any other tree would still kick the same amount of ass. I have no problem telling people that one of my favorite bands is called Porcupine Tree.
Steven Wilson is one of the best musicians ever. This is not to be disputed; it's fact. xD Porcupine Tree easily has at least one up on all of my favourite bands, including King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Phish, Pink Floyd... To those who say that PT sounds heavily influenced by Pink Floyd, I say, "Maybe so, but they also sound much better." I could write a book about how much I love PT... but I will have some restraint and end my post here.
the blackfield album was brilliant, so was fear of a blank planet. I like Aviv Geffens albums and listening to songs like "it's clowdy now" and others in hebrew is really sweet. I also am wondering about the new medley on PT's myspace that is a sampler of new stuff. What's that all about?
He reminds me a lot of John Lennon somehow. Completely fucking brilliant man as well as an eclectic musician. Ridiculously talented guy. They should tour Australia.
i just love this guy! he sometimes has this air of arrogance, tho.
well blackfield II is an album of its own. no need to compare it with the first. if people are expecting to hear the same type of music with every album from a certain band then there'd be no point in making new albums, right?
I just love the fact he's english. I'm proud to be of the same nationality as such an amzing musician. Any album hes worked on ive liked lol, porcupine tree, blackfield, or anything else ive heard that doesnt spring to mind right now.
just to allay any 'worries' or questions as to steven wilson's sexual orientation, he is NOT gay. as a matter of fact he has a girlfriend... i know that isn't solid evidence, but as others have said, it really doesn't matter if he's gay, straight, bi or a castrati he's still a great, BRILLIANT musician, and a genuinely nice and very humble person.
Fabulous interview. It's great to see an artist who hasn't got an inflated ego (e.g. like the Gallaghers in "Oasis") Wilson comes across as an everyday type of Londoner. You can tell he has sincere talent of a high standard.
When he says that songwriting exorcises his "inner demons" infact it usually has the opposite effect. It sometimes opens up "Pandoras Box" whirlwind of uncontrollable emotions and it's the main reason why so many superb artists become substance abusers.
What does it matter if he's gay? Every great songwriter from Gershwin to Porter to Nick Drake has been gay. You'd have to overlook/dismiss most of the classic actors too.
well he's only wearing one earring and its in his right ear. I heard if you wore an earring in your right ear only that you are gay but that might just be in America or somthing. Weather he's gay or not, i dont give because he makes dank music
Well I'm female and not gay and god forbid Steven is gay and I'd let him pummel me anywhere he wants to ;) (I just hope my husband doesn't read this--sorry honey bunny!).
"If I settled down, got married, had kids and stayed in London for the rest of my life and stopped listening to music and stopped going to the movies, I think inevitably my creative output would start to stagnate and... Although part of me hopes that will happen one day - cause I would love to have, you know, a stable family life and all that stuff..."
Great interview with Steven. However, I must dispute his figure of "2% of new listeners" at festivals becoming new PT fans--I'm absolutely sure the number is much higher (50%?). Anyone who can see Porcupine Tree live in any venue and not come away a fan is unable to discern brilliant music when they hear it.
he is an emo .... cional people in the rigth way
