Whats the thing he attached to his flash with a rubber band? around 1.48. Is it some kind of homemade gridspot? I really like the results he got with it whatever it was.Thanks for sharing.

It is a gridspot made from corrugated cardboard. Just take the cardboard, cut it in thick strips, glue the layers together, and that's it. No tedious messing around with black straws.

The guy with the sony dslr and long lens... he was using the on camera flash at one point, won't he get a large dark area on the pic from the lens getting in the way of the flash?

I think he was using an optical strobe set outside the frame. I've looked at this shot on his flickr page and there's no evidence of the on-camera flash.
