It is kinda common for tube amps to get interference. It could very well be the wall socket you have it plugged to, or even your pickups, "picking up" interference for lights, monitors, t.v., or even a power supply from a pedal you might be running... or if your guitar has single-coil pickups...you'll always have a 60-cycle hum if you run them one at a time. Could be a lot of things, but I hate to say you have to tough it out.
@OPOCHKA check your guitar wiring to see if the ground is wired properly. On my guitar it wasn;t and it could pick up all kinds of stuff like my neighbour's drill
I wonder how nice it would sound to combine one of these small tube amps with a bass amp run in stereo (my main amp is a Fender Rumble Bass amp. I like the sound of a bass amp, but tubes are cool).
hi simon i used to take lessons there with robby but i heared hes not there anymore but my parents are sighning me back up in a few days and my favorite band is guns n roses rock on and god bless :)
The JSX Mini Colossal can't even get close to this amp if you want a good twangy clean sound though. With a new speaker I think it's even more versatile than the Colossal as far as a wider range of sounds go.The Colossal is for people who play Metal. You could easily Mod this amp and also run it to cabs.I just don't think you can get very good clean tones from the Colosal. If you like Delta Blues and Classic Peavey's this is the one to get for the price of a very good bottle Scotch.
I have one of these too, got a JSX Mini Collosal and there's no comparing them. The royal 8 was great imo, but the JSX just blows it away. The royal 8 completely lacks bass response, which is probably because of the small shitty speaker, replacing it would probably makes this amp 100x better.
I agree. The mini is a monster!. The ohms switch is awesome and also running it through a 412 is a beast! But yeah, Pop a weber speaker in the Royal and you're ready to go.
I can't actually say for myself. The amp tech at the store I work at does that stuff for me...it's kinda over my head:) I have read about people doing that mod though.
You know honestly I can't say...Haven't tried those to compare it with. I've played older champions that I were very pleased with, but they were solid-state. Thanks again.
Great playing! :-O :)

the riff you start playing around 1:00, can you give a tab or something for it. It sounds really groovy... :)
flakez0r 3 years ago
I'll try. Never tried to tab that out, just always kinda played it. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for asking:)

Any idea how this would take a multi-effects processor like a Zoom G2?
AllanMacIn 3 years ago
It may do well at low volume but it would lack in bass response. Maybe upgrading to a Weber speaker would increase the tightness.

becuase it is 5 watta by itself does it not go very loud

Yeah, but the JSX is over double the price so the Royal 8 is still a great choice for many.

Anyone knows how it sounds with distortion pedals like boss mt-2?
schimer93 3 years ago
And it doesn't have an output jack for another external, but I added that to mine.
It sounds really nice through a 4x12.
I'm telling you, these el84 5 watt amps have got some tone if you mod them a little bit.
Turtlehands 3 years ago
Could you tell me what was involved in adding the external output jack? Thanks.

Replace the speaker, and the tubes.
It sounds 10 times better after you do that.
And then you've got as good an amp as the epi valve. If you don't want to do that, I'd stay away from it.
The royal 8 has the gain and volume switch stock which beats the epiphone, for volume/gain control.
(I own both.)

Crate Palomino 8 waaaaaaayy better than the Royal 8 in my opinion !
dimarzioooo 3 years ago
to me it sounds like one of those pocket solid state amps, could be the speaker tho. its got nothin on the blackheart or epi jr

it sounds kinda boxy to me.... i prefer the fender champ 600 :\
