Yes! You brought to light the association of the black male vote and the later vote for women. Seriously, not a lot of people connect those and the emphasis to , "...get Sambo to vote." That's where Sojourner Truth was particularly effective in rallying support for citizenship and suffrage for black men.
I'm particularly glad to see that you had taken the time to research the quote with which you were shocked, rather than simply form an instant reaction.
Years ago there used to be a restaurant called Sambo's in our town. I felt that it was an odd and racist name.
There have been times in my life that I could not sit still and watch tv. It was when I was going through a particularly stressful time.I would ride my motorcycle like a maniac. I hope that I never feel that way again.
Mel, I've been watching you for years now. I've seen nearly every one of your videos as they've been uploaded.
I just wanted to say thanks for making these videos. I feel like I owe you something in return since you've provided me with content I enjoy. Soo.... arigato gozaimasu. I'm not Japanese, but whatever.
I'm also planning to send something to your PO Box whenever I can get around to it one of these days!
The filmmaker's name is Ken Burns. I didn't know that Douglass married a white woman, or that Stanton wrote a letter of congratulations to him.. I have no problem with Stanton's realpolitik, or the concerns about ignorant voters she ultilized to that end, only the language she used. Consider the blacks and hispanics, votng for the first time, because of Obama, and effectively passed ant-gay marriage acts in Cal and Fla.
@MainStreetMonochrome I suppose it's safe to assume you're in favor of the literacy test Tancredo proposed? You really could have saved yourself a few keystrokes by simply typing: I support inequality, preferably subtle, systematic discrimination in the form of voter disenfranchisement. I'm sure you consider yourself a patriot.
Realpolitik? The way people your ilk rationalize things is amusing if not anything else.
@MainStreetMonochrome Her "concern" was rooted in racism. You are aware of the predominate view of Black people at that time, yes? You should be considering you seem to subscribe to it.
As for "ignorant" voters, since this country's inception, millions upon millions of White people have elected ineffectual White, mostly male, politicians merely because they are White. You are either ignorant or wildly delusional if you think otherwise. Smell that? Your comment reeks of White Privilege.
What you need to work out that restlessness when watching long shows in front of the TV is an AFGHAN on your lap, still under construction as you crochet it together. That will keep you active and multi-tasking just like if you were at the computer. It'll even weigh you down and make you too lazy to want to get up. And it's conveniently waiting for you in the Piggly Wiggly bag in front of the TV!
dude, can you make some crochet tutorials on your youtube? :P Me and my friend here want to learn so badly, and everytime I think of crochet - I think of you!! Help us out please! :)
I'm glad that my branding as a crochet expert has been effective, but there are already other crochet tutorials on youtube. Somebody must have made some good ones. I'm not sure I'd be good at it. The one person I tried to show in real life was having a hard time with it, until Melinda came along and did a better job of teaching it. It would be even harder to teach on camera. But search for some tutorial videos and give it a try. It's cheap and fun!
zomg, you remember Elizabeth Cady Stanton but not Susan B. Anthony?
I'm surprised that after years arguing for abolition and women's rights, "universal suffrage", she would argue for which needed to come first. Way to divide and conquer your own movement.
Randy, good point. Not only that, but when you listen to people who oppose gay marriage or gay rights, you can hear some of the same (weak) arguments used in the past to oppose other civil rights.

In another generation, the current rhetoric against gay marriage is going to sound as rediculous as Stanton's. Actually, it already does....
