  • It would be kewl if Kirk was flogged as a punishment for cheating kobayashimaru test xD

  • Comment removed

  • You're looking too far into this. :/

  • This is Hollywood They ran out of ideas DECADES ago

I also like the video with the side by side comparison to Star Wars

  • so, let me get this straight, because both movies include: teenage rebellion, heated brawls, illicit love, military service in a time of battle, testing, failure, penance, followed by success, then promotion, and some yokels shouting "weeeee hoooooo!", then one movie is ripping off the other? I'd say both movies ripped off ...every other movie that's not a romantic comedy then. Also, I submit that perhaps we can no longer use the term "Art Imitating Life" but instead "Art Ripped-Off Life"

  • @JagThegemini: actually.. Starship Troopers the Book was written in 1959.. and it did have the Federation as the government in the book.. nothing about warp speed however.. but they did use a propulsion similar to that of Star Trek, and since Gene Roddenberry was a Sci Fi fan, he would have read the book and known about it.. so in fact.. Star Trek ripped off things from Starship Troopers, as well as other books.. sorry to dissapoint your fan boy ness.

  • I can see what you mean but I still didn't think it was much of a rip-off.

  • this is a dramatic show of how bad are the new sci-fi movies

  • Only difference is, Starship Troopers was a fun, great film with a director-writing team who weren't morons.

  • this is sad. Especially the ship-scraping scenes starting around 3:15

I honestly hope JJ Abrams didn't film the Star Trek movie like this on purpose. Then again, Orci and Kurtzman proved their poor screenplay writing abilities with their previous films. Perhaps they thought nobody would pick up on these similarities. I sure as hell didn't, until I saw this video. =/

  • Most of these are pretty weak 'similarities' - the kind of stuff you might see in any movie about guys preparing to join the military and go to war.

  • @koinshaku: You're telling me! General Grin is just reaching here....a lot.

  • Lol wow they same pilot develolment. Only diffences 1 a socilist nazi gove the other a RBE lol.

  • Starship troopers was just a excuse to blow shit up and make money nough said

  • Sex, bar fights, deliquent but headstrong young man, space aye candies...you are fucking idiot to subscribe those to one movie, thats standard hollywood bullshit lol

  • @DKzgd Indeed!

  • ...and both movies sucked

  • This is a very poor comparison. Alike moments were compared, but within the context of each story they were taken out of place. Not to mention the fact that more than half of the crap that Starship Troopers contains is general copies of things that the Star Trek Franchise has done MUCH BEFORE Starship troopers was ever even "imagined."

  • @Pressy: You mean to say, 'MUCH BETTER', but you're right.

  • so not the case

  • I'd like to add that there's tons of things that REALLY rip off Star Ship Troopers, namely, Starcraft, Warhammer 40,000, and to a degree Halo. Basically anything that features power suit infantry under the command of an oppressive military government fighting against a genocidal alien race bent on annihilating humanity is a good bet for a Star Ship Troopers ripoff. Hell War hammer doesn't even change the enemy, the Space Marines really do fight giant bugs all the time.

  • No, you assembled generic scenes out of order and implying different context in order to make it seem like one is a copy of the other. You can't claim either movie owns brawls, sex scenes, or the hiding a sex partner conundrum. There's a couple actual similarities but other then that you're really reaching.

  • GET DOWN!

  • thank you whoever posted this i got to watch two films at the same time in 5minutes i never did that before

  • This is more of a general thing that happens in a lot of movies and in life its a kind of architype therefore you cant claim ownership of an architype so ur videos are flawed and u r waisting ur life

  • For some reason, I'm sensing some bias in you movies...

  • Now i know why I loved the new trek movie, its because I loved Starship Troopers

  • starship troopers copied trek with terms like warp speed and the federation. the test comes from the wrath of khan. staring at the ship in space come from star trek 1.

  • actually starship troopers was based on a book written years before star trek was invented

  • Loosely based, General. If the book had been that much like the movie, then I doubt it would have even been printed, let alone adapted into a movie decades later.

  • @GeneralGrin never did read the book myself but based on its age I'll wager the book didn't worry about things like the light barrier.

His claim that Star Trek invented the word "Federation" is asinine however. Its sad when geekdom of a fictional series blocks out the real world. Its a real waste of otherwise intelligent people.

  • @WhenYouveGoneGuru: Actually, the book does mention FTL, but I forget what it's called. It's the only way the characters could fight the war against the bugs. And yes, I agree, Generla Grin is reaching somewhat.

  • @GeneralGrin Starship Troopers 1959 by Robert A. Heinlein. There were other great Scifi Genre novels written around this time way before ST or SW.

  • @GeneralGrin

Source? Star Trek is from the 60´s, so it´s really unlikely that something that Starship troopers is based on was invented earlier.

And even if, i am sure in that book(if your story is true) you wouldn´t find words like warpspeed or Federation.

  • @GeneralGrin just let it go

star trek XIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII wasn't a bad film.

  • nah. yeah, kinda similar in some ways, but Trk is totally different from troopers. don't get me wrong, i like troopers too, but i love Star Trek a lot more. :D

  • THANK YOU for this! Christ, I cannot understand how so many people LOV-V-V-ED the new Trek movie. It was idiotic.

  • Apparently Virgin Galactic offered Shatner a seat on VSS Enterprise. He turned it down, saying that he would reconsider when the ship had transporters fitted!

  • Well spotted !!!

  • Excellent comparison, I did not think that with these two, but I like them both anyhow.

  • lol, I thought of that as I was watching the movie in the theater.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the new Trek, but it's funny how nobody I've talked to who liked the new Trek will admit the similarities (they do admit the similarities to Star Wars though, probably because A New Hope is a much more highly regarded movie than Starship Troopers...)

  • what do you have against star wars

  • So, the Star Trek movie is a mix of Star Wars Episode IV and Starship Troopers? No wonder it's so good, those are two of my favorite movies.

  • The similarities are just coincidence.

Johnny Rico in both the book & movie version of ST is always like Kirk: Adventurous, brave, a natural-born fighter & a lady's man.

But it's by no means a scene-by-scene rehash. However, the Federation in Starship Troopers is similar to Trek but it has more of the action of Star Wars

  • The 'Federation' in Starship Troopers is utterly fascist-the Federation in Star Trek isn't. The Federation in Troopers is trying to wipe out alien races, the Federation in Star Trek tries to COMMUNICATE with alien races and be at peace with them.

  • Yes, the Federation in both universes are different but when I compared them in that sentence, I meant that they were similar in style (huge navy/ fleet, the head of the fleet is incompetent, they have powerful guns, space stations).

No, they're completely different when it comes to their goals. STrooper's Federation dresses like Nazis & are just as incompetent as the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq (listen to the DVD commentary) while Starfleet is all for peace & exploration

  • not in STXI they aren't

  • The similarities are uncanny

  • I didn't even realize it myself until now. Spooky, isn't it?

  • It is indeed

  • "Talent copies. Genius steals."

    --Oscar Wilde

  • OMG. Thanks for the thesis! I have not watched SS in like 10 years. I had forgotten all of this. It really shows just how uncreative and hacky Orci and Kurtman are. 5 stars...

  • Fun. But there are a million stories in the galaxy. It's bound to happen that two of them parallel. Still, nice vid.

  • Yeah, why not base the revitalization of a beloved series on a universally panned, cult, camp film? :/

  • Yeah fuck the system and what your stupid step dad says!! TWICE!!!

  • Dang General Grin, you sure do seem to have a problem with the new Star Trek movie. I thought it was good, but I guess every one is entitled to a opinion.

  • actually I don't have a problem with it.

I just love to nitpick things.

same with my "star trek mistakes" videos. I didn't do it because I hate star trek. I just do it for fun.

  • All right, that's cool. I just assumed that you didn't like the new movie because it has been a theme of quite a few of your videos but I guess I assumed wrong.

  • Thanks for the confirmation.

  • I've still never watched Starship Troopers. Is it worth the time?

  • Yes!

  • This video actually makes them seem less alike then I remember them being somehow.

  • Awesome! Can't believe I didn't notice all these.

  • emergency evasion...emergency evasion!

  • Well I guess that just proves they have no creativity whatsoever. And hearing that the sequel may be a Khan rehash is hardly inspiring. Didn't we already have that with Nemesis?

  • The Khan thing is just a rumor. The writers already said they didn't want to take the chance of reusing Khan.

  • How did you get such a high quality bootleg of Star Trek?

  • torrents duh!

  • This reminds me of the video "Family Guy Steals From Simpson", which used to be on YouTube until it was taken off (it's still on MetaCafe though).

Hey GeneralGrin, maybe instead of ending this video with "GET DOWN!", you could end it with a few lines from Barenaked Ladies' song "It's All Been Done". :-D

  • You know how they have "directors cuts" why don't they "fan cuts"?

I'd delete the joy riding scene, Re-shoot the Kobayashi Maru scene, Remove all sex scenes, Re-shoot the ending were Jimmy Kirk is promoted to "ensign" and is assigned to a garbage scow .

  • unbelievable.

    J.

    J.

    Abrams.

    shall harakiri himself.

  • I though the same thing... but it's even worse than I thought

  • Well, they are both shitty, unoriginal, uninspired, completely generic science fiction movies with no intellectual content whatsoever.

  • Who would look for intellect in science fiction?

  • Star Trek fans.

  • Star Trek fans must be mentally challenged then.

  • I'm just glad Starship Troopers didn't have 2 or 3 people standing off camera shining flashlights into the camera's lens to create obnoxious, seizure-inducing lens flares.

  • Ha, makes me glad I didn't see Starship Troopers first.

  • Starship Troopers is actually a better film.

it has giant monster bugs as the villains, and not a bunch of crazy brainless romulans

  • it had Neil Patrick Harris

  • Holy shit thats some good stuff right there.

  • ZOMG!!! LOL

  • Ripping off Starship Troopers? That's a new low for Star Trek. =p

  • starship troopers is a sci fi classic

the new star trek movie is a bag of wank

  • Maybe there are too many similarities to list.....but Star Ship Troopers is still superior to the new shitty trek film.

  • This is hilarious :-p

  • While I don't disagree, I think some of the ripping off could go both ways. The story of the Kobayashi Maru had been in Star Trek lore long before Starship Troopers was released.

  • Frankly I think the new movie is just ripping off many things from old trek and calling it "homage".

  • Starship Troopers is based on a book that was published in the 50's. so it predates Star Trek

  • Did the book (or was it a short story? - can't recall) also have a version of the Kobayashi Maru test?

  • no it wasn't the same. Rico accidenly caused the death of another trainee during an exercise (because of his ambition to win at all cost) and was almost kicked out because of it.

but just in the nick of time the War started and thus Rico stayed in the army.

the events in Trek XI are very similar.

Rico also rapidly rose in ranks over a short period of time

  • I Take It You Dont Like The New Star Trek

  • love it!!

  • : )

  • wow. i ... speachless

  • actually star trek XI and a new hope have A LOT in common too. lol

  • It's like Kill Bill and Lady Snowblood.

  • J.J. Abrams a hack. LOL
