  • Jesus ! This old chestnut had Jimi Hendrix met Dominoes era Clapton we wouldn't be having this discussion now, Clapton embodies something that is beyond Hendrix and his Acid infused rifferey and that is blues in the soul from being through hardship and trials Jimi's legacy has got fat off the carrion of could have been's and to be honest except 5 or 6 strokes of live genius and Electric Ladyland he's a player I could have lived without.

  • I always knew who they were but I never listened to them but then one night I was high I looked up " good songs to listen to while stoned" and The Beatles - I am the Walrus was #1 my favorite song of all time.

  • As far as McCartney, I really don't understand the mania of the Beatles then or now. They were big, but I don't even listen to their music, it holds no interest for me whatsoever. Even Lennon I don't really like, to me the whole Beatles thing (although important in rock/pop history) bears little meaning for me personally. McCartney always seems so pompous and I never remember any line or song quality from him. If it weren't for the phenomenon called 'Beatles' no one would listen to him now.

  • @pppppatrikkkkk chuckle

  • @pppppatrikkkkk One word for what you wrote: NUTS!

  • @jgg87 Why nuts? Nuts is thinking this guy is some genius and his music is any good.

  • Unique melodies such as in May This Be Love and other songs of beauty, you cannot fake that, there is magic in that music that cannot be explained. Clapton has always been kind of mute on the matter of Jimi. Expressing praise here and there, yes, but my thinking is he was utterly shocked by Jimi and he lost a certain standing he evidently liked having back then. Beck has been quite a bit more honest about Jimi and the effect he had on them at the time.

  • Perfect thing to say for Jimi, if he did say it. Clapton more of technical, perfectionist type guy and player, whereas Jimi was the storm of music himself. Jimi was not mean like putting Clapton down or anything, but the reality is Jimi was way over Clapton's head and still is. If you connect your passion, spirit and intelligence straight to your guitar that is what Jimi did. It's not a trick, you can really feel his soul in some of the songs, like directly translated by his guitar.

  • it seems jus by voicing my opinion in a public forum, it offended some "really sensitive" folk. boo fukin hoo. check yourselves. your throwing stones for someones OPINION. look in the mirror. you forget i never insulted noone yet you call me names, like im in still in school, wake up we all are

  • hendrix worshiped the group.. cream... infact so much over a 2 year stretch... hendrix covered.. almost 10 cream tunes... jimi was lso very sad the day the cream split as can be seen on.. the lulu show... if both were alive today these conversations wouldn't be happening.. we'd be seeing a hendrix/clapton tour !!!

  • had so much respect for mcartney but why is he slagging jimmi here

  • @pandion1951 omg get serious..... it was something that happened at a time when jimmi was trying to be funny. I am sure Paul was not slamming anyone. He was just telling a story of what happened at a concert. Even heros can show a sense of humour. Jimmi wasn't serious about Eric tuning anything, as if he would expect him to. Be serious here. Musicians joking amoungst musicians. If you were there, you would have seen the humour...

  • Clearly, Paul was joking. Clapton and Townshed would have fought each other to see who would have gotten to blow Jimi first.

  • Hendrix was clearly taking the piss out of Eric but I'm sure it was taken in good humor. Bit of banter between pros, who also happened to be good pals by the way. Clapton was supposed to be meeting up with Hendrix after a Sly Stone gig in London the night he died. He had a guitar he wanted to give him apparently.

  • ITS A JOKE, JIMI WAS KIDDING

  • not:im offended at the way he supposedly mimics jimi by saying "can you tune this" . by doing that, the way he did it. jimi is not here to defend himself so why even bring it up. maybe he thought it would be a funny story but i dont. jus sayin

  • @MsReignman I don't mean to offend, but clearly your comprehension is not very high. Spend more time studying and less time analyzing perceived slights against your hero and you'll benefit immensely, I promise.

  • @superman11978 when u tell sumone their "comprehension isn't very high". its obviously meant to offend.my advice for your effort. analyzing is studying and vice versa. you would benefit greatly by constructing your comments intelligently, then keeping them to yourself.

  • ive considered every point that you all made. and i stick with my first assesment. altho i didnt see the whole performance and i dont know the context of which he uses this story. but i am a bit offended by paul mccartney. knowing the genius of hendrix the brits were jeolous of him bcuz he was the walking, talking, breathing testament to the true blues that eluded them. they were listening to guys like tbone and diddley and here is a true bluesman amongst them. a living legend.

  • @MsReignman and yet Jimi Hendrix said the best blues player ever to have existed was Clapton? People are right - your comprehension is so fricking low it's in the Mariana Trench...and before you go commenting on people's "intelligence" learn to spell huh? ;)

  • @maltelundell - Yes it can be done. You did well. Also remember back in the day no electronic tuners.

  • I just think its a silly exercise to compare guitarists and say one is better...you can say which one YOU like more....but dont tell me who is "better"..not even sure what that means anymore......real artists are people who create unique expressions.....is Dylan a lousy guitarist?......what a silly thing to even think!

  • Actually, to have your name even mentioned by arguably the best singer songwriter in the past 50 years, is a compliment.

  • Relevant fact from a dude from the day. It can be almost impossible to tune your guitar when you're tripping.

  • @gwalker134 I have, although the acid today is nothing compared to the shit that was on the streets those days... x)

  • guitar 16 thats gold, like the beautiful mind burning riffs played by jimi and of course doctor darren 'ray' redden. i just wish you guys could have been there to see ray play his control feel and phrasing were amazing. his tone was equal if not better than rev billy gibbons, avirtuoso he could play six guitars at once, and a harmonica. but turn on you if you weren't careful! garrot you with an E string, lovely bloke though, always good to mum,SELF RAISING FLOWERS

  • jimmy an eric was cool

  • Look the first time Eric saw Jimmy play Eric was blown away. And it wasn't at the Cream concert But Jimi was just as amazed at Eric's ability to produce sounds where it seemed his hand never played them. Anyway read Eric's autobiography answers allot of questions.

  • How about Jimi was being Sarcastic cause He was godlike compared to Clapton!!!

  • Go Gent Bent Paul...You Limey

  • you freakin' idiots...Jimi was pulling Eric's leg....you dumb heads..

how can you people be so freakin' stupid......he was twickin' Eric's whislte...

what a bunch of freakin' morons on here.....

Paul is telling the truth...it's a memory in his life...you dumbheads...what in the hell are you talking about? Jimi didn't need anybody to tune his guitar.....wake up...

  • hendrix was probably too high to tune it. cause that guy knows a guitar like the back of his hand.

  • lol

    \

  • Jimi was SO good that Clapton and Beck walked out - Jimi was laughing and joking with him. The REAL STORY : ) Jimi tuned his guitar by ear while playing at the same time : ) High or NOT it is a SPIRITUAL THING and ABILITY

  • @drmel37 I heard that Clapton walked out but not Beck. In fact Beck is the one guitarist Jimi sought out when he went to England - tha tis pretty well established - not to take anything away from the Hendix's genius but taht is what I heard.

  • Do you believe everything you hear??

  • It's a joke, people!

  • LIES hahha mccartney died way back this dude is an imposter

  • Hey dude. Jimmy was having a joke. They were all mates.

  • @sonyz200 its jimi

  • three fine musicians. each dedicated to music, hard working and good men. why all the comparisons ? clapton is a masterful perfectionist learning to let go a bit. mccartney the same. hendrix was so much more relaxed and into experimenting. why compare ? there are millions of really incredible musicians playing today. anyone of them would mesmerize clapton, mccartney and hendrix. and they'd pay the cover to do it. well maybe not sir paul. sorry, i was channeling john.
  • @journey46 jimi was a perfectionist. he got a little obsessive and aggressive on electric ladyland

  • Fuck this liberal piece of shit.

  • he said the exact same story in Detroit last Sunday xD

  • Yes, Jimi was being playful. Clapton got the name "Slowhand" because he would take so much time tuning his guitar during shows in the early days that the Brits would start their thing of clapping slowly, giving him the 'slow hand'. It was even worse when Clapton broke a string. You had to wait for that to be changed and then the tuning began.

  • thats sounds like a lie. jimi was way too proficiant a guitarist to need anyone to tune his instrument u can see him do it in countless times during songs how he did it effortlessly. i think paul is such friends with clapton that he downplays jimi's genius to give his friend props

  • @MsReignman I know, he was an amazing guitarist, I have seen him tune his guitar. As much as I love both Paul McCartny and Eric Clapton, it's pretty obvious that Jimi Hendrix was a much better guitarist. I think that he was doing it just to be playful, I could see him doing that.

  • @Pinetailwarrior i"m glad you like other "s watched jimi"s hands as he tuned his guitar while playing and Paul himself knows to this day that jimmy was only teasing

  • @Pinetailwarrior This bit about guitar gods and who is better is horse crap. There is no real metric to measure music or musical prowess.

  • @Pinetailwarrior It's a fact that Paul was so impressed with Jimi when he saw him the first time, that he went up and advised him to play Monterey! As told by Chas Chandler! He was joking here!

  • @MsReignman maybe so but jimi did often play his guitar untuned and even though he tuned it a lot i think maybe he mightve had a problem tuning it perfectly. even so, if hendrix was aware that he killed god, i dont think he wouldve thrown it in his face by asking him to tune his guitar. it wasnt his style. unless he was doing it without realizing it. but ur probably right. he probably was just kidding around

  • @MsReignman

I see it more of Jimi ragging on Clapton, man. Instead of saying "Hey, Eric, do you wanna come up and jam with me?" like when Jimi first asked to jam with Cream, because he knew he killed him last time and Eric just stood there, it's like "Hey, man, would you like to tune my guitar?"

That's pretty much the musicians' equivalent to "shine my shoes, biotch." haha

  • @MsReignman This is McCartney telling a story about Hendrix fooling around and showing that he had a very cool human side. Nobody thinks that Paul is trying to tear down Hendrix.

  • @MsReignman It was jimi being a wise azz!!!

  • @MsReignman Obviously it was a joke...........

  • @MsReignman yes..he tuned his own guitar in his shows...years after the incident Paul is referring too, get ur facts straight before u question a Beatle's authenticity u knobjockey

  • @MsReignman Well Jimi was kinda arrogant, he was being arrogant when he asked that!, He knew he was better than Clapton, by jimi doing that it was like telling Clapton to shine his shoes lol!!!!

  • @musicdiehard Nothing else need being said ( HENDRIX WAS SAYING IF GOD IS HER SO HIM TO ME)

  • @qquincysee what r u talkin about?

  • @MsReignman Hendrix was notorious for being unable to get in tune. He bent the hell out of those strings and most of the time spent at a Hendrix show was spent watching him tuning up.

  • @Allrightteam You're right there - tone deaf - Like Beethoven. Listen to a live recording again and you'll notice half of it is him trying to tune his guitar.... Thank god he couldn't...

  • @MsReignman please ... this is Jimi saluting Eric not Jimi surrendering his guitar skills. You have to remember that Clapton and Cream were at the top of their game at that time. Jimi calls that out.

  • @MsReignman It was more as if he was mocking Eric as a joke. From what I learned Eric was God when it came to guitar in the late 60s, no one would mess with him. Then Hendrix came out and blew him and everyone else out of the water with his crazy stage presence and amp effects. I mean, he played with his teeth! But all aside, Eric and Jimi where great friends and would jam together everytime they got a chance.

  • @MsReignman there is an element of truth to it but Eric wasnt there, the story i heard was that Clapton was watching a tape of Jimis performance with Al Kooper and on the tape before Jimi was about to perform Wild thing you could tell the guitar Jimi had was way out of tune and clapton just yelled at the film ' what are you going to do now?' so Jimi showed him what he was going to do

  • @MsReignman This story has been told by numerous people including clapton as well. So probably playful but still a good story.

  • @MsReignman It's not a lie. This happened and has been confirmed. Don't get into hero worship where you start denying reality.

  • @MsReignman hendrix did it as a gesture to clapton, not because he needed his guitar tuned dumbass
