what's that part of percussion, that guy with yarn mallets is playing??? the 'tick'-ing thing... i always hear that in music and this is the first time i saw it...
@HipHopkins09 Yeah I've seen some of those songs from that concert at the roundhouse and it was lame. I understand completely where your coming from. My favorite FZ records are stuff like Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Make a Jazz Noise Here, etc. Although the Q and A in the beginning seemed to be cool
@HipHopkins09 well the varese comparison is a little bit of a stretch but i still think of zorn as a modern day zappa of sorts. with the amount of genre shifting, prolificness, and overall quality of work, the comparison is understandable.
The account of the siege of Masada was related to Josephus by two women who survived the suicide by hiding inside a cistern along with five children, and repeated Eleazar ben Ya'ir's exhortations to his followers, prior to the mass suicide, verbatim to the Romans. Because Judaism strongly discourages suicide, Josephus reported that the defenders had drawn lots and killed each other in turn, down to the last man, who would be the only one to actually take his own life.
This was totally awesome! It's one of my compulsory listenings for a music course but I'll be sure to listen to these guys in my free time too. All the notes the sax player picked were great, but as a sax player I can't help but say that if he took out the tension in his neck/shoulder his sound would improve so much.
listen to Michael Tsarion on the youtube. he is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. Leo Zagami and Dr. Bill Deagle are highly informative as well.
Yeah. Sounds like 15 years after the real Miles left, the true Miles came back - as rabbi. :-) A revelation. And Kenny Wollesen wears a t-shirt of the anarcho-syndicalists I really love these guys!
its funny i read a interview of him on the internet from 2000 and the reporter thought that zorn was like zappa. it was interesting hearing what zorn had to say about zappa
sorry i dont have a link but if you type in john zorn interview on the first or second page youll find it. there arent that many interviews of him so it would be quick to find.
Well I knew that he picked up the sax cuzza Braxton but does he really talk about Braxton that much? I've never even heard him mention Braxton before just read the Wiki where it said he picked it up cuzza him . . . the Stalling one YEAH . . . I got a Stalling CD (through Zorn's influence I started listening to that stuff again) and unbeknownst to me when I got it I found there was an essay at the beginning by Zorn . . . fine writer turns out
What's funny is that David Sanborn played on one of Tim Berne's albums, Diminutive Mysteries (Mostly Hemphill), a single recording whose virtues far exceed most of what could be found on John Zorn's 6 dozen albums.
By the way, Zorn was never the most original Ameican musician. With his recent composed work, I think he's finally starting to bloom out of his 'weird-for-the-sake-of-weird' po-mo bullshit period. The endlessly redundant Masada empire seems to be the funding for all that.
really have to call crap on that statement. he doesn't owe the so called avant-guard anything. he's a gift that just keeps giving. like an air conditioner or a kitten.
Yes!! On top of featuring more of Wolleson's awesome playing, Sex Mob has the excellent Briggan Krauss, a sax player who's only about 100 times more compelling than Zorn.
Yes, they would, but is fantastic versatility of compositions from Metal (Moonchild) to violin concertos (From Silence to Sorcery) to classical movements hearkening visions of Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Bingen, and Mertens that got him the notoriety to be called a genius at farting.
no... it's exactly the same performance... they have recorded it from mezzo chanel and put on DVD... i should make a copy for myself... and i'll put it here, for sure...

I watched Zorn crumple an empty potato chip bag around a mic at a show. Goes to show what lengths an artist will go to innovate.

Yes, he uses it in the end of the video, I try to learn it, it's very hard.
You have, when you play, to keep air in your cheeks, and at the same time to blow it, and to breathe by nose...

Over the years, Zorn went from being the most original American musician of his time to being the avant-garde's answer to David Sanborn. It's sad.
fib4773 3 years ago
