Not sure what you are thinking of with "charging time." The solenoid response is pretty much instantaneous as soon as it sees voltage, no charging delay. Solenoids are electromagnets, not capacitors. There is surely a physical delay of a few milliseconds for the triggering to take place, but that is tuned in to our overall delay from the sight line to the play line. These are continuous duty solenoids, meaning they can be energized continuously without overheating.
Another question (thanks for answering these by the way! :D): I read that your robot was pretty accurate for the expert level - that's impressive stuff. But don't solenoid actuators have a pretty immense charging time? What was your charging time like? Or did you use some sort of continuous duty system? And if there was a charging time, how did you manage to play notes continuously... in certain cases, aren't there like... 10 notes in a row or so before a pause on each key?
I remember titan. I do recall beating him on more than one occasion in Denver, but still an awesome project. I expect to see something equally awesome come next year.
First they make a video-game out of musical instruments (thumbs down), and then they make a robot do the work for you (thumbs down). Please, learn to play the actual guitar.
You should have bought a usb tv card and used it to get a more accurate video signal than the webcam enables. I used to be part of team 1807 (Redbird Robotics), but they never let me do anything even though I had a lot of technical knowledge (and computer knowledge like programming, and Unix/Linux environments). :(
@modmadmike2 The whole point of the robot is to visually watch the TV screen along with a human opponent, and mechanically operate the guitar just as a human player would. There are many electronic shortcuts that could have been taken, such as processing the video signal directly, or outputting electric signals to the guitar. These would be easier, but would somewhat defeat the purpose of the project, and would not be nearly as interesting to watch.
@fezz124 No. The most difficult task is accurate vision interpretation of the notes and that is simply not 100% with our low-cost system. Also being a mechanical system there is always some opportunity for miscues in the actuation of the guitar over hundreds of notes. It is accurate enough to be a pretty tough challenge and very entertaining.
team 3197 leader here.....i believe i beat this robot on expert raining blood......still insanely good though, i had to exploit its weakness to beat it.
Hey, good for you, you are a good player. The lower the difficulty, the easier he is to beat. He is "tuned" to play on expert and does not play other levels as well. We don't really consider him "beaten" unless you beat him on expert. A few people have.
So every time the camera senses the light at a certain point it pushes the corresponding button? This would be great for getting achievements on Xbox 360.
It is a little more complicated than that. The fire plumes, fret bar lines, guitar backgrounds, and lightning strikes all interfere with just looking for light.
Pretty sweeet. I wish my team did something like this.

Very cool. Looks like that school has a good amount of money to spend too, I know my high school couldn't afford to do ANYTHING like this.

@Tahlorn Our school had no part in funding the robot. It was paid for through team fundraising and donations of materials from mentors.
