Thanks LoneMyth - I have the book with the poem of the Battle of Maldon but I never knew it was such a massive fight of two armies - the poem is very much talking in terms of small shield walls & teams of men or individual soldiers views - I suppose that is very realistic as in a fight you can only account for your own actions - its good that this documentary backs up the context of the poem.
We actually just decided that we were so overpowered, that we'd give the world a chance. How? By changing a key element from our values; To live, get drunk and die bravely! >:D
As far as it seems, only russia still has the fighting spirit compared to any other europeans. They fight all the time for minor injuries and disagreements.Liberalisms killed the viking spirit, not christianity.
@AdamForExample I never knew that being a berserker meant to be an asshole.Christianity brought unification to the vikings.Viking spirit still existed, the raids on innocent people themselves stopped. The reason why viking spirit died out is because of modern day people, politics, society and societal direction.People care more about eating, drinking, women, money, take a shit, and sleep, and have no desire for exploration, fighting, sailing, sports and what not.
@AdamForExample Who told you that? Islam causes war today, but NO other religion on the planet does."religion" is general while "islam" is specific.Islam is a militant religion and the only one like that.As a christian, I don't like that many christians are assholes by character, but being a fan doesn't make them followers for christ, which is where the name "christianity" comes from. It's not religion that causes war, but politics.Take your pick, religious people as a whole don't start wars.
... Christianity marked the greatest part of the viking age. It was under the 2nd christian danish king, Sven Tveskæg, that England was conquered, and ruled by danes for several generations.
@Varia0 Hehe, I'll have to disagree, Christianity, in quite a few case in the Medieval time, was a thin sauce over a big steak of barbaric bloodlust. :P. The Normans went on to be prolific raiders from the 11th to the 14th century, and King Harald Hardrada (Don't know if I spelt it right) was a Christian Viking king, that still found the time to unfurl the banner named "Land Waster", and make a bit for the English throne. The result being the two battles of Stamford Bridge in 1066 A.D.
@Varia0 Obviously, the Normans were Vikings, not Franks, they settled in the region of what is now Normandy, after accepting an offer by the Frankish king to settle there, convert to Christianity, and protect them against their fellow Norsemen (You can see where the name Normandy comes from.), these Christians then went on to expand explosively all across Europe, settling in Sicily, Southern Italy, waging war against the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire...
@Varia0 ..And evening fighting in the Crusades, especially the lives of Robert Guiscard and his son Bohemund, the Dukes of Appulia (I think) read like good old fashioned adventure books, and that even while they were Christians.
Bohemund is even described in Anna Komnena (The Byzantine historian, and daughter of the Emperor) her book, the "Alexiad", as a fearsome man, who once, after pissing off the Byzantines, had to smuggle himself out of a castle in a coffin filled with dead smelly rats. :D
the fun thing of the english paying of the vikings is that when they get back home and tell the tales, more vikings sees an opertunity :)
