I inquired of someone working on the site what had happened to the stained glass windows from the chapel and was told that Dayton Public Schools has possession of them.
As of 01/18/2012, contractors are currently removing asbestos from the school building proper. The convent and chapel sections have already been cleaned up and demolition is set to begin on those portions in the next few days. I believe the person I spoke with estimated demolition could be completed in the next 5-6 weeks.
thanks for the memories. I attended Julienne in 1959 and it was a great school and then being an all girl school felt the strength of all of us as a group the best days of my life. Geneva Heid Freeman
Actually, the building has 2 companies offering to renovate it. St. Mary's sent a letter of commitment to city hall and recently Edwin C. Moses's brother called to offer to rehab the site for senior housing. It would not remain vacant. The issue is that DPS has the funds to renovate from the construction levy. They also have land that they already own in the area to biold. They simply would prefer to threaten the community and walk away .
I feel sympathy for the building...the fact remains, if it stays...it will not be renovated. I think as much as what can be preserved...should, but it is time to let go. Would the community rather have a large decaying property or something that the community needs, another school? If any building should have been saved, it was Roosevelt, a place with far more cultural and historical relevance to Dayton and the region. Come to grips...Julienne needs to go. Preserve what you can and move on.
Seriously, why should any one preserve historical sites. This is America, why preserve when we can tear down and build new. Its for the children of course.
Why? it is part of our culture and our heritage, there are only so many origional art deco buildings left, we need to preserve it for future generations, let it be around so that people can see what real art was, not the ugly modern buildings that only have a plastic facade that looks like the old buildings, let it be around so that it can be studied.
WIth in hours of this post another old highschool is about to be torn down Mcintosh High School Auburn Indiana, and the gym is historical
Well at least yours is safe, I have 80 photos I took of Mcintosh on thursday october 9, 2009, the whole thing is comming down, throught the weekend they will finish romoveing any asbestos, and monday they start Ballin the Walls. I wish I could put the wrecking ball in the back of my truck and take it away to hide it so they cant tear it down, but they still have two clam shells, and a larger grapple for the two excavators they have sitting next to the gym one has a bucket on it one dont. :(
i go to cj bu tmy grandma wen to julienne. it's a beutiful school. or it was. i don't know about anymore since stivers has been in and out. what will happen to the building?
I attended high school in this building in the seventies when it was Dayton Christian HS. It is a shame to loose all of that art work and stained glass. Thanks for the video. It brought back some memories.
Dayton was once a great city. Now, well... It's a shame. Dayton View, for example, is a sad state with reminders of once was. Is there a link to save Roth High School?
I actually went to Elementary school in that building, when it was owned by Dayton Christian Schools, and live close by. It would be a shame to see it go...
I did not watch it all the way through the first time. Dang girl, that has tons of stainglass, more then many of the churches in the area that I live in. which would be in indiana. there is soo much art in the building it would be a shame to lose it.
Infact it resembles a church and has more romenesque art then most of the romanesque churches that I have seen in our diocese. Yea I am catholic.
Very impressive; thanx for my first inside tour of Julienne, some 40 years after graduating from Alter HS, Kettering. Despite having family on Homewood Av, 2 blocks from Julienne, and 3 older girl cousins who graduated from J, as a boy I was never welcome at Julienne, saw only the outside. Chaminade, sure; dropped in often. I'm sure things loosened up just a few years after I left town, but now do you see why it's hard to get support for this? No imprinting on half the population.
I wish our highschool had this much art. of course I bet the building had a musty smell as do most that are that old our highschool was built in the 1920's and we added on but it dont have the craftsman designes on the outside on the new addition as the old part does, let alone any art inside just white walls and the fiberboard drop ceilings that have the holes in them like many places do.
Just a note to let you know that the City of Dayton Landmarks meeting will be on Aug. 16th at 3 Pm , City Hall. This will be the first step in saving Julienne. If it does not pass the Landmarks meeting, it is over and Julienne will be demolished. Please attend if you can or send letters of support to the City of Dayton Ohio at:

What a beautiful piece of architecture, decorated gorgeously.
EJ Brown was full of valuable acrchitectural antiques that were not removed and they were destroyed, first by vandals and then by the wrecking ball.
I hope CJ gets more respect.
