Gloom gameplay is way faster than NS (speed, duration of rounds, size of map, etc). And Tremulous, while still being closer to the Gloom original speed than NS, have its own particularities.

Gloom, Tremulous and Natural Selection are the great expression of diversity :)

Also, my POV on the "Tremulous vs Natural Selection" debate is the following :

We should be fucking glad we have these two.

It means this particular type of game (2 teams multiplayer RTS-FPS) have gained enough importance to spawn more variants.

It means there's still some unknown part of this concept to be explored, that the genre is not "dead", "out of juice" or whatever you call it, it's alive.

It's like Warsow and Q3A/QLive, we need both.

Wikipedians are total idiots (and I really mean it) when it comes to "underground" culture like mods, they delete all the non-mainstream content (websites, mods, games, events)

so they removed the Gloom article and now you can't easily get accurate informations on that very important mod that spawned two majors other mods (Tremulous/NaturalSelection) and now one standalone (NS2)

Tremulous (first release : August 19 2005) is the Quake3 engine unofficial (NOT by the Team Reaction devteam) sequel to the Gloom mod on Quake II (first release : 30th January, 1999)

Natural Selection is a Half-Life 1 mod (first release : October 31, 2002) directly inspired by the same Gloom mod

Both are awesome (and different) :D

@DeTantalus Actually this is a sequel to Natural Selection, which came before Tremulous. So if anything Tremulous is based on NS! Doesn't make either of the games any less awesome though! :)

the first was so much fun, being an alien, stealthing at a turn and jumping out to bite a marine in the ass

@LancelotNZL It is using an in-house built engine known as Spark. It is neat because you can modify things outside and have the game open in another window and see change as far I understand. It is also based largely in lua and very easy to modify. Beyond that it has its limitations though. If you look in the trailer water and shootable glass(transparent surfaces are still enabled) are absent but, hey I think the dark industrial look provides a better atmosphere anyway.

They made their own engine from the ground up.

It's called spark and can add so much dynamic lighting to an environment that it doesn't lag up the server.
