Their cheaper irons suck. I have a 35W and the tip just disappears, I have to keep grinding a new tip when it goes flat. On the flip side though, I've used their soldering stations before like the WES51 and they are the bomb. Some companies produce good and bad products... doesn't make weller a bad company but I'll never buy another cheap iron from them again. Looking into a station though, whole different story.
Just a note, the cheap Weller stuff and most of the US Weller products are (including the irons in the vid) are made on the cheap in Mexico (even says so on the pack), good quality Weller equipment is made in Germany. Being in the UK myself, most of the cheap irons are also made in Germany over here, but those orange handled ones are always made in Mexico by the looks of it. I have one too and its not so great, my WD1000 Weller station on the other hand....whole different ball game!
I really wonder how much you paid for that (chinese) CRAP?
If it's 10 US$, than you certainly have been fooled by the dealer.
REAL Weller lasts (almost for LIFE!!).
I have here a WELLER EC-2002 soldering station, and... I bought it in 1981 (the year of it's introduction, discontinued in 2002), and my EC 2002 is STILL working, day in day out.
Let's calculate. It's now 2011 and I bought it in 1981.
Mine is 2011 - 1981 = 30 years old.
I paid a LOT, because of the digital temperature control!
@herksen No Weller does have their "Marksman" irons in Red. They are bottom of barrel entry-level irons. The light blue ones are typically for the professional level.
I bought a soldering iron with the same type of tip, same thing happened it corroded. I use my schools ones which are 15 years old, have iron tips, go through daily rough student use and it still works great, gonna buy a fucken butane one
Radio Shack's irons are made by other OEMs, some by Weller. Like Sears they don't make anything they contract someone to make a product with their name on it. Everything anymore is a total piece of Chinese crap and no cheaper than the US made quality ones used to be. They know these things will fail and you will buy replacements more often so they make more money on it. I have a Weller from the early 80's that still works great to this day and I solder a lot.
Even thought the iron SHOULD have worked fine I would suggest going for a bit better iron. Personally I have a WES51 station and have use a few lower end Weller irons. Cheaper plastic handled irons like that just are not quality products. A good weller will probably last you your lifetime.
Lead-free solder, not cleaning it properly, not tinning the tip before use? Almost irons corrode there eventually though. Don't get the cheapo quasi-weller stuff like this and just spend $20-40 on a decent Weller.
p.s. I wouldn't screw around with the insides to try make it work
Watch out! Your hand is making it super hot for its' standards!
I really like my Weller whs-40 soldering station. It had been in an accessible display stand for years before I bought it as the last piece in the store. I dislike those models you have as they are too big in hand for anything I do.
you should get a wlc100

I have that one, but that's the cheapest of them all! My WP25 continues to work just fine. Their cheapest should still work though. Unacceptable.

Some news for you:
By coincidence I promised my EC 2002 soldering station to a friend of mine, who is interested in soldering electronics.
TODAY I bought a NEW Weller soldering station.
The WX2020. Just Google for WX2020.
I'm now 55 years old, and this new (state of the art!!) unit will simply OUTLIVE me...
Cheers

Hi,
From your video I IMMEDIATELY noticed that your 'WELLER' soldering iron is PHONEY stuff.
Not everything that has the WELLER brandname slapped on it IS actually a Weller.
Moreover, the color is simply WRONG, all WELLER soldering irons are light blue.
Yours is horribly red/orange. So next time to go for WELLER: it's Light Blue!!
Even the packaging that you show in the video is phoney!!!
WELLER products come in similar cartons, but with white, red and blue colors.
