JUST AS EXPECTED! EVERYTHING THE JOHN PERKINS SAID IN HIS BOOK IS TRUE & IS STILL BEING SEEN RIGHT NOW IN OUR FINANCIAL SYSTEM... GO JOHN PERKINS...!!! PERKINS FOR PRESIDENT!!!
I have not yet read his book HOODWINKED but recommend John Perkins' two previous titles, THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE and especially CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HIT MAN.
Predatory Capitalism is a phrase I have been using for the past 5 years. I used it when discussing economics with my ultra conservative friends. The college I attended loved Milton Friedman economics. Thom you are the man. Keep fighting the good fight!!!!
Predatory Capitalism: The role of Buisness is to maximise Profits regardless of Social or Environmental Costs, Regulation is always bad and Privatisation is always good.
No you have it wrong my freind, I am not advocating predatory Captitalism at all, I am with John Perkins and Thom Hartmann i was mearly expressing what Predatory Capitalism is.
If you read John Perkins new book, he doesn't say that he is totally anti-capitalist. He believes that would be unrealistic. The point is to have the leaders of the major corporations understand or aware of their "externalities", or learn to be good neighbors. The reason I am responding to you is because I don't believe that socialism is the answer, and since you are young , there is still a lot left for you to consider.
Agreed, capitalism isn't the problem. It is the people who create and manage the system being corrupt that is the problem. that problem is even worse with socialism. We need to stop accepting that people "at the top" of the corporate ladder are always on our side. Billions in bonuses for little value. Exploitation using manipulated markets. Cronism and country club board room deals. These things need to stop. If we truly embraced markets with regulation geared towards honesty, we do fine.
What I mean is before you declare yourself a Socialist, consider no system is perfect. Capitalism does have problems of greed, corruption, and the disproportionate and outrageous salaries of corp., ceo's. , however for all of the flaws of capitalism, its still the best method for people to create a better life for themselves. Capitalism has its drawbacks, but socialism actually leads to bigger problems, like people losing there initiative. Let Guvmnt feed me , clothe me., etc.
Also let me say one other thing. John Perkins wrote a book called "Confessions of an Economic Hitman". What he does is expose the what a lot of people don't believe or know. That the foriegn policy of this country has been secretly based on empire building. He calls it a global corporate empire. But, again he does not recommend dismantling capitalism. That would be too unrealistic.

Many of Richard Nixons fiscal policies would be considered "left-wing" by todays standards, such as his GAI proposal.

It's NOT really profit is it, if it's at the expense of more than it benefits?

The Problem with Predatory Capitalism is that at the very end, it will consume even those at the very top.

So you would advocate privitizing our road system, fire and police depts., postal service?
Remember: Maximize profits REGARDLESS of social and environmental costs- that means up to and including your life, and the life of your family.
