According to the liner notes, it is a song from Romsdal (an area in Norway), no mention made of Child ballads. However, a Google search reveals that the basic motif is found in quite a lot of versions from throughout Europe, the oldest known version being from Germany and the Netherlands in the late 1400s. It is thought to have reached our country through Danish prints from the 1600s. It is commonly known as the "Graf und Nonne" ballad among german-speakers.
