I can't wait till the M1A3. The weight is supposed to be stripped down to 60 tons(Goal), the gun is being replaced with the L55(I think). Prototype should be out 2014(For sure).

The Leopard 2A7 was already shown, there are already some pictures out there ;) It looks like a tank from C&C xD But they shouldn't decrease the weight of tanks, since it mosty goes on cost of the armor.

nearly the same, the Gun will be replaced by the XM360E1. The Prototype, the M1E3 is already tested in Fort Knox, it is in development, the Prototype uses the Old Gas Turbine, but the Final Model can still have a Diesel Engine, like the General Dynamics Export M1.

It's a great tank, but there are others than rank up there alongside the Abrams (i.e. the German Leopard.

As far as "the best trained military branches in the world," I assume you meant soldiers, and if you ever compared the budget the U.S. puts into our military forces, you'll see why we have the biggest and most bad-ass on the planet. Surely though, England's military doesn't come close to the title of "the best." After the U.S. it would easily be Israel; from there it's debatable. Scout out.

I love this tank and have fought along guys who have commanded and manned them (I'm a driver in an M2 Bradley, First Armored Divsion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 37th ARmored Regiment), but I hate the engine. It just guzzles gas and makes it impossible to walk behind. I can't tell you how many new guys I see walk behind these tanks in Baghdad and nearly get their faces burned off, or how I outran them in the 2003 Invasion. Still it was fun watching them blow up T72s like wildfire.

Not quite correct my friend. The Leo has seen combat in A-Stan. Not tank vs. tank, but it has seen combat. Canadian tankers scored the first ever combat kill in a Leo 2A6M. And since the Abrams uses the same gun, the Leo can kill anything the Abrams can. Both tanks kick ass, but the Leo has the advantage with the diesel power pack.

Problem with the Leopard 2(A6) is that it is under armoured, that's exactly why the British government built the Challenger, otherwise we'd have Leopards.

The Challenger 2 fleet from Jan '06 has been having new Rheinmetal L\55's fitted. The old L-30 is the same length (L\55) as the Rheinmetall one so the new gun fits snug into the old thermal cover.

The M1 Abrams series should soon be getting a gun upgrade, a new guns that's about a 3rd of the M256 weight, it's called the XM360. If you look it up I'm sure there are some other new features it has.

Same applies to all countries although Russia has done really well with the T-72 (T-90 = T-72BM...) / T-80 series. ERA seems to work well for them.

Israelis have their new Iron Fist APS which is pretty damn cool from my perspective.

French have their NERA.

The Abrams however does have a really good FLIR/fire control system and gun+ammunition.

If an M829A1 round could slice through 2 T-72's (500-600mm armour), then the M829A3 must be pretty impressive.

That would be a HE shell.

What HEAT does is that it has a revers cone inside it that has a layer of explosive on the outside of the cone.Once the explosive detonates,on imp,it will follow the weakest point,the top point of the cone,and concentrated all the power of the explosion into a"heat"beam of energy that will burn through the armor and super heat the air inside the enemy tank.

A explosion happens when the heated air expands faster than the speed of sound.

Hmm just have a look to Afghanistan ;) There are Leopards in Service already. You should check your Infos. One Canadian Leopard 2A6M was driving over an IED, all survived , Leopard could drive further on. Later a Canadian General thanked the german guys of KMW who build the Leopard 2 that the german technology saved the life of these Soldiers. Also a Leopard was attacked by two serbs with an AK47 ;))

If you think a export version of the T-55 and T-72 with poor trained crews are a match for an M1A1 you don't know much about the "combat proved" M1A1. The American had thermal sights , night vision , laser range finders and all that stuff. The Iraq didn't even had trained crews or any of these modern technology. They had export versions of old russian tanks, with simple sttel armor. How many Abrams get destroyed in the last battle? IED's? hm? does i have to say more? :))

@marksman712 True. If people really want to know which nations have well trained and disciplined professional military forces, they just need to talk to the boots on the ground. Most reports I've read from troops or embedded reporters (on the US side) have high praise for the fighting capabilities of a lot of our allies. British, Aussie, and Kiwis are always on the top of that list.

I'd have to say the IDF is the top military force in the world. Marines are impressed by them....says a lot.
