  • My opinion on that is that the received musicology which places Victoria on top stems from the assessment of 19th century experts who put more stead (too much, I would say) on the musical expression of words. This often meant that music with a more complex weave of polyphony could be neglected in favour of the smoother styles of Palestrina , Victoria, etc. I feel that is why, for example, Josquin is much more famous than Gombert, while many consider Gombert's counterpoint only 2nd to Bach's.

  • I notice most comments here are in Spanish. Can I ask a question of his compatriots? Is Morales now regarded in Spain as the greatest Spanish Renaissance composer? He is my favourite, and second to him I would put Guerrero, before Victoria. Naturally, I adore the music of all three but I always thought Victoria got too much attention at the expense of the others. Have I spoken out of turn? Does anyone agree?

  • @alipitogen Morales, Guerrero and Victoria are regarded in Spain as the greatest ones, of course, but they use to say Victoria is the best one. I just cannot choose between them. It depends on the day, hehe.
