@30GB I like to desolder those caps and use a bridge rectifier and just charge up about 8 of them, and then short it out, it makes big booms. Its quite fun.

Interesting, most VCRs have a chassis FUSEthat should blow. And a switching supply should also blow the bridge or transistors before the dang thing would smoke like that. Did you bypass that stuff?
