"cultural hearbeat-" the mass growth in atheism.

It sounds to me--though I may be projecting--like the lament of someone who sees himself bound by "the myths that nursed [him]" and is trying to escape that by "put[ting] his faith in the hard of heart." Neither heartlessness and "the beauty gene" nor believing in "nursery myths" satisfies him, but he's fluctuating between the two as he tries to find an acceptable middle ground.
