this is the Yoruba language and the chant is from the Yoruba religion originating out of West Africa. it is a praise and acknowledgement of one of the Orishas (Gods) Oshun, but before one can praise any Orisha one must go thru Elegba(Orisha of the Crossroads... Gatekeeper like). that is why you here "ey ey elegba". My mom is one of the singers and my Pop is the founding member of this group--The Last Poets

I remember when X-Clan sampled this back in the day. I just now got around to hearing THIS original version about 2 months back.
