That was awesome! What a great little slice of history. Not the kind of thing you'd see on a History Channel program about the war. Glad someone felt this "mundane" moment was worth putting on film. Thanks for sharing!
I liked the part at 1.36 where the guy was using a knife to eat the rations right out of the can and he accidently cut his tongue off.. and he ran around screaming in agony and fear with blood spewing out of his mouth all over everyone and their lunch. That was my favorite part of it!
I wish I can find a photo of what chef boyardee rations cans looked like he was the largest ration supplyier to the U.S. and To our Alies,,he signed a contract with the army and navy to pack C and K food rations to the troops,,wish I can find a photo of what chef boyardee ration cans looked like,,
man FLPatrick i am actually eating a c ration while watching this it has crackers, cofee, sugar, cofee creamer, beans in tomato soup,3slices of ham, chocolate covered cookies they gave me 2 spoons some napkins and wonder why they gave me matches lol
I love seeing their faces!!! They're sooo happy!!! Even with a meal that we'd spit out for dinner these days, these guys take it like a feast. I bet those guys are very lucky to have chow like this, in comparison to Easy Company in Bastogne! :(
Those actually look better then the MRE's. I am a WWII reenactor and have wondered how they taste. Are they hard to come by or where can you get reproductions?.
I made some c-ration today.(baked beans in tomato sauce with SPAM). I can see why the army had a ration of 20 beans: 1 SPAM chunk. SPAM IS REVOLTING. C-ration didnt taste that bad though.
Terrific footage, thanks for putting it up. My first thought on seeing a closeup of the "meat and beans" can was: okay I see the beans, where's the meat?
What a Great Video!! Those were the Good Ole days when the United States was actually Loved and Appreciated by many many Countries!! GOD Bless the United States!!
this is amazing, best ww2 footage i've ever seen. it seems the cameraman had the foresight to run the filmspeed a lot faster than conventional speeds, making it look more "normal" paced than usual of the time period. he overshot it a little, making it slightly slow motion at times- was probably run somewhere near 35/40fps.
24fps for film is the standard for today, for those unfamiliar.
Very interesting piece. Color film was rare in the Italian Campaign, even among newsreel cameramen. Was this shot by Signal Corps personnel? It may have been shot by the 196th Signal Photo Company.

Interesting to see how a simple can of C-RAT pork and beans can replenish the morale of soldiers at war.
Great video.

why dont they heat them up? They not in combat it seems from footage, so no reason not too.
Strange US personell ate k, c, cold. British always tried to heat theirs. cold rations are bad for morale.

No. WW2 C-ration M-unit (Meat unit) came in 3 types initially - Meat and Veg Stew, Meat and Beans, and one other that I can't remember...
