  • Control of ropes is important when rappelling or climbing up and also is a height confidence test. RM's are not just marines, but commandos too.

The technique in which they climb the rope also allows them to handle a weapon while on the rope.

  • I cant wait till I'm 18 and I join the RMC!!! Can't fucking wait!!!

  • @EllisFitz1995 hey man im 15 and i want to become a marine officer. i just wanted to say that i think you should do the platoon leaders class which makes you an officer and you do this while in college freshman, softmore and junior year its alot better to this since youll be a higher rank and if anything goes wrong your a college graduate what happens if you dont make it and all you focused on is becoming a marine? i hope that doesnt happen and i hope you focus on plan A but you should wait a lil

  • this may look useless and silly, but its actually a genius bit of training. A lot of recruits are uncomfortable with heights, when you teach them how to have control on the ropes, it will give them confidence that they can handle themselves in high ropes.

  • I CAN'T WAIT TO JOIN THE RMC I LOVE IT

  • with a jump feet together arms downward..STRETCH!!!

  • Yaaay! I can do that exactly the same as them now! Apart from the fact my ropes not that good and I keep getting rope burns, but I still carry through!

  • I love to climb ropes...... IT'S FUN!!!!!!! Now I could live with that easyyyyyy lol!

  • Vin Desil reminds me, of the guy shouting.

  • the guy shouting reminds me of vin desil

  • marines do a lot of rope climbing due to being mountain troops a main job is cliff assaults. dont know if the paras climb ropes them do high assult course and stuff like that

  • do the para's have to do this?

  • you cant mentally toughen yourself, only physically..the makefast is a very easy move compared to just climbing up and down when your hanging out..thats the good part getting a breather doing makefast..wait until your on bottom field and youve gotta do it in full kit, thats when the fun really starts

  • Yeah but do you not need to develope a strong mind to be able to take the punishment therefore making your physical ability tougher?

    Just a thought

  • u should be self disciplined anyway..i trained like fuck b4 i went in and was 1 of the fittest in my troop....just get out there and do what u gotta do by yourself...and stay away from weight training, its no good..u need to be banging out pull ups, dips, press ups,sit ups and all different aspects of running like -sprinting,jogging,hill running, circuits and if u can get a bleep test and listen to it..ul be well in there...mental toughness does increase with time

  • Ok kl, yeah ive been staying away from resistance training. Just been doing a lot of intensive swimming and circuits, gona get running soon though just building up the strength in em first.

Got a medical resit tommoro so i hope i pass, failed last time due to a shinsplint, total bastard that was haha

    Cheers for the advice

    Dynamicz

  • good luck mate...but u seriuosly need to get them shins used to a pounding, run on grass 4 a while and build up to roads, try and stay away from flat roads tho unless ur running at 70-80% and not jogging...but thats if u wanna get super fit..that way u get more respect off the training teams, especially staff

  • Failed the fuckin Medical again cos of a Neuma Thorax, so my career in the RM's is hangin by a thread now - am well pissed off cos if i dont make it i dont know what im gona do, its either the RM's or no job tbh

    cheers for the advice

  • i dont see how its possible to balance yourself and keep yourself attached to the rope with only your legs.

  • Can anyone offer rope climbing tips for an RMR phase 1?

  • I'm in RT at the moment and the best advice is don't rush it, take your time at first and really bring your knees up to your chest, squeeze really really tight with your knees and feet, so you use your arms as little as possible, i had trouble at first and i got really really bad tendinitis, which messed me up with other aspects of training, because i used my arms to much, remember it's all about using your legs! gd luck mate.

  • LOL that guy talks funny

  • just 2 let you know (ImakeYouRoflToDeath) you dont have 2 have a strong upper body 2 do rope climbing!! its all technique!! trust me on that i know! and this vid proves it because you grip with your knees n hold most your wight with them!

  • looks hard

  • If your scared of heights would this be a issue when doing rope climbing or is it easy to overcome?

  • fear of hights is a mental issue, and the RM is all about overcoming your fears by obtaining a calm and focused State of Mind. so if you want to join the RM you should get rid of your fear of hights as it would stop you from showing your true potential.

  • If you're scared of heights I wouldn't reccomend the RM. There is the tarzan and high ropes course which is a bummer even for those who have no fear of heights.

  • What about regular infantry? would it be a problem for that? I heard its easyier to get in that because they dont demand as much from you.

  • Well, that's beside the point. The Infantry demand alot from you, maybe it's not so selective as the RM but nothing is an easy ride, the Infantry is also very hard and a great acheivmant. you're talking about heights, if you can't climb a rope you're not cut out to be a soldier.

  • I guess, but being a soldier is ALL i want to do, and fortuanly i have a great determination and drive so that alone will hopefully push me to pass these challenges, and from what i understand thats what the military is all about.

I wont be applying for any role for atleast 7 months (want to join in around a year and 3 months) so hopefully i can metally toughen myself by then.

  • its very hard - but if you practice, you would never need to use that pausing technique here. a strong grip and a strong back are required. if you weigh >190lbs you should be able to pull yourself up without the aid of your legs [providing you train obv]

  • IS rope climbing hard? I know I can do the rest of it, but I'm unsure about the ropes.

  • rope climbing requires a very strong upper body, so if you have that then it shouldnt be too much of a problem.

  • its like aerial drill isnt it?

  • all u people chattin shit, u dnt have a right to have an opinion untill you have done 32 weeks at CTCRM! untill then...shhh

  • you still do do the ropes outside you have to pass out the gym first! and thats when it gets hard.goldendragon you dont have a clue mate thats not all the rope training you do thats just 1 thing called a make fast (confidence test), the whole rope training is hard as.

  • ur the biggest cunt goin arent you goldendragon ye fuckin tit.

i would love to meet u in real life yano, id smash ur fuckin head in mate no questions asked.

    id kill u

  • more girly ballet training...

  • seems like you know what ballet is all about seeing as its all you talk about

  • no thanks, no ballet training for me, im watching these marines train

  • I use to climb two ropes at the same time till my arms were split like a T. No help from my legs. Ex-Army Ranger.

  • Ah yes because in a batlle thats always useful...

  • Yes, in the land of the free, the home of the brave, with the rockets red glare, we want to make ourselves the biggest target possible in order to receive the highest possible honors. Thank-you.

  • well fast roping from a hellicopter comes to mind when deploying troops. like he says, also builds confidence.

  • thats y u climb 1 rope with ur legs

  • What a difference 50 years makes. We did this same training outdoors. With the cold wind gusting up from the Exe. We had to do all of the rope work outdoors,on the Tarzan course, in battle dress and boots. One extra " stunt " they added, was at the end of the climb, we had to slide down the rope headfirst! This was a thrill, if you didn't have a firm grip with your boots. Usually ending up with a face full of mud at the bottom :-)

    Great days

    Dave Miller ex RM17516

  • I can honestly say... Nothing's changed :D
