I know that most people consider this to be a message to a girlfriend, like "we have put so much into this, you can't give in now." Which I think the song/video may very well be about.

But I think that the song could also be a song or a message to himself. Telling himself that he can't withdraw into a mindless world of drugs and he has to stand up and be a man.
