Truly awesome tech... especially that it was commisioned 61-62? It's not actually a killing machine, it's a spy plane. Perhaps US foreign policy over the years could've been better... but then again just how do you deal with the likes of the old soviet command? Either way, in terms of aviation the SR71 is a thing of beauty. It must've been amazing to fly.
A beauiful, majestic machine...truly impressive. I just wonder if we had invested the same amt of money feeding third world countries and curing thier ill as we spent mfg this killing machine might we have won its intended victims as our friends? I'm not a "bleeing heart liberal"....just sayin'. For sure we are officially now a country of avarice, lust and lies when we could have been, should have been so, so much more. Too late now.
We spend billions every year on foreign aid, and have been for a very long time now. And this was a spy plane, not a "killing machine". Maybe you should do some fact checking, before you make statements that have no factual basis.
@botsysguy Yes we give money to foreign aid. But tT\He point is still that the money spent on this plane would have been better spent feeding the poor and healing the sick and educating children. Whether or not this was a spy plane is of little import...the end result the same...killing when our end game should be about living, educating and befriending no conquest
Engineering excellence, the fastest plane ever with a breathable atmosphere in the cockpit. The only aircraft in the world that can run on full afterburners until it needs to refuel, never suffered a loss to the enemy, set 4 world records on its last flight flew at Mach 1.5 on its first. Flew for 18 years without losing an aircraft, longer than any other military aircraft. They survived around 4000 interception attempts and helped prevent a nuclear war. Kelly Johnson you have my respect.
@bmailand also the pilots used to heat sandwiches on the windows while they were in flight! There is one at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS if anyone ever wants to see one in person.
One of the jets i'll ever remember this plane is one of some things that changed the world that let me belive every thing is possible. Lockheed SR71 Blackbird flies on Mach 3 and this from more than 40 years my regards to the engeneers!
Why did they retire it? This plane is beyond beautiful. I don't think there's a woman on earth more stunning, elegant, or graceful. This plane is engineering art.
Its retirement signals the end of a golden age of engineering.
The f22 will probably not reach more than mach 2.4 because of the fixed intakes and structual limitations. In order to reach mach 3 you have yo have very advanced intakes and engine design plus a skin tolerant of the extreme heat at that speed,
The fastest aircraft still in service is the mig 25, with a top speed of mach 3.2, but this speed is in fact almost never reached due to the hazard of overspeeding the engines.
So incredible knowingly the Blackbird has been retired since 1998 she still holds the record for the fastest plane ever built, if im not mistaken the fastest plane NOW ther then the Blackbird is the F-22 raptor with a speed of around Mach 2, still is an AMAZING speed.
the lockhead is the u2 it is made by the same people but you are way of and also that's definitely not the fastest plane in the world!!!! before you post a vid get your facts right
@MetroActiveTV The SR-71 is still the fastest air-breathing plane ever made, by a wide margin. And it first flew in 1962. It is the baddest-ass plane ever made, bar none. All others are second rate. Interestingly, the F-22 has more powerful engines and is much lighter, but since it cannot withstand the heat generated by Mach 3.2 speeds, it must be artificially limited to a much lower top speed. And it burns 200 gallons a minute of fuel on full afterburner...
Its so amazing.... ive seen one before in real life. its really big but I think its one of the best things technology has ever made...... really nice plane!
it's not the world's fastest plane it's the fastest jet it can make 3500km/h the fastest plane is bell-15 it's rocked propelled and it can make 7500km/h
@HeildemKrieg Mig31 has max speed of about 3100km/h while Mig25 has max speed of 3500km/h...so difference is not too big but yeah, in global Mig25 is faster aircraft than Mig31.
actually the fastest jet in the world is the F-22 and has the ability to reach +5 mach but it doesn't have life support systems to keep the pilot alive.
What's awesome about this plane is that it fly's at 40,000 ft and has never been shot down. It has only crashed because of part or landing and take off failures.

the fastest plane in the world as of 2010 is the Lockheed SR-71 aka the Blackbird. Other than these planes there also exist the MiG fighter planes which have the ability of flying at a speed of Mach 2+. Similarly, even the Tupolev Tu-114, a propeller-driven aircraft, deserves a special mention among the fastest planes in the world. It finally retired from service in 1988, but none of the aircraft which succeeded it were able to push it off the number 1 spot for the fastest planes in the world.
@f39eagle2 As far as the USAF goes, you're right, it is retired. But NASA still has and uses 2 blackbirds today. Or so I heard on a military channel show last week..LOL
@f39eagle2 why dont they use it anymore? isnt it still like one of the best aircrafts in the world? or are there other aircrafts that give better information?
@Shift4chizzle Because they cost too much money for their operations. They were always needing to be refueled in mid-flight and such. Besides, our satellites do all the spying for us now without risking a human life. NASA owns two which are still operational. The remaining others have been gutted and the bodies put out on display in several museums. I'm not far from the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center and they have one in the main lobby. Beautiful aircraft to see up close.
@DrunkenRuckus It was retired for political reasons. The airforce hated it from day 1. Cut into their budget. Satellites csnnot do the same thing as their path is predictable. UAVs are used now and probably do reasonable job of real time ondemand info. The airforce was successfull in getting the tooling destroyed in 1970 thus sealing its fate eventually.
@DrunkenRuckus they could have always made them out of nickel-chromium (same as that found on the MiG-25 and MiG-31), which was highly resistance from heat expansion and costed at least 1/2 off pure titanium. They should have used Titanium on the leading edges and around crucial components of the aircraft instead of the whole body. this just proves that the USA at the time had primitive methods in material development, which is a shame because if they made it out of the stated material (cont').
@jonathan4178 The Raptor cannot come close to Mach 3.2 in top speed. No one really knows how fast the plane can fly, but its top speed is limited by temperature and the intake nozzles of the engines. SR-71 was retired in 1998. 32 built. 12 lost in accidents. One pilot died. It has been replaced by something very advanced. I touched the belly of the plane while it was on display in Texas. The liquid in the pictures on the aircraft is fuel leaking out. When the SR-71 gets up to speed the heat seals the leaks. At landing the canopy temperature was 572 degrees. @mominagha The only crew member killed flying the SR-71 was Jim Zwayer. If anyone else died we will never know and they will be honored with a black star on a wall.
@Shift4chizzle The iPhone5 is a secret. The largest spy satellite in the world flying over our heads right now is a secret. The stealth helicopter is a secret. Stealth coating is a secret. Our spies in other countries is a secret. The U.S. will be 20 trillion dollars in debt in the future and this is o.k. with the U.S. government is a secret. The internet was a secret. It is the little details you will never know about that is the true secret. The fact is we have something at a strategic level.
@skyvilla the iphone 5 is not a secret cos they put it on their website, what the new features will be are a secret but not secret as in government secret. the internet was a secret in WW2 but then they publicized it making it public and declassified=not secret. the stealth helicopter is not a secret cos we all know about it. the true secret is where it is and its missions. our spies are also not secret, the missions and where they are, is the secret. aurora was meant to be….continue
@skyvilla aurora was meant to be classified project, that no one knows about (only the people briefed or on the project would know obviously) but it wasnt meant to be known for the public. btw US is already in huge debt i think in the trillions. so is UK and a lot of other countries.
This plane on it's last flights, flew from west coast to east coast (which is around 3100 miles)
in a record 68 minutes. So, the 2200mph is wrong. I say it is faster than that speed.
Plus, it had to be refueled twice.
What do you think?
When man puts his mine to something, it can be achieve.
