Michelle ain't Mezzo Soprano, Mezzo Soprano can't hit head notes without blow tics or falseto, also a Mezzo Soprano when singing change its chest voice (Beyoncé is an example), she is actually Dramatic Soprano

i HIGHLY DOUBT SHE IS A SOPRANO. though her voice is very high-pitched... she is best in her lower register/upper chest register. her voice has some resemblance to dramatic mezzos such as patti labelle/fantasia. they too have extensive ranges! :D

i agree she is a classical soprano but in pop singing, she is defnitely a mezzo. before DC, she was in a gospel quartet with her best friends back then called 'united harmony' she was singing soprano back then. but in DC, she sang alto. her head voice is a bit unrefined probably coz she doesnt use it often. thats why i highly believe she is a mezzo in pop/R&B singing. :)

Her most natural and comfortable range is Alto. In a choir, she would be placed as an Alto....She would not be able to keep up with the Sopranos.

@richardba Michelle is a Mezzo. It's not just about range but tessitura - where the voice lies most comfortably and where it's most resonant. Michelle's upper range belts Bb4-G5 are where she is most resonant and non-suprisingly where we hear her sing most. She rarely uses her head voice to sing - though she should more as it is good.

Also one most listen to her timbre as it ascends the chest range and how it thins out...

@richardba She is certainly not "Dramatic" anything because he timbre is simply too light. If you want to hear a REAL Dramatic Soprano then type in Jessye Norman. I would say Michelle is a Mezzo-Soprano because of where her tessitura lies and the timbre of her voice. Beyonce has a similar range and yet has displayed much more control and agility in all parts of her range. Does that make her a dramatic soprano?

@JonathanGardnerTV Beyoncé hasn't displayed agility, Michelle I've seen, both studio and live, harmonizing and backsinging or leading, Michelle's voice is often dark and heavy (e.g.: Jennifer Hudson, yet her voice is larger, stronger and more powerful), also Michele belts are within G5 and lying down with Bb4, while Mezzo sopranos lies within A2 up to C middle, she is definitely a soprano, I don't know her comfort zone though, but eventually she will prove what is her voice type

@richardba I am a big fan of Michelle but her tone and timbre really can not be described as Dramatic. It's rather light whereas JHud's is heavy and dark. Michelle can somewhat "imitate" a darker, heavier sound around Bb4-D5 but she can't sustain that any higher.

By agile, I meant, Bey has demonstrated ease and great connection through all her registers. Her technique is impeccable and thus she can create flourishing and complex melismas in most of her range

@shooney56 Beyonce wasn't big before Destiny's Child were. She sabotaged her other bandmates by kicking them out of the band, you know, Letoya and Latavia. She forced the other members of DC to lip sync in the background whilst she sung live. Her career was more or less set up for her. Now, if she has given Letoya and Kelly equal singing parts to her (didn't say Latavia because no ones heard her solo) when DC first started Beyonce might be in trouble now.

In addition to that, she came up with most of the harmonies herself and those harmonies were the core of what made DC unique to all of the other groups. And quite frankly, she was willing to put in all of the effort and work to get where she is. The other girls can easily do the same.

IKR!!! her tone is probably the most unique tone not JUST OF DC BUT PROBABLY OF THE 2000s!!! imo, she is the BEST SINGER IN DC because she manages to use her raspy tone(which isnt very pleasing to the ears initially) to her advantage. and she also knows how to balance power VS resonance and also have the ability to sing both light/angelic as well! :D
