Before the 80s, wrestling (especially in the south) was depicted more realistically. It looked more like MMA. It was a closely guarded secret that it was fake. State athletic commissions were kept out of the loop. WWE has always been the cartoonish, show-biz company, so it's mostly their fault it's been exposed. The internet didn't help.
