I drink and I want to say goodbye...and then Tom sings again, and I realize he has seen something I can perhaps live with. A circus-beautiful, 1920es reality that is as timeless as time, and as indestuctible and current as anything out there now.
Wonderful song, and some nice photos, thanks for posting. I also like the Holly Cole version, and think her album is one of the best Waits-tributes, with a number of excellent interpretations. But this is uniquely beautiful in his unique way. "All dressed up in spring's new clothes ..."
Happy to hear the original, which cannot be matched -- but I came upon it by way of Holly Cole, whose cover with the lush accompaniment of The Canadian Brass is faithfully melancholy. Give it a try, on her album of Tom Waits covers called "Temptation."
OK, honestly... this slays me. There is something about his voice that just rips my heart open. This is so soul-searchingly hauntingly beautiful. It brings tears to my eyes.
So pleased to see the original of this. Waits' voice has a peculiarly beautiful quality to it that fits his music so well. It is distinctive and unmistakable.
Great! Great! Great!

He's got a bit of vaudeville and he's got a bit of soul. Too bad we all think it is just a bit of rock and roll.

@hpaulmoon I like her version of the briar and the rose, but its the only song worth listening to on that album in my opinion

I believe you
I love his music just that much, too.
It makes me happy when I'm sad, picks me up when I feel low.
If you feel isolated, I think he is someone you can relate to---his songs are very human, very tender.
Glad you didn't use that rope!
And glad you shared your story.
