You talk about the horse running a program, do you just let them burn it out then make it on your terms? How would that abort the initiation of the next trigger of the rearing program? I ask because I have a mare who refuses to go forward, before she came to me they cropped and spurred her - now she melts down if anyone has a whip while I am in saddle. Even with out the whip she will randomly stop, balk, shake her head, back and then go forward. Is there anyway to help her reprogram?
well you are the first rider on youtube who had been on a rearing horse and gave them their head!!! i cant even begin to tell you how many people pull back which results in a flip over. however what i would do differently is...i wouldnt let him get away with rearing, i wouldnt let him think im just gonna let him do it. when he reared id kick him up and keep his feet moving, otherwise hes gonna think he can rear every time you get on him. but i do things the Ray Hunt way.
"The horse broke into a sweat". That's no biggy - he was getting himself worked up. My 17 year old connemara pony sweats a lot when I ask him to do something he doesn't want to do (like move or bend to the right properly :P). Why people would get annoyed by that I honestly don't know...
Anyway, I'd love to be able to stick on like you did! (I usually get bucked with, or he spooks and tanks off across the sand school with me, before realising that he's using energy :P)
Ha ha, I'm an NH guru and I grew up with and train racehorses. 3rd generation in fact. I do wonder why no ground work first, but... also understand eventually you do have to ride it out. Oh and NH is ALL about working the horse. Long rides and wet saddleblankets is the mantra, not kissypoo please be a nice horsy. Maybe you should check it out, ya never know you might find some techniques you like. I was literally dragged to a clinic, and it changed a lot of my previous methods.
Great job staying on through that! However, I can't help but wonder why this horse is rearing like that. He's obviously trying to tell you that somethings wrong.
Treating the symptom (rearing), won't get far unless you diagnose the actual problem.
@ExclusiveEquine I totally agree with you. A pity he does not explain in the beginning WHY this horse has a problem. Treating the symptom is not as effective as treating the problem thas lies behind. I hope the horse does have serious back-problems or something. Great riding, though, amazing how he stays on!
@stellabeumer I think "problem" was it's a young racehorse full of beans. Just needed a little discipline and to learn he'll get to stretch his legs... when the rider allows it.
@ExclusiveEquine his problem is he doesnt want to be ridden. and to the guy who made the video, how old is the horse and how many rides has he had before this video was taken?
I've ridden more than my fair share of nasty rearers, and was suitably impressed to see this video. Love the method (likely more effective in the long term than many others), and man, I wish my seat was that good.
My favorite part about watching your videos is not the content (although I do enjoy your methods), but the shmucks who post a comment full of total CRAP and get upset when you out-common-sense them.
I've ridden a few problem horses myself...but I ride with short stirrups for buckers and spinners, usual length for the generally stroppy ones and no-stirrups for rearers...usually cause they are the ones who use people as landing pads..lol! Why do you rides rearers with such long stirrups??? I've just not come across it before..
@endospink thought no stirrups was my thing. guess not. now to the comment about the horse trying to tell you somthing. yea he was telling you get off my back. thats why he reared. you stayed on he gave up. it didn't work for him problem solved. nice job. impresive riding.
you could always sell the horse to a circus; they would love him with all that nonstop rearing! my sister in her younger days was fearless with cranky horses, once, when she was riding a rearer; she smacked him between the ears with a short crop with slapper end which made a sharp slapping sound, so every time he attempted to rear, she popped him right between the ears, and after a few rears, he never did it again. didnt hurt him, didnt terrify him, just got his attention right smartly.
i notice how you say you didnt bring him down b/c of the gravel. now had it been in an area with soft footing, would you have? i dont see how you'd be able to do that without hurting yourself.
AMEN! the stupid egg 'trick' is hogwash and we all know you're an AWESOME horseman... and I agree with your N.H. spoof where you're on the phone with "Pat" and the final answer is... "At some point people have to get ON their horses!" AMEN!!
If he rears so much, why dont you use the method - "when he rears, crack and egg flat on the poll of his head" he will think he hit his head and come down thinking he is bleeding. It works usually al lthe time. Do it over and over and you might just break his habit of rears instead of sitting there and doing nothing.
That`s not a method, it a load of hogwash that`s been passed alone for years to the naive. Horses have`nt got the brain capacity to associate blood as something to be feared so it would be a complete waste of time.
So Casper - did you watch the video to the end? The rearing does stop from the rider doing nothing because the horse achieves absolutely nothing from rearing, which means there's no point in continuing the habit. Just common sense really - as opposed to your "egg method"....
I see from this video why my riding instructors referred to rearing as a lack of forward impulsion. He was really backing up a lot. Bet youre glad he diddnt come down on that septic tank lid :)
It looks like he has gotten rewarded for rearing by having his rider get (thrown) off. When that doesnt work, what's the point? U still have a ways to go with him. Hope it goes safely.
unfortunitely very few people on earth could stay on for that !wow! i believe that it does teach the horse they've won when theyfall off in that kinda situation which would explain why this guy is a professional
Nice job here, and you also have an extremely helpful website too. I appreciate the information and have accessed it several times for training information. I work with a few off-the-track TBs. The TBs have always held a special place in my heart.
Great job staying on. So all you need to do is to Let them know whos boss by letting them rear to get it out of there system, then when they have finished and want to walk on. Dont let them untill they are ready. Im going to give this a try, i have a mare who does this alot and i have had her checked over and she is in perfect health. I think its just misbehaviour. usually i have to sit and bare it then carry on afterwoulds. Well dont staying on, Rearing horses are dangorous. Very well done!. xx
Ah a Thoroughbred stallion with love on his mind and not in the mood for work. I love Thoroughbreds, they are all heart but they are bad about rearing. My hunter mare can give that stallion a run for his money any day in the rearing department. She is 11 and perfect in every way except cold weather when she stand up and wave her front legs just like your Black Beauty there.
I have broken many problem, young and also wild horses in my life and I agree that the mustangs can really buck. However, I have encountered a few warmbloods that buck like air jordan. They are so powerfully built and rearing and bucking is there thing. Two years ago I ended up with a broken tiba and fibia. The horse was rehabed from a retired hunter with a bucking problem to a sucessful amature dressage horse, but he was a challange and a half!
It looked like this horse reared when he saw something spooky? Since I value my bones and rearing is very dangerous, I would have worked de-sensisizing this horse on the ground first - just my version. Also I suspect that you will have rearing episodes when he faces a new environment. That said, good job staying on, boy was that horse mad you didn't come off!
At least he doesn't buck!!! I've got a crazy 6 year old arab who rears up at "scary" objects, but he's never reared over and over like that and certainly never that high, but what I do is as soon as his feet touch the ground I make him turn circles. It gets him out of it really quick and helps him focus better and overcome his fear. Of course, your horse would just fall over if you tried to do that, so kudos for hanging in there!!!!
He's gotten to attached to the pony. He's only trying to get control so he can get to his friend. The only way is to split them up either from the paddock or stop showing them together.
i wish you lived in england, my horse is a rearer. she used to rear at the race track and since i bought her she rears in the school, but she goesa bit further than yours she goes over backwards each time so the only option is to exit quick. and help or advice greatfully recived. i think your riding ability is ace
Yep, get a trainer and vet out because horses don't flip for fun, there is a problem there that needs to be addressed. You might be quick enough to dismount in time but you only have to mis-judge once and you could end up in a wheelchair. Be careful.
Thats beautiful, poetry in motion. Some of your ideas and techniques remind me a lot of an old Aussie bloke Tom Roberts. He's dead now but he has some books still kicking around. His greatest accolade was to be a thinking horseman. I think I am thinking. lol
I like riding problem horses with just bareback pads, I think it leaves less to get tangled in, in the even of a real mishap. I feel safer. Not to mention there is a great deal more contact with your seat and legs.
Anybody who thinks that jumping off a horse and beating it for something like this is extremely narrow minded. The best form of training is through understanding and applying basic horse psychology and it doesn't get any better than what this video is showing to us. Excellent job.
OH LOOK the horse got to stop which is exactly what he wanted... to not leave the barn. I would never get on a baby, green horse, problem horse, or even my wonderful show horse IN the barn and walk to the arena unless it was a 1/4 mile hike. and then guess what?! we would never have a barn sour horse on our hands. and I didn't have to get mad, or beat him, or grab neck. Then when I do need to ride from the barn and into the show arena, it's not even in his/her head to rear.. :)
When you train horses for other people (like Paul does) you gotta train them to do what your customers want to do with them, otherwise you're outta the job. This is a racehorse and he has to be ridden like all the other racehorses - going to and from the barn -like in this video, otherwise he's dog meat, simple as that. Besides, the horse wasn't barn sour, he's a stallion wanting to make out with the mares in the near by walking machine and preferably get rid of his rider first..lol - no chance!
Obviously you train only your horse. Again as the other guy said, when you ride for a client, you need the horse to be right for THEM, not you. So, you ride through it and move on. I have had the joy of riding an Andalusian stallion for a client that another trainer f'd up by creating a rearing habit. You must ride through it...the owner had to chase him forward with a longe whip - he reared up 15 times my first ride, but we got him to be completely safe for her to ride again.
that was ridiculous after he Reared for the 3 time i would have taken a crop and beat him over the head till he stops.. it is a consequence for rearing and it doenst hurt the horse!!!
that my ignorant friend would not have helped at all (unless you want to make your horse spooky and headshy) in fact it probably would land your butt in the dirt were it obviously belongs, since you seem to be so imcompetant about how to train a horse
and what do you mean it DOESN'T hurt??? your beating the horse over the head with a crop??? have you ever been hit with one before??
great video showing how to stay calm during this incident and a way to correct it. my only concern was mounting indoors with a known rearer. that scared me. otherwise, nice video.
my horse reard up nd fell on me cuz he didnt want to go forward this is wat i did nd it worked ok ppl wo dnt have horses u wnt understand but this person will get a good 1 1/2 inch long spers nd jab him with them to make him go if he still does it keep da spers nd get a crop nd when u feel him start acten like a butt hit him in tha but u kno nd if he goes up hit his head with it nd he will learn i did it nd it works nd a lil beating wont hurt huim cuz this can be dangerous
hmm, lets see if Obama can do a better job with education over there because reading this tells me 8yrs of Bush is taking it's toll on America's youth.
LOL. I don't think it was Bush's doing, and in my honest opinion- I think Mr. Obama has already lost our country for us, or is WELL on his way with his brigade he has brought in.
(I know what you mean about the above commenter though. ;) That's the new America for you, for sure.)
LOVE this video.. I have watched it over and over again. I absolutely admire your riding skills.
I really liked your quiet consistent approach to the rearing. I think you did a fab job. The only thing I would comment on was your use of the word 'biatch'. It doesn't make you look as professional as you obviously seem to be. :-)
Hi endo, hope you don't mind me testing writing a comment here. I answer people on my videos and my comments are not posted. Just checking to see if it is when I write on someone elses. Anyone know why this would be? I have all these rediculous comments that I want to answer and can't? Regards to all. Oh, had a client in Ireland fix a real screwed Horse the other day with your Tap/ Regards
very nice job!! maybe you can tell me how to stop my morab gelding from...well its really hard to explane.when i try to walk him he will always turn and go towards my other horse jewel. he also bucks and spins. please help!!!
Hi - your a very competent rider, the horse was going up pretty vertical at times, but you did have the knack of getting your arms/hands under the neck to keep from sliding off. Have you had a horse go back over on you before?
WOW amazing how you got him to calm down....I'd be terrified if a horse was rearing like that with me...luckily I've never had it happen tho...well that bad at least. My mare was acting silly and refused to leave the barn area...started to back up and then I felt her rear only a lil bit...but I sat deep in the saddle and made her walk forword. With horses you need a lot of patience!
Excellent riding. Most people would not think to use a technique like that but just get frustrated and wang the bugger on the head. Love the way you handled him without using pain as so many trainers do. Good job. Noticing the comment on NH at the end; I agree with you completely. They're far too sensitive. The nicely nicely approach does not always work. It depends on the horse.
so do i i have just been rollocted for commeting on a rearing bucking horse. i sed the man did a good job sitting the horse he gave no mouth pressure or anythin then once the horse had finished he got it going forwards. and some girl who had a picture of her riding with no saddle or bridle called me immature and swore alot lol. some people just cant bear others views
Read through some of the comments, lol! All the haters probably wouldn't have stayed on the first 5 seconds of that tantrum. Which brings me to a question, do you EVER come off? I have a pretty good seat, but I'm also pretty sure I would have come off of that...the thing was vertical! And I for one got a great kick out of your commentary. Great job, as always.
lol, don't N/H trainers make their horses run round and round and round in a little circle un til they "join-up" usually dripping with sweat, re-name a whip "the carrot stick" just by painting it orange and charging an extra $40.00, then play a bunch of pointless "games" with odd aids that are hard to transfer to ridden cues leading to a very confused horse... Endo you are WAY better than any of them, I have been to many a N/H seminar and would never treat the horse the way they do

Just a bit of curiosity here,
Have you ever tried with one of these outlaws to just go back to square one and retrain them?
What a shame to let them get that out of hand at all.
Still this confrontation thing is apt to get you hurt at some point.
If you get hurt or the horse gets hurt it's all for nothing.

The horse was rehabed from a retired hunter with a bucking problem to a sucessful amature dressage horse, but he was a challange and a half!
thyri43 2 years ago
It looked like this horse reared when he saw something spooky? Since I value my bones and rearing is very dangerous, I would have worked de-sensisizing this horse on the ground first - just my version. Also I suspect that you will have rearing episodes when he faces a new environment. That said, good job staying on, boy was that horse mad you didn't come off!
thyri43 2 years ago
I don't think he had spooky on his mind, there were fillies on the walking machine in front of him..

Great technique! He is lucky he found you.
Tones4me 2 years ago
At least he doesn't buck!!! I've got a crazy 6 year old arab who rears up at "scary" objects, but he's never reared over and over like that and certainly never that high, but what I do is as soon as his feet touch the ground I make him turn circles. It gets him out of it really quick and helps him focus better and overcome his fear. Of course, your horse would just fall over if you tried to do that, so kudos for hanging in there!!!!

hey
i have a 16hh thoroughbred who is really well behaved
however at our local show ground he rears uncontrollable when (who he shares his feild with) a pony is taken into the ring to compete.
We are trying to get him out of the habbit and it is only at this one place he rears . . do you have any advice to calm him down?
sk3lt0n 2 years ago
He's gotten to attached to the pony. He's only trying to get control so he can get to his friend. The only way is to split them up either from the paddock or stop showing them together.
endospink 2 years ago
Honestly, i'd much rather deal with a rearer than a bucker.

i wish you lived in england, my horse is a rearer. she used to rear at the race track and since i bought her she rears in the school, but she goesa bit further than yours she goes over backwards each time so the only option is to exit quick. and help or advice greatfully recived. i think your riding ability is ace
mallybooboxall 2 years ago
if he flipped you would just get smashed, as trainers we have a responsibility to teach others ways not to get hurt or killed.
scoohey 2 years ago
Yep, get a trainer and vet out because horses don't flip for fun, there is a problem there that needs to be addressed. You might be quick enough to dismount in time but you only have to mis-judge once and you could end up in a wheelchair. Be careful.
endospink 2 years ago
Thats beautiful, poetry in motion. Some of your ideas and techniques remind me a lot of an old Aussie bloke Tom Roberts. He's dead now but he has some books still kicking around. His greatest accolade was to be a thinking horseman. I think I am thinking. lol

Out of curiosity, why no saddle/stirrups? Is this a training technique, or just the way you ride?
captainkickapoo21 2 years ago
Just the way I ride...
endospink 2 years ago
I like riding problem horses with just bareback pads, I think it leaves less to get tangled in, in the even of a real mishap. I feel safer. Not to mention there is a great deal more contact with your seat and legs.
missjax2011 2 years ago
When a horse rears and falls on his back, is it on purpose or is it because he lost balance?
luiza2166 2 years ago
Rarely it is on purpose but it does happen. Most of the time it's because they lose balance.

DivinityKay 2 years ago
When you train horses for other people (like Paul does) you gotta train them to do what your customers want to do with them, otherwise you're outta the job. This is a racehorse and he has to be ridden like all the other racehorses - going to and from the barn -like in this video, otherwise he's dog meat, simple as that. Besides, the horse wasn't barn sour, he's a stallion wanting to make out with the mares in the near by walking machine and preferably get rid of his rider first..lol - no chance!
theKillDeaGame 2 years ago 3
Obviously you train only your horse. Again as the other guy said, when you ride for a client, you need the horse to be right for THEM, not you. So, you ride through it and move on. I have had the joy of riding an Andalusian stallion for a client that another trainer f'd up by creating a rearing habit. You must ride through it...the owner had to chase him forward with a longe whip - he reared up 15 times my first ride, but we got him to be completely safe for her to ride again.

perfectworld321 2 years ago
that was ridiculous after he Reared for the 3 time i would have taken a crop and beat him over the head till he stops.. it is a consequence for rearing and it doenst hurt the horse!!!
horselife458 2 years ago
that my ignorant friend would not have helped at all (unless you want to make your horse spooky and headshy) in fact it probably would land your butt in the dirt were it obviously belongs, since you seem to be so imcompetant about how to train a horse
and what do you mean it DOESN'T hurt??? your beating the horse over the head with a crop??? have you ever been hit with one before??
indiaismygirl 2 years ago 3
Hahaaa
Then you'll have a horse that rears AND is head-shy!

I really liked your quiet consistent approach to the rearing. I think you did a fab job. The only thing I would comment on was your use of the word 'biatch'. It doesn't make you look as professional as you obviously seem to be. :-)

sxclilcowgirl 3 years ago 2
Hi - your a very competent rider, the horse was going up pretty vertical at times, but you did have the knack of getting your arms/hands under the neck to keep from sliding off. Have you had a horse go back over on you before?
fantotangos 3 years ago
yep, a few..
endospink 3 years ago
WOW amazing how you got him to calm down....I'd be terrified if a horse was rearing like that with me...luckily I've never had it happen tho...well that bad at least. My mare was acting silly and refused to leave the barn area...started to back up and then I felt her rear only a lil bit...but I sat deep in the saddle and made her walk forword. With horses you need a lot of patience!
kotek420 3 years ago

nice job!! fuck all those other people! nice work with him!
msoifer1021 3 years ago
Excellent riding. Most people would not think to use a technique like that but just get frustrated and wang the bugger on the head. Love the way you handled him without using pain as so many trainers do. Good job. Noticing the comment on NH at the end; I agree with you completely. They're far too sensitive. The nicely nicely approach does not always work. It depends on the horse.
Sahrafarasha 3 years ago
so do i i have just been rollocted for commeting on a rearing bucking horse. i sed the man did a good job sitting the horse he gave no mouth pressure or anythin then once the horse had finished he got it going forwards. and some girl who had a picture of her riding with no saddle or bridle called me immature and swore alot lol. some people just cant bear others views
trickivicky 3 years ago
Read through some of the comments, lol! All the haters probably wouldn't have stayed on the first 5 seconds of that tantrum. Which brings me to a question, do you EVER come off? I have a pretty good seat, but I'm also pretty sure I would have come off of that...the thing was vertical! And I for one got a great kick out of your commentary. Great job, as always.
