  • i love you robert your lesson on licks are far more then basic lick lessons i learn concepts in the process witch help be write my own ideas and licks its awesome for my lick vocabulary

  • @ShekkyVD69

I already know that and it's irrelevant to what I was saying. I'm saying that he contradicts himself in the vid by saying those 2 things. B mixolydian is not the same as B minor or being in the key of B. E would be the proper key because B is the fifth which happens to be the mixolydian mode. Therefore, it's not in the key of B... Otherwise is would be the Ionian which you just proved it's not due to the flatted seventh.

  • @Aoimusha412 it's just a B7 with a mixolydian scale over it. that's it.

yes, this scale is the same as the E major scale but the notes are played over a B7 so it sounds mixolydian, and the key of E has nothing to do with it.

he started with the saying the key is B, more specific: B7. no contradiction, perhaps a bit confusing...

  • EL PADRINO !!

  • i like your licks . . .and thanks the tabs that you shared heheh ^_^ i practice it haha

  • reminds me of mambo italiano when playing this slow!

  • uhhhmm what kind of modes are you using

  • Mr. Rotren, you don't happen to remember the amp you were using for this vid do you? Sounds awesome!

  • Lol the intro to the video says it's in B mixolydian but then when the video starts you say it's in the key if B, so which is it??? I would guess that if it's over a B7 and in the mixolydian mode then it's actually in the key of E.

  • @Aoimusha412 Well the chord is a B7 so a mixolydian works over it because that chord has a dominant seven, and so does the mixolydian mode. You couldn't (well i guess you could) play an ionian (basic major) because that would mean the mode would contain a major 7 and those would conflict. ( :

  • lovely

  • had fun playin that lick!

  • well done!

  • perfect

  • Very nice, thank you for posting!

  • Very nicely done. Thanks for posting these!

  • great dominant 7th lick; thanks for writing it out. I'm a trumpet player and getting the added practice value of transposing it using functional harmony. Thanks for posting.

  • That's a pretty good lick Im trying hard to condition my pinky and right hand to follow the notes backwards as your example goes. But I do get the way it goes and you can apply this technique anywhere on the fret as it feels depending on the way a particular song goes. It's nice. You can also add more stuff to it following the pattern technique

  • long distance.... run arouuuuuuuuuuuuund.

just kidding, there is virtually no similarity

  • @BobMillahhh GOOD catch!!

(now i'm hearing starship trooper too)

  • Great tone....what guitar and amp setup are you using?

  • @fdemolished Exactly what I want to know, it sounds great..

  • thank you

  • grat lick and tone man, could you explain the theory behind the notes your playing though.. scales etc...

  • @daibird I was just doing this as a theory practice for myself so I might aswell put it here, hope it's right.

Starts with Gb minor arp - also 5-b7-9 of B7

Then there is the two intervals 3-1 and 9-b7 descend

Then, with a lot of chromaticism he goes through whole octave, with 5 and 3, but also b2 (probably would sound great over B7b9?) on the beat

    Ends on b7

This lick also works perfectly over a ii-V because of the Gb arp at the beginning (Gb being the ii)

  • nice tone

  • Very interesting.

  • This is the most awesome video lesson Ihave seen on uTube, THANK U SOOO MUCH!

  • nice, a bit Carlton

  • What guitar is that? Looks a lot like mine :D

  • perfect lesson! thank you very much. your jazz licks are awesome. more jazz please:)

  • Very good

  • THAT AMP IS ROCKTRON?

  • This is cool, thx for sharing!

  • It is a 5 Star lessons.

    Thank U!!

  • learned it on bass woot!

  • 1:03 Fell asleep.

  • I just figured out what Jazz is, SEVENTH CHORDS!

  • Another great lesson, Thanks

  • well if you moved it up a fret you would have to play it over c7

now learn go your theory ;)

  • No shit? Really? You mean that you can simply slide up one fret and it will play over a C tonic? You have an amazing grasp of the obvious.

    - Assistant to music theory professor, Indiana University. Major in classical piano, composition and arranging. 1998.

  • Oh, my mistake. I wasn't aware you had such an amazing grasp of sarcasm. I'm truly sorry if I have offended you or your ego, but surely you can see why I would make such a mistake. No?

Hah, and sorry for my last sentence in my last comment, it might make me seem like an idiot I suppose. Oh well....

  • The point of my original mean post is that, on the guitar, phrases are generally transposed without change to the fingering. Yeah, yeah, I could have just said that, but what's the fun in it? This thread has ended.

  • Hah, interesting source of fun.

  • @gingervitis lolz. Arrogant somewhat, but true.

  • @Wiseman501 ;-) just messin' with 'em. they get SO offended.

  • so your major is music theory huh, and your the ASSISTANT to someone semi important, I'll admit the lick is pretty vanilla and the explanation involves nothing relevant, but your still a douchebag, congrats.

  • Awesome Lick! Thanks for posting the tab too!

  • I agree with the positive feedbacks! I am ipressed by the fluidity of your soloing. Thank you for sharing your expertise :-)

  • wich means of course, you can play that lick over an F#m7 chord, wich sounds obviously quite different, because the lick would be minor sounding instead of Mixolydian (when it is playend over a B7, or a D#m7b5)

  • There are some different ways to "think" this lick : mine (who isn't the only one of course) is to see it at a simple F#m7 arpeggio , enhanced with some chromatics . This is a very common bop "trick", kinda reminiscent of Martino's approach.

  • This is a good lick, however, why dont you finish it in the A note, D string, 7th fret ?

That feels way more natural and easier than finishing on the A note, A string, 12nd fret....

    Regards from Brazil

    Marcel

  • What mode did you employ. I think this lick will also work with a F7 if you start with F, A, C triad. I'm immersing myself into jazz soloing on the bass. This is an excellent example.

  • its based on a B mixolydian shape, starting at the 5th (F#)

  • Thank you. You started your lick with F. What mode did you employ. I think this lick will also work with a F7 if you start with F, A, C triad. I'm immersing myself into jazz soloing on the bass. This is an excellent example.

  • Great video... I appreciate you posting the tab @ 0:22. Your fingers move so quickly it's a hard lick to follow but the tab allows me to absorb it at my own rate. You are an excellent teacher. Please keep 'em coming! Thanks again.

  • BAD ASS LICK BUDDY!!!!

  • Good teacher.

  • kjempestiling lick!! dette kan jo brukes til utrolig mye rart. Keep 'em coming mate!

  • Concordo

  • fucking hell this is so hard and frustrating I feel like killing myself.

  • Nah, don't do that, sport. Take it a small bit at a time, do it really slow with lots of repetitions. If you really want it you'll get it.

  • thank you! clear and accurate to a "t"!

  • cool thanks from germany

  • Nice lesson and nice lick, clearly explained. Thanks. I subbed!

  • hey everyone, stop bitching about his lessons, if you are that know-it-all about guitar, why don't you put your own lessons, morons?

i learned a lot with rotren videos

  • I have not deleted his comments - he deleted them himself (the author is the person who wrote the comment).

  • @gonzodab That may be true, but when you're talking blues B7 is in the key of B.

  • I like it and want to learn how to play it. Wtf? We should only watch your dumbass girl shake her stinky ass on youtube. It only takes a brain.

  • its a guitar lesson, why should it not be on youtube?

  • This is awesome thanks man!!

  • Good!

  • nice lesson man!

  • Nice Lesson, Good tone, I'm inspired. Thanks for posting/

  • not really lol.

  • I ate a red candle !

  • @guitdude09 Right on!

  • @guitdude09 ...did it help?....

  • @2littlelies hahaha man i'd forgotten about this comment. Thanks for reminding me, yes it did help :Q)

  • First ya get your needle then you substitute all the chords with M7th chords and m7th chords with a few diminished chords. You can convert any metal tune into something a little more jazzy...lol. Too bad you'll always be a one dimensional guitar player...not guitarist...guitar player.

  • Hi plectrum , I was waiting on your reply you did just as I thought you would .

  • You know Satin is the one that sets traps :)

  • f# minor acting as a five chord, the 1 chord being B7

  • great lick! sounds awesome!

    is that guitar a suhr?

  • mexican fender strat deluxe i think

  • Oh my gosh, Tone much

  • Minorizing the dominant... always a fun concept!

  • what do you mean??

  • Some weeeeird music theory stuff ;-)

  • you take the the dominant, or five, chord of a major diatonic chord scale and flat the 3rd in that specific tonal triad, transforming it from major to minor... duh

  • He's talking about the 3rd of the chord. Going back and forth from the major to the minor 3rd with a dominant 7 chord. For example Funk #49 by James Gang.

  • the chorus of "the killing moon" by Echo & the bunnymen has a nice I - v.

  • Love the lick and the tablature helped me learn it before the video ended. Good lesson. Thanx!

  • gracias desde argentina !!!" danielfilas

  • Great Lick, thanks for sharing!

  • nice line :)

  • Great lick... I am woodshedding it now

  • i like the lick and the way you play it - i'll be sure to learn this - thanks. But I think you dont do the rockabilly groove thing right way :) (no offense)

  • cookingwithgoats, you learn 1,4,5 basic rock then you move on if you have the ability. Its not about cd sales. Jazz is personal achievement and knowledge. Why don't you post some of your favorite bands and enlighten us .

  • seriously cnotes, I can use 3 of the lessons I picked up tonight from rotrens videos this weekend. I play country rock, classic rock and funk. All rotrens stuff is applicable to all styles.

  • Comment removed

  • cnotes, listen to some classic rock albums by yes,(steve howe). Some jazz infuence there. Check one ofthe live cuts on the ZZ Top album they did in Texas a long time ago.

  • Wow, you're an idiot.

  • why bother teaching someone to respect an art form? He does not want to learn, he's happy with his pop music. let him find happiness in cd sales that translates to music to him. Quality Music translates to good music to us.

  • Comment removed

  • You can look at any form of guitar playing as an "out do event". But that is subjective; it depends on *your* perspective, or insecurities about your playing. I would be careful about making a blanket statement about any style of music verses another, that is the height of ignorance. Jazz is art of expression interpretation and borrowing and exchange of ideas that are shared.

  • Comment removed

  • Shut the fuck up you illiterate. Go rot in your trailer with your dead end musical aspirations.

  • If you could play guitar half as good as I can , your head would be the size of a water tower .Your a true moron .

  • "You're a true moron" not "Your". Your is possessive. You want the contraction You're = You are. Evidently You Are the moron. So take your two cent English speaking and your bragging and shove it up your illiterate ass ok? Jazz is a higher art than anything you will ever experience in your life.

  • Comment removed

  • "its an out do event"

Is this even English? I mean really, if you want to comment on music and art at least make yourself understandable.

  • Comment removed

  • you wanna say music like slayer and death metal are for fools? All I can say, that's not true boy.

  • Comment removed

  • The word of god. don't make me laugh. I am a katholic myself. I like bands like slayer for the love of the music. The thought behind it I leave to dumb guys like you.

  • 1. I cannot spell Catholicism because i am dutch. You try to speak my language see if you do it correct.

    2. I havn't evolved yet to know what music is? How come your fast conclusions?? I study music (guitar) on the conservatory. I don't know what you mean by that?

  • thanks

  • Your most welcome .

  • Metal is not fueled by satan. Metal is fueled by pure energy derived from speed, volume and raw, uncarved sounds.

Some energy gets misused by retards and that's when lame spirits are evoked and puppies get killed in the proces. That, my Christian friend, is just as lame as Jehovas on my doorstep on sunday morning! But at least I didn't base my opinion on what my preacher or community tells me to think! Think for yourself! Jugde not, lest ye be jugded yourselves. Amen.

  • Your close my friend but not right , pure and and without confusion , as it is written God is not the author of confusion .

  • My point exactly: Say what you wanna say. Don't repeat your preacher! You sound like you just went to church and came out all brainwashed. I've been there, I didn't like so I got out. Do what you wanna do. But as it is, you don't sound half as intelligent as Hucho, the guy you commented on. Just sayin', not judging. I'm beginning to think this discussion is not in place in this forum:)

    Greetz

  • How's about this "If God is for me who can be against me" or "Neither height nor depth nor power or principality can seperate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus." Would you like to have a biblical discussion? It's all good, I like you. Peace to you, Cooking Notes.

  • I do not like heavy metal. Why? Exactly what you mentioned: too much raw energy! So much that it hurts my (ears) creativity...

But G-d forbid, metal is NOT evil! It's just another way of expression for our restless souls. And some of those "metal" souls are harbor remarkable artistic potential and sometimes outright great talent! I might not like their way of expression, but I understand the premise and respect the work.

  • Metal is fueled by satin? So thats why it feels so smooth to the touch? Learn to spell.

  • True, but you gotta grab influences from somewhere. I love pretty much all music. I listen to and play bluegrass, jazz, rockabilly, surf all the way to Death Metal. I think all forms are valid. You only got 12 chromatic notes throughout the neck and depending what kinda tone you throw inbetween you and the amp will depict the music that you play. The order of the notes may change up or speed up but music is music is music. Britney Spears is relative to Joe Pass but Britney is an idiot!

  • Asshole why did you come back , does your mother know what an idiot she raised ? Jazz is the most boring shit music in the world all the guitarist end up on Herion thats how boring this shit is .

  • cookingwithoats, listen up Jethro, put down the meth pipe for a second, why don't you post a video on you.tube, if you can patch the hole in your blow up guitar. We would be more than happy to analyze your technique.

  • I love you too.

  • Awesome sound. What kind of guitar is that?

  • by the way grat video!!!!

  • guys.....you are all that kind of guys that loose time.......life is music...no matar what kind of music and by the way to be a good player you don't need to be able to play jaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzz............i can stroke 2 notes and kick your ass out.....only 2 notes.....remember.........music is coming from heart.....only from there......shit on your book....don't loose too much time on the booooooooooooooooookssssssssssss xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • you suck

  • you just dont understand the music then those who dont like it dont understand it

  • I like metal and blues and all that music, I have recently been trapped into Jazz and i love it.

  • thats good cause it is really great music when you get a feel for it

  • o well fucking idiot if you think jazz is boring why are you watching this videos??

fuck yourself asshole. get a job

  • Dude you can't find your ass from a hole in ground .

  • anybody who has studied with any TRUE jazz cats will know that KNOWLEDGE is power. the majority of out LEDGENDS had lots of training to go along with thier natural abilities. As in anything there will always be an exceptional few. The path is through THEORY it is the key.

  • Good explanation. Great lick. That would sound great over a B11 too. Or... same lick up a half step over the 5 chord in B (F#7) in a 1-4-5.

  • Nice lick, but tune the guitar next time

  • more likely F#7 ?

  • maybe F#m7 but not F#7 coz the lick uses an A quite a lot which is the major 3rd of an F# chord.

  • sorry the minor 3rd of F#

  • Yeah, but you can use an A natural over F#7, giving a blue note.

  • There's nothing wrong with learning musical ideas, and then applying them in a setting. It's the same as learning a language...weather you just hear someone say a word then repeat it, or someone taught you a new word and you use it in a sentence. I went to Berklee in 1986, and learned a great deal, I also learned alot from other musicians...it's an ongoing learning experience...no one has to get uptight about the approach...it's all about learning great music, and sharing it with the world.

  • holy charley parker, it looks like a theory book took a dump over the coment section of this page. Keep in mind that miles davis gave up a berkley education to PLAY jazz instead of studying it. Music isn't a science, if you approach it like an algorithm it's gunna sound like one. Chill and play. Sure theory is USEFUL but a vocabulary is MORE USEFUL, if you disagree ask a real jazz cat. Develop your vocabulary and your ear and it will take you places theory hasn't considered.

  • Thanks. Couldn't agree more.

  • lol.

u need to know your shit.

    straight up.

learning licks will help too sure. but the best way is learning why the those licks do work. and how to make your own licks using that knowledge.

theory is invaluable. listening is very important as well. so is practically applying what you learn from both those things. learning theory is just one thing which will be incredibly helpful towards your musical development.

  • You have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, it's *Berklee* that you're talking about, the music school in Boston where shitload of serious jazz players and others have come out of. Secondly, Berklee didn't exist when Miles was learning; it was Julliard that he gave up on to play jazz with Charlie Parker, whom he also studied theory and the "science" of music with, as well as with Dizzy Gillespie. All of these guys studied their collective asses off, as did Mike Stern, Jim Hall, etc

  • Are you a "real jazz cat"? I didn't think so. Do you think that actual "real jazz cats" are able to excel at jazz by neglecting theory?

  • That was in response to rinner16, sorry.

  • No problem. Thanks for the clarification. Rinnner16 is a moron.

  • And indeed, anyone who wants to always progress should always be a "perpetual student". There's always something to learn from other musicians especially ones like Parker, Gillespie, Stern, Hall etc.

  • Let's clarify some things: First, it's "Berklee", as in Berklee College of Music (where I attended, BTW). "Berkeley" is in California, you moron. Second, Miles Davis knew *all* of his music theory, as did Charlie Parker. Miles chose to forego his education at *The Juilliard School* to study with Charlie Parker. Theory is necessary to develop a decent vocabulary.

  • Are you an idiot? You spelled Berklee wrong, and also, Miles didn't go there, he won't to Juliard (which is in New York, not Boston). Besides basic fucking geography, back then, no one was studying jazz except the people like Miles. You couldn't go to a university and learn jazz, he dropped out because he was doing classical. In many interviews he states that they were all studying the music, it wasn't just a bunch of hogwash about feelings and what he was born with & you spellled Charlie wrong.

  • Thanks. I just started at the conservatory jazz :S. What bothers me is that I think your right.

  • what the hell is wrong with you guys? if it make's musical sence to you then it's cool

  • lol but u need to know the correct stuff.

theory is invaluable. trying to play jazz without theory is like trying to write poetry without a vocabulary.

at any rate it was just a throw away comment.

  • theory is indeed invaluable make no mistake but i'm certain that you know what i'm getting at. It's very easy to get caught up in what scale works over what chord or the merits of using a minor 3rd over a dominant 7th chord and loose sight of the bigger picture.

  • that's left-over bird-do that'll always be new...
