To me it sounds more like someone played the tunes on a guitar, put it on the computer and overlayed the two

Not quite, it's actually easier than that. All I did was use a simple trick to modify remove the vocals as best as I could, and then I did some more editing to try and change that sound a bit.

My other song was a "real remix" too. Even more so. It took me FOREVER to get the desired songs out of my last song "Egg Driver's theme" or whatever.
