Beautiful song. I remember when I first heard Sting's version of the song, it was so powerful I started crying. How can you not when listening to such emotionally powerful song.
Victor Jara.Chileans forced in2 an arena."Giv me Jara or die!" sez Pinochet. "I am Victor Jara," 1sez."No, *I* am,"sez anothr."No, me!"No~" Pinochet kills'em,til Victor can stand no mor."I AM VICTOR JARA," & is dragged to middle of arena.Crowd watches, cry'g,as the junta chops off Victors' fingers."Play ur guitar NOW, if u can," they mock, but V holds his bloody hands hi & sings, unit'g the ppl in song as he dies~ I learned V's story via Holly & she, via Sra Sosa. No one dies~if we Remember ->
@silverbonn:The above story of Victor Jara, is a verse in Holly's song, "It Could Have Been Me." Info via verse&intro she gave wen song was new.(Apologies 4 "pidgin-english"; space limits.) FYI, Mercedes Sosa, companera of singer Victor Jara. Prob'ly she who told Holly his story. The counter-tactic used by the Chilean people, thwart'g oppressors' "divide & conquer" schemes by allow'g one be singled out, is still used in civil disobedience train'g courses 2day. (From personal c.d. experience.)
I am crying for you and all the oppressed for whom you sang. Good-bye. I hope Pinochet hears your songs forever in Hell. Viva Sosa siempre, y sus cancions!
Best protest song of the last decade - well documented video- thanks all involved and especially all of those of you that have stuck buy our own home grown teacher, who like those of us that are a little older who are still willing to call ourselves feminists and humanest who are going to keep working towards making it a better place for all
Me too - in the early 80ies (as my name here says) I was "somewhere in central america". I would spend some of my time in the mountains, under condition that could be extremely hard, sometimes.
But every morning I would tune into a programme called "nuestra america canta" - our america sings - and, often hear the voice of Mercedes Sosa. And I knew again why I was where I was.
Thanks Santi :)

So beautiful! Expressive words, clear vocals, a message in the perfect way - they paint a picture and let you SEE it.
