I think there's a lot of great music that comes out of the UK, it's just that the ones that make it are always rubbish. I think the US gives genuinely good contemporary bands a better chance than the Uk music scene does
...that a lot of bands seem to be deliberately taking, hence their hatred of The Kooks et al. The Cribs took the long way around to get where they are and it's a bit too common place that labels form bands and smokescreen it as coming from the same place...
I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I'm still waiting to be blown away or moved by British bands. The Enemy literally seem to be writing their own lyrics over songs, even Kasabian did it with Thick As Thieves (think Kinks)
kingBigL3 - I've gotta say that personally bands like Japandroids and Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Titus Andronicus; these are bands I'm into at the minute along with Grizzly Bear and some other 'blog bands' I heard about through friends.
I think music 'scenes' look better from the outside in though, which is why I think that nobody is really right or wrong here.
The whole tension thing isn't really that common, but bands with integrity like The Cribs just dislike the mainstream route...
Peasey7 I can't agree with you more... However, I think apart from some of the lad rock and britpop, the UK music scene is TEN times better than that of the American music scene (and yes I am American.) I didn't know that there is this tension between bands like the cribs and bands like doves, because I like both of those bands, but if I ever hafta take sides, I am not gonna be no fuckin scenster... Someone please reply and inform me of what the fuck this is all about...peace...
Indie is as British as yorkshire puds and cups of tea. Like any good music, it comes from British bands copying styles and artists from America before moving on to bigger and better things. See Beatles, see Rolling Stones, see The Smiths, see Sex Pistols etc etc etc
Nobody has a good 'scene' right now anyway, but hopefully that'll turn out to make for another revolutionary period of time when people aren't just outright ripping off bands to make money...
I am huge fan of the cribs...however i take it he's addressing an american audience, because if so there music scene is definetly not all that and although the uk music scene aint at it's best at the moment, it's far better than americas.
Okay, this drives me insane and is so, so indicative of the rest of the world's ignorance on american indie music. The underground music scene here has been thriving for years, I mean please, if you are going to base it on Britney Spears and Katy Perry, Blink 182, Good Charlotte - Basically all of the top 40 here regurgitated to the rest of the world then yes, it does suck but where the hell do you think the indie scene originated from in the first place? regurgitated
Ok, fair play, You make a valid point. Not to sure about your point on where it all originated though. I think it's mainly because of how the system works over there, radio etc..., could you give me a few good new band up in america, just to expand my horizon??
Why take time to insult what you don't like?

So wait...are The Kooks popular in the US?
In that case then I feel the need to apologise too...Coldplay and The Kooks...the US really seems to get the ass end of the UK scene.

The Cribs are amazing, if anyone deserves to slate other people it's them. Ryan can't complain about Brit school though, his missus went there. ;)
