This is such a great song by such a great band. I really hope to see one of their gigs one day, if that is possible, either here in the US or by me traveling to their turf in NZ. God bless Martin Phillips and the Chills!
well wow - memories / after hearing this great song after all these years and reading the comments - I remember Martin playing at an Auckland university auditorium but didn't keep a copy of the tapes. If anyone knows the show I am talking about - Id love to know if there is a source somewhere - a 4 track recording if I remember
So so sad this vid is down! Any way to restore it? Can't be copyright issues--after 20+ years, any exposure the Chills get can only be a good thing...
I'm pretty amazed this band has fans as far away as Texas and Brazil. We used to hear them on the "Kiwi music show" on 4ZZZ radio in Brisbane, Oz, 20 yrs ago, but havent heard them since.
Apparently this song, like Pink Frost, was for the original drummer Martin Bull, who died of cancer; the leather jacket is his. Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I have no desire to disrespect the dead.
That is correct.....he died of leukemia(cancer of the blood or bone marrow). The jacket was actually willed to the lead singer Martin Phillipps by Martyn Bull.
The song has a very deep and sad history, much like the band. Unfortunately, this band(and this song for that matter) never really made it big outside of New Zealand, some blamed a "curse" while others believe it was Martin Phillipps addictions.
Clearly a case of coulda, woulda, shoulda, but never did band.
@carzyhorse138 - I believe you are correct with regard to this song, don't know about Pink Frost, but a great song nevertheless like all The Chills songs...
Couldn't believe I found this video. I last heard this song around 1994 in Lubbock, Texas when I was a DJ at KTXT (the Texas Tech student radio station).

Saw them in Bris in about 1991 - I knew I could die happy after that gig. One of the best bands ever.

Yes, that is the story I know. He wrote this for the late Martyn Bull who died of cancer.

Saw them twice during the 80's, in Athens, Greece.
I only remember that the single "Pink Frost" was dedicated to his memory.
Great great band!

LOVE this song, thanks for putting it up here. So many fond memories of the 80s. Where are they now !? (The Chills I mean, not the 80s)
And yes, a much better anthem for NZ than the Kapa Haka.
