Richard is the BEST.
He can't sing?????? What are you listening to? Richard Harris more than does justice to this beautiful and introspective piece. There isn't a person alive or dead who could have done this better. This song is a classic and will forever be among my favorites.
Weak lyrics and weak vocal, but still a brilliant song. The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ideas and the orchestrations were fabulous. There's never been a pop song before or since quite like this.
How can anyone not be moved by this song its a classic it some how does not matter that he cant sing it fits in with the whole song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up makes me think of the love of my life. brings a tear to my eye
Una de las mejores canciones que he escuchado en mi vida. No creo en Dios pero si existe que lo tenga en su Gloria por habernos brindado tan excelentes actuaciones como la bella canción que me retrotrae a mi adolescencia. Desde Lima Perù.
Black and white thinkers will only think of cakes melting in the rain. This song wasn't really written for such a thinker. There is symbolism in art.....and, in this song, there is much symbolism.
In the end, we all possess the capacity to make a shambles of our lives. Life is about choices; and we, too often, make the wrong choice...take the wrong road. Life is also a learning process and it's never too late to learn. Love is eternal whether or not we recognize love when it confronts us. All of this and more I find in this beautiful piece.
Make it stop, make it stop, god help us all. Burn this song its making me suicidal. Why, why did you ever upload this. This have to be the worst song I've ever heard, the only that good about is the great musical score. The singing sounds like an old man singing that's just had enema and reading a recipe book which he baked inside the cake that he dropped in the rain, What the hell is that? and this is from the guy who played Dumbledore. Not to be insensitive, but no,no,no. "Low" Flo Rider SUX 2

My father used to listen to this song. It was his favorite song. He used to tell me that Richard Harris was the singer behind that song. It is only now I realized that Richard Harris whom one of my favorite actor is the one who actually sing that song. It really feels great to hear that song again. it reminds me of my father. GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!

@TheSnowsbeauty5 The hair on the back of my neck bristles every time I hear this. Thank you for your comments. Another really great song by Harris is "the Yard goes on forever."
Ι love Richard Harris! I think he was a great actor. I love also this song, one of my favorites from my youth, but never realized that Richard Harris was the singer! This is the best version of the song by far!! Thank you for uploading!
Richard said his granddaughter came to him after reading the first Harry Potter book & told him he had to read it, because when the movie was made HE would have to play the part of Dumbledore. He said he couldn't disappoint her.
The lyrics, which include the lines "Someone left the cake out in the rain/I don't think that I can take it/'Cause it took so long to bake it/And I'll never have that recipe again", are symbolic and metaphorical. The song begins as a poem about love, then moves into a lover's lament.[4] When asked by interviewer Terry Gross what was going through his mind when he wrote the lyrics, Webb replied that the lyrics were meant to be symbolic, and they referred to the end of a love affair.
For ALL the retards who dont understand the underlying message of the lyrics, please dont keep embarrasing yourself in front of the rest of the planet by showing the world what intellectual insects you actually are.
Great song, sung by a great man, rest in peace Ricky!!
You've done an outstanding video as an homage to Richard Harris's works. I've loved MacArthur Park since it first came out, and Mr. Harris since Camelot.
Of all of the roles that Richard Harris played during his long, and legendary career, perhaps the one he will be linked to the most will be the last role he played, that of Profesor Albus Dumbledore.
Wonderful montage! If it were longer, one could include other films such as A Man Called Horse, Man in the Wilderness, Unforgiven, and others. So sad that we shall not have future films with him starring. We must be thankful for his great work over a long career. And that velvet singing voice I never tire of!
i love this song, but at the same time, if you play this song at certain parties, they will leave in droves. next time it is like 11pm or midnite and you want ppl to leave cause they won't leave put this song on or run joey run.
Richard Harris is the father of Jarad Harris who appears in Mad Men. He's also very handsome and is, I believe, married to the actress who plays a forensic specialist in Silent Witness.
Harris once said that he was in a play with Peter O'Toole. There were hardly in the second act. They would leave the theatre and go to the pub next door for twenty min. One time he came back late, ran across the stage, slipped off and fell in the lap of a lady in the front row. The lady said,"Mr. Harris, you are drunk!" Harris said, "if you think I'm drunk, you should see O'Toole."
Groucho Marks once pointed out that Peter O'Toole has a double phallic name
I listened to Richard Harris before I even became a teenager! I am now 51 years old! My mother used to listen to Richard Harris and I used to lay under the console record player and listen to all of her music. Fortunaltely for me she had a wide variety of music that she listened to. I always loved Richard harris and was so happy when I found him on here.
Richard sang this song at the Hammersmith Odeon circa 1971 in a concert where he showed outtakes from "Man Called Horse" and talked about making the film. Among his hilarious anecdotes about Hollywood is filming "Mutiny On The Bounty" where Marlon Brando had cue cards placed everywhere, because he didn't learn his lines, hence leaning his head to read.
Thank you, Richard for your sense of humor, daring, and celebration of life.
Thanks for taking the time to assemble this walk back through time. Now I want to see all the movies I missed starring Richard Harris! MacArthur Park is certainly an all time favorite of mine.
I was there at the beheading of King Charles1 scene for Cromwell at Shepperton Studios as Richard invited my friend and I who used to run his fan club in this country - ah those were the days.
@steele917 - I've seen "The Field", and I concur, great performance by Richard Harris. He was nominated for an Oscar for that performance, didn't get it, but much deserved NOD, that's for sure.
I don't know if this song is about first love, unrequited love, or really just a song about a damn birthday cake. But it's one of the most beautiful songs.
OMG! I can't believe this is Richard Harris. I knew he was talented (most favorite musical is Camelot) but this blows me away. This is Brilliant in an indescribable way! Thank you elisabeast for uploading this.
I don't know if anyone else commented on this, sorry if they did, but in your first bit showing clips of Richard playing Dumbledore in the first Harry Potter, the last picture in that clip is not of Richard Harris, it's of Michael Gambon who took on the role of Dumbledore after Richard passed away.
i was in a pub in London SW1. Terry, my mate, was talking to a chap as I walked in. He turned to me and said, "You like Richard Harris John. This is his brother" Dermot, I think, said to Terry upset, "Don't you ever intoduce me as Harriis brother!"
I just saw Camelot for the first time and fell in love with his Arthur. There's something endearing about him in that role that I can't put into words, but it really touched me. Then my mom told me how she pretty much wore out her record of MacArthur Park, so I just looked it up and now I've fallen in love with it, too. You're so right -- his voice is unique and he puts so much emotion into it.
Ive shook the queens hand before when she came to my primary school back in 98 and i can easily say that i wish i could have shook richards hand over the queens.
As much as i like his films, i like him as a person more which is a great compliment i think, i just like his attitude, you dont get many men like Richard Harris nowadays, he was a real man, the definition of bad boy, did what he wanted, didnt give a shit what people thought of him, done what he wanted to do with his life and ive always admired him for that, and respected him for that, hes my idol, my role model, i just wish i could have known him.
I couldn't agree with you more....I loved this guy as an actor...And when he had the guts to record Jimmy Webb's tunes, I admired him all the more. For all the ridicule and scorn heaped upon Harris for his vocal works...it's a masterpiece. It is my most favorite song too.
I knew mr harris , he would have liked you .,same wavelenght, you have sort of have met him...John T. no big complicacitions, its simple , just get on with life?
He was great on Parkinson. He's being interviewed by Parky, when he is asked to sing - he puts the lit cigarette he is smoking to the side of the ashtray on the table infront of him, and walks to the front of the band and sings the song. He finishes the song, and he walks back to Parkinson to resume the interview, picks up the cigarette he put on the side of the ashtray and carries on smoking it. That level of cool just doesn't exist anymore.
the sad thing is that there are idiots who still will only think of him as Dumbledore, oh and the people who still that was his last film, he didnt even want to do the movie, look on any interview. Dumbledore was awesome, but he had a lifetime of a beautiful career.
Richard Harris did good playing Albus Dumbledore in the 1st an 2nd shows. But then he died an then Michael Gambon played Albus Dumbledore in the 3rd 4th 5th an 6th shows. Everybody misses Richard Harris
I'm old enough to remember this song, but we also had the record set of Camelot, starring....Richard Harris on Broadway. This my parents saw while they were planning me....ok, yuk, I picture that during intermission my dad said, Want to make her? And my mom said sure, then returned to their seats. The other method of doing this is something I refuse to contemplate.
I've always loved this song. I've always loved its thoughtful, sweet quality. I love the way Richard Harris sings. Maybe because he's Irish, he sings with a mournful lament. Very beautiful. He's great, and he will be sadly missed.
Wow, you learn something new every day. I was always a fan of Richard Harris' movies and acting, but never knew he sang this or had a recording career. Don't know how I missed that one, but glad I know now!

@steele917 - I've seen "The Field", and I concur, great performance by Richard Harris. He was nominated for an Oscar for that performance, didn't get it, but much deserved NOD, that's for sure.

@steele917 That was John Hurt, another fine actor.

Harris was a far superior Dumbledore to his successor. RIP Mr. Harris.
Lengsel7 1 year ago
I don't know if anyone else commented on this, sorry if they did, but in your first bit showing clips of Richard playing Dumbledore in the first Harry Potter, the last picture in that clip is not of Richard Harris, it's of Michael Gambon who took on the role of Dumbledore after Richard passed away.

i was in a pub in London SW1. Terry, my mate, was talking to a chap as I walked in. He turned to me and said, "You like Richard Harris John. This is his brother" Dermot, I think, said to Terry upset, "Don't you ever intoduce me as Harriis brother!"
As Terry looked hurt, my eyes went up.

Richard Harris , R.I.P.
He was my King Arthur. The best ever.
I became a fan of Richard Harris since I first saw him in CAMELOT the movie.
And he excels in "McCarthur Park".
There is a quality to his voice that I find irresistible.
Never mind trying to interpret the metaphor of THE LOST CAKE IN THE RAIN....invent something which will please you.
Just do not let the lyrics prevent you from enjoying a beautiful and lasting great piece of pop ( almost classic ) music of the late 60's.

Brady2k10 2 years ago 5
I couldn't agree with you more....I loved this guy as an actor...And when he had the guts to record Jimmy Webb's tunes, I admired him all the more. For all the ridicule and scorn heaped upon Harris for his vocal works...it's a masterpiece. It is my most favorite song too.

Happy Birthday, Richard.

Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter 1 an 2
harrypotter1219 2 years ago
the sad thing is that there are idiots who still will only think of him as Dumbledore, oh and the people who still that was his last film, he didnt even want to do the movie, look on any interview. Dumbledore was awesome, but he had a lifetime of a beautiful career.
Nina2560 2 years ago
Richard Harris did good playing Albus Dumbledore in the 1st an 2nd shows. But then he died an then Michael Gambon played Albus Dumbledore in the 3rd 4th 5th an 6th shows. Everybody misses Richard Harris
harrypotter1219 2 years ago
I'm old enough to remember this song, but we also had the record set of Camelot, starring....Richard Harris on Broadway. This my parents saw while they were planning me....ok, yuk, I picture that during intermission my dad said, Want to make her? And my mom said sure, then returned to their seats. The other method of doing this is something I refuse to contemplate.

I've always loved this song. I've always loved its thoughtful, sweet quality. I love the way Richard Harris sings. Maybe because he's Irish, he sings with a mournful lament. Very beautiful. He's great, and he will be sadly missed.
