Yeah I've always defended the movie despite it's lack of accuracy. The miniseries is just poorly directed and the acting is subpar at best. It just has no feeling to it at all.
Is the Reverend Mother some type of High Priestess, Goddess or the Representive of God in Dune Myth? and Is anything else said about the Supreme God Creator the " Known Universe" ? thank you
@brightwhitelight1 The Reverend Mother is just one of the highest ranking members of the Bene Gesserit (who have spent thousands of years manipulating bloodlines to bring around the Kwisatz Haderach((sp?) sorry - my spelling may be off cause I've not read the books in at least 3 years). They pass themselves as advisors and concubines but in reality they're one of the major powers pulling the strings behind the scenes. All they have to do with religion is manipulating it to their own ends.
The Dune Miniseries was hit and miss for me. One one hand some of the costume designs where fantastic such as the Harkonnens with their Asian influence. On the other hand you had the Spacing Guild members who look like Klu Klux Klan members. Although the mini series was closer to the books, I still prefer Lynch's Dune. You just can't beat that Shakespearian feel it has to it.
Here's what I never understood about this scene- what if he'd failed and she had killed him? Wouldn't the unprovoked assassination of an heir to a great house cause the LANSRAAD to annihilate the Bene Gesserit? Doesn't that violate their Great Convention? How could she possibly risk that?
@profcash Maybe. They are powerful. But the Atreides were sharp too. Thufir & Gurney would see right through anything she tried to pull. And the Duke could probably rally the whole LANSRAAD against the Bene Gesserit. An assasination would compromise their role as servants and manipulators in the great houses.
@jhop9898 It was probably a pshycological thing. Producing a threat Paul would know well and threaten to use it forcing him to keep his hand in the box. Or it didn't have poison on it just a sedative knocking him out if he did. Would have been just as affective.
Yeah the Reverend Mother in the Lynch movie was better but the movie as a whole wasn't as good as the miniseries. I can't stand the Lynch movie with the exception of the closing scenes.
Paul = 15 yrs old with dark hair in black Atredies uniform.
Mohiam = Haggard, wrinkly old woman in robes.
Setting = Ancient stone castle with views of wet, green fields.
How could this be any more fucked up?!
This is why I love Lynch's adaption. He took a lot of liberties in areas to make it concise, but it still FEELS right. This SciFi version is... a mess.
and if there goes about the voice... the technique is very difficult to learn and from the 3rd person it´s obvious, that only the person that is put under the compel of someone´s "Voice" hears it changed but anyone else hears either normal speech either nothing. Voice is often combined with direction whispering what makes the Voice even more effective and more dangerous. From what I understand the different (changed) tone can hear only the "victim" of Voice like we hear it in the video...
I think that our czech actress did MORE THAN WELL !!! As like as actress who played Chani... this Dune (miniseries) is the best one from all !! Nor only the cast but the special effects, setting, dramaturgy everything was perfect !! The older Lynch version is absolute crap without any passion, fun and it totally turns away from the novel and it´s base!! WOnder how anyone can doubt about quality of the miniseries Dune cos´ it´s the closest and best material ever made as adaption of the novel!
The conversations with their "voices" is supposed to be telepathic mind control, why are they mouthing the words? Stupid director! The original 1984 version had it right!
More examples of poor casting in this scene -- you know, as much of a trainwreck that Lynch's film was, the casting was (mostly) good. Well, Paul being the big, glaring contradiction. His expression in the "My name is a killing word!" scene makes me laugh every time.
@rugbynimbus I've got to disagree with you on the casting of Paul. Kyle McLaughlin portrayed the naive but hopeful, PRESCIENT, hero better than the chode in any part of the mini-series -even in Children of Dune, though I think it was because of all the thoughts that were portrayed internally in the original flick rather than said
@CrimsonPhish - Well, it's not like the bar was set all that high. You can't really talk about Kyle McLaughlin as an actor and use words like "gifted" or "versatile". Basically he offers two character options: sullen & brooding, or dark & searching. Either way, there's a lot left to be desired. But yes, I agree that he's the lesser of two twats in portraying Paul. At least it was memorable if not laughable.
This interpretation of the box scene I think is inferior to the Lynch movie's version. Dune is a dark story, no need for all of the flashy garb either. Lynch's version made all aspects of Herbert's novels very realistic; the Bene Gesserit, the Fremen, the Spacing Guild, the Court on Kaitain..this version is over-acted, campy, and razes the simplicity that made Dune the legend that it is.
Susanna Geislerova [Helen Mohiam] tries to save this scene, but Alec Newman [Paul] just can't seem to get it right. By Children of Dune, Newman did a great job as Paul.
M'enfin...
Overacting is the new good acting apparently... Since everyone thinks theatre is about how dramatic you look. Thanks Shakespearean actors prancing around.
@mercerdamon the bald one? but yeah, you're right. And 'the voice' isn't supposed to sound different from normal speech. It's supposed to be subtle, minor, well-selected intonations and inflections
i'd also add that the ENTIRE REASON for this sequence seems to have been glossed over. it feels like this scene was included just because, well it's in the book, but there's no explanation of the significance of what just took place, why the Reverend Mother felt the need to test Paul with the Gom Jabbar. Or do they get to that later in this version?
I KNOW. It doesn't even really speak about how she defines whether or not he is a human or an animal and the significane of both. I don't believe they get to that later, although I haven't seen the whole thing. (couldn't stand it)
same here, and this kind of thing is pretty much why. i've even forgotten most of what i HAVE seen of this version. the main impression i remember having is "wow, this version is a little more in depth than Lynch's version. too bad they're warping Paul's character to the point where it doesn' t matter."
Visually, I wished that they stayed true with the design motif from the David Lynch film - which feels like it's the Medieval-Renaissance Era set in the future. This first tv series feels like the sets and scenes are more like coming from Star Trek or Star Wars.
But the story was really faithful to the novel. I was happy that they improved the sets and other designs (especially the costumes) on Children of Dune.
Hm, well yeah. Some call it the "funny hats version of Dune"... :-D The most irritating costumes in the whole miniseries were those of Shaddam, I guess. Mainly that "mega-big white sleaves" one. :-P The stillsuits were the opposite - exactly according to the novel(unlike those in Lynch version, which looked like rubber diving suits totally unsuitable for any desert - the rubber would heat them up tremendously, no matter the cooling system)...
i saw it in 2002 end of year, in fox sci-fi channel form brazil, and was my first contact with dune, atually i finished of read the books, and i already saw too, the david lyunchs version, but this one of 2000 mini series, was my first one, and was for t his i fall in love with duna, but i must say i never found it to download or in any place to sell or rent in my city, do you know what can i do?
You know, that weirding voice reminds me of Sarah Kerrigan as the Queen of Blades from the first movie.
