I don't know Kinison very well, but judging from this skit, Hicks' jokes seem to have more insight and commentary, than simply spewing out verbal vitriol and cannot be compared. However, if that is your thing, then it is no wonder you think so highly of him.
Bill Hicks is a comic god and no mistake, but IMO he let his left/liberal/tinfoil-hat-wearing agenda take precedence over his comedy. Often when forced to choose between being funny and making some whacky left point he would choose whacky lefty-ism. To be fair I think he took way more comic risks than any comedian since his time and it often involved his whack lefty political outlook, but it just wasn't that funny on a lot of occasions.

I've watched several more clips of Kinison since my last comment, and my opinion has now changed. He was not as insightful as Hicks. Hicks used his act to make piercing and perceptive criticisms of social and political norms - the bulk of Kinison's act was taken up ranting about sex, marriage and gays (including some offensively ignorant statements about AIDS).

On a comedic level, Kinison was probably funnier than Hicks, but Hicks material was A LOT more insightful and thought-provoking. Both men sought to shock their audience, but shock tactics were much more central to Kinison's act than Hicks'. Occasionally Kinison would drop an insightful gem like his world hunger bit, but this was the exception, not the norm for his material. Kinison was a great comedian - Hicks was a great thinker. That's the difference.

Not the 80's I remember. The 80's I remember were the ones where they tried to hang Ozzy's ass for saying things on his recordings that were nothing compared to what's said by today's musicians. Remember the PMRC? Christians in the 80's attempting to gag musicians and entertainers. Not exactly the good ol' days. I miss Sam but I certainly have no delusions about the 80's being the bye gone days of free speech. They weren't.

I don't know Kinison very well, but judging from this skit, Hicks' jokes seem to have more insight and commentary, than simply spewing out verbal vitriol and cannot be compared. However, if that is your thing, then it is no wonder you think so highly of him.

Bill Hicks is a comic god and no mistake, but IMO he let his left/liberal/tinfoil-hat-wearing agenda take precedence over his comedy. Often when forced to choose between being funny and making some whacky left point he would choose whacky lefty-ism. To be fair I think he took way more comic risks than any comedian since his time and it often involved his whack lefty political outlook, but it just wasn't that funny on a lot of occasions.

Well at least that's a fair assessment, whereas you could've said "shut up, you're wrong" like some people, so I appreciate that. Personally I always thought he had a fantastic balance between comedy and radical ideas, which is why he strikes such a cord with me. I do understand where you're coming from though, because sometimes he had a tendency to take some statements far past the realm of comedy, but it took serious balls to do that. But I always thought he was funny, but that's just IMO.

Hicks influenced Kinison, and Hicks didn't didn't steal any joke from anybody. Kinison could scream and yell all he wanted to, but he would never be able to top Hicks. It also doesn't matter what other comedians thought, it doesn't make them right. If you don't think Bill could make people laugh harder than ever, then you've never heard Bill Hicks, and I still doubt you have. I'm done with you now, because this is just a waste of time.

I've watched several more clips of Kinison since my last comment, and my opinion has now changed. He was not as insightful as Hicks. Hicks used his act to make piercing and perceptive criticisms of social and political norms - the bulk of Kinison's act was taken up ranting about sex, marriage and gays (including some offensively ignorant statements about AIDS).

On a comedic level, Kinison was probably funnier than Hicks, but Hicks material was A LOT more insightful and thought-provoking. Both men sought to shock their audience, but shock tactics were much more central to Kinison's act than Hicks'. Occasionally Kinison would drop an insightful gem like his world hunger bit, but this was the exception, not the norm for his material. Kinison was a great comedian - Hicks was a great thinker. That's the difference.

Actually, White men didn't ENSLAVE anyone. The Black slaves were already enslaved (by there own people) through tribal wars, and the slave trade (in Africa) which in turn, the Slave traders Bought the slave from the Tribes that traded with these traders. The slaves then to came the new world. They still have slaves in parts of Africa to this day.

Comparing people who voluntarily work for someone else in exchange for (often very good) money to what we usually refer to as slaves is making a pretty big mockery out of the million of people who actually were slaves in the West, and those who still are in other parts of the world.
It is sad when people feel the need to marginalize the suffering of millions of real slaves to make a weak point supporting a fucked up ideology that would destroy a society over night.
