People that text and drive are civil fucks. Seriously, it's so common and many people I know do it. Also, a surprising number of elderly, say 50 and up do it too. The penalty should be something like 1000 dollar fine and/or DUI consequences like raising your insurance 500 % or losing your license until you take a class on it and retake the test. Same goes for drinking and driving, substance use while driving and eating while driving.

one of my friends from the 5th grade got into a car accident and died and i hate him for it because you're not supposed to do that. I used to love driving my car, and getting really high, and going really fast, and now i get afraid of driving, and i sometimes start to drive really slow. So, despite having not enjoyed being picked on in the 5th grade, and even further not giving a fuck as to the fact that i saw him at a festival, i just want to say, Fuck SAK. Using a cell phone while you drive is more dangerous than driving drunk! They lock drunk drivers up in jail, but why don't they send people to jail when they talk or text on their cell phone while driving? I think they should!

My attitude is that of a safe driver, I know my limits and I don't test them on the road. There are things you know you can do, and things you think you can do.

We can have voice recognition on some cars to navigate the GPS.
So why can't we have that same voice recognition to type the messages to us? The technology exists, I used a demo or two of it in my PC. It can save lives but they prefer to save money. I guess savin' lives ain't worth it unless it pays.
Seems like dalefan has it all figured out. I actually had the accident mintues AFTER I got done texting. The road was black ice & no salt was put down! You can still crash & not be texting.
@wcu19460 true you can have accidents even when your not texting (I have been involved myself) but you are more likely to have an accident while texting compared to paying attention to the road.
In my 120,000 miles of driving so far AT least 1,000 miles were spent texting & driving. I simply slow down to the speed limit check & around me for oncoming speeders and other vehicles. If its completely clear I quickly send my text while glancing at the road. Not saying I'm super human but I can drive, text, bite my sandwich & shift my 5-speed stick. Driving requires you to pay attention period. The road has to come first.

This is a great idea to show teens how dangerous texting while driving is. Every little reminder helps. I've started giving out "TXTNG KILLS" thumb bands (textingkillsthumbbands) to my clients who have teenage drivers. They seem to like them quite a bit and hopefully they're wearing them when they're driving as a reminder to put the phone away.

at the risk of attracting some negative attention... i've done it for years, probably more than 5yrs now without any problems.. i can do it with a single hand, and normally dont need to look at the screen to know what i'm typing... also, i chose the right moment when i am stopped or when i know that there's no lights, traffic build up, crossings etc coming up on me, cos there could be unexpected things happening with all that... it is do-able, although peferably not recommended...

People who CHOOSE to be "distracted" drivers... lighting a cigarette, texting, making phone calls, applying make-up... are simply selfish. Think of others! Absolutely pathetic, note their minimum driving age is only fifteen and the permitted blood alcohol level is 0.08. Why wasn't texting while driving banned right from when mobile phones first came in? The dangers would have been obvious. Even before mobile phones or sms, it was clear that read and writing while driving was dangerous, the end full stop.
There were no differences in the amounts of car accidents before or after the law got passed. Just another reason to fork over that money to the "man".

I've done an "online test" and it was "rigged" so to speak. You are driving like 150mph through toll booths while changing lane every 5 seconds.

Most people don't have the common sense. That is why they text and drive. A lady was on my right side and turned in front of me while I was going straight, guess what, she was texting. Destroyed the side of her BMW. Funny thing is I have a 2500 dodge with a 6" lift, she never saw me, I got a scratch on my bumper. Her lane was not a turning also, so she was in the wrong.
We need to ban texting while driving and make it a Federal Offense if you get in a wreck and hurt somebody.

This is so unrelieable. Most people are use to their phone that they dont even need to look at their phone to text. And MOST people have common sense and know when theres a right time to text.

So get this...a friend of mine got in a car accident...a really bad one where he was slammed on the driver side. The idiot who ran the red light and hit him was texting. I think texting is worse than driving while intoxicated because at least the person driving drunk is trying to pay attention on the road as of texters they aren't paying attention except to pay attention on what they are texting on their phone.
There's a woman in California that was texting while driving and rear ended a car that burst into flames killing a woman. Thankfully, the texter is down doing 7 years. About a month ago near Buffalo NY, an idiot flat deck tow truck driver was texting on one device and talking on a cell in his other hand. He crashed into a car, went through a fence, side-swiped a house and finally crashed into a swimming pool. His truck was loaded with a car. Wonderful.

Real-life driving is reasonably forgiving (most of the time). When you do something stupid, others will slam on the brakes or go around to aviod collision. So many younger drivers take a false comfort in a fact that they have not had many accidents, so they must be "good drivers". Until that one unfortunate time when the other driver would be looking the other way and will pay for it with blood... A simulator will not compensate for you. One mistake will lead to a collision. This is the point.

Ive lost control of my honda many times in the winter sliding all over, but if i stay calm and do small movements with the wheel i can straighten the car back out and drive safely with control. I don't have "luxury-suspension" or "air ride" So i can feel the road, like its me walking

You think you have skill because you've done it so many times now it's become routine. But even with skill, there will be mistakes, no matter how skilled you are.
That's why humans err and are not infallible. You aren't skilled just because you do things the way you do them, or think of it. That's what I learned.

People that text and drive are civil fucks. Seriously, it's so common and many people I know do it. Also, a surprising number of elderly, say 50 and up do it too. The penalty should be something like 1000 dollar fine and/or DUI consequences like raising your insurance 500 % or losing your license until you take a class on it and retake the test. Same goes for drinking and driving, substance use while driving and eating while driving.

We can have voice recognition on some cars to navigate the GPS.
So why can't we have that same voice recognition to type the messages to us? The technology exists, I used a demo or two of it in my PC. It can save lives but they prefer to save money. I guess savin' lives ain't worth it unless it pays.

In my 120,000 miles of driving so far AT least 1,000 miles were spent texting & driving. I simply slow down to the speed limit check & around me for oncoming speeders and other vehicles. If its completely clear I quickly send my text while glancing at the road. Not saying I'm super human but I can drive, text, bite my sandwich & shift my 5-speed stick. Driving requires you to pay attention period. The road has to come first.

I've started giving out "TXTNG KILLS" thumb bands (textingkillsthumbbands) to my clients who have teenage drivers. They seem to like them quite a bit and hopefully they're wearing them when they're driving as a reminder to put the phone away.

at the risk of attracting some negative attention... i've done it for years, probably more than 5yrs now without any problems.. i can do it with a single hand, and normally dont need to look at the screen to know what i'm typing... also, i chose the right moment when i am stopped or when i know that there's no lights, traffic build up, crossings etc coming up on me, cos there could be unexpected things happening with all that... it is do-able, although peferably not recommended...

Absolutely pathetic, note their minimum driving age is only fifteen and the permitted blood alcohol level is 0.08. Why wasn't texting while driving banned right from when mobile phones first came in? I've done an "online test" and it was "rigged" so to speak. You are driving like 150mph through toll booths while changing lane every 5 seconds.
Thats not reality. If you take chances and drive like a maniac, yeah, DONT TEXT OR TALK TO THE PHONE, but if you are sensible at all and know you arent taking extra chances, go right ahead. I sure as hell do and I have never had a close call because of that.

Destroyed the side of her BMW. Funny thing is I have a 2500 dodge with a 6" lift, she never saw me, I got a scratch on my bumper. Her lane was not a turning also, so she was in the wrong.

So get this...a friend of mine got in a car accident...a really bad one where he was slammed on the driver side. The idiot who ran the red light and hit him was texting. There's a woman in California that was texting while driving and rear ended a car that burst into flames killing a woman. Thankfully, the texter is down doing 7 years. About a month ago near Buffalo NY, an idiot flat deck tow truck driver was texting on one device and talking on a cell in his other hand. He crashed into a car, went through a fence, side-swiped a house and finally crashed into a swimming pool. His truck was loaded with a car. Wonderful.

Real-life driving is reasonably forgiving (most of the time). When you do something stupid, others will slam on the brakes or go around to aviod collision. So many younger drivers take a false comfort in a fact that they have not had many accidents, so they must be "good drivers". Until that one unfortunate time when the other driver would be looking the other way and will pay for it with blood... A simulator will not compensate for you. One mistake will lead to a collision. This is the point.

Just cause you can't do something, doesn't mean others can't. Maybe you should try to text and drive and die, and do us all a favor. Lets hope you don't take anyone with you, that would be selfish and unfortunate.

@Vandrandelik I think the point here is, better safe than sorry. People think they won't get into accidents if you know how to drive, but I did that mistake and ended nearly killing someone for doing something I thought was a move of my own confidence.
That's why overconfidence can kill. :)

@ArcanineKing Well you see, you have over confidence. You had confidence and no SKILL..... You were basically lying to yourself about what you can and cannot do. You believed you could do it, and had the confidence too...but you lacked the ability and the skill to do it right. So I'm glad you learned and didnt kill sum1 or hurt yourself.
But in my case, i have the skill. I don't need confidence because i know I can do it. Just like I know 2 +2 =4 . It's simple, don't do what you can't

@Vandrandelik No one can claim to have skill unless they're absolutely sure. I drove on for years without knowing that I would actually get into an accident and thought to have skill. You think you have skill because you've done it so many times now it's become routine. But even with skill, there will be mistakes, no matter how skilled you are.
That's why humans err and are not infallible. You aren't skilled just because you do things the way you do them, or think of it. That's what I learned.

@ArcanineKing Well, when you are in the Car, that is all you should be focusing on, is Driving and the Road. And When i Drive all i focus on is the Road and the cars around me..... SINCE I DONT NEED MY EYES TO TEXT... I can do this....
If you can drive a stick shift, you can text and drive...come on, its driving with one hand. And if you have all your phone commands memorized its just like shifting gears....

@ArcanineKing I don't drive stick, but I do know some girls who can do stick and text...idk if they can do it safe tho, girls blow at driving. they just do it at the stop light more so, you only have to shift when accellerating or decelleratiing

@Vandrandelik Mostly stopping, braking, and such. You need the outmost attention when driving, especially when driving stick. Any mistake can lead to a fatal accident, skilled or not, manual or automatic, unless the car does the driving or texting for you.

@ArcanineKing Lmao.... dood don't be salty cuz you can't text and drive without hurting yourself or someone else...and I can. You only shift at certain points, you are probably shifting 10% of the 90% time spent driving. So if YOU ARE SMART, you can time it and multitask accordingly.
Didn't your parents tell you, that you can do whatever you want in life? Be whatever you want to be? Well im proving evolution right by texting and driving safely, while others die trying or get hurt and learn....

Your handling a vehicle, that can kill you and others, in less than split second of your mistake. if you were biking, fine, anything else if it didn't involve the risk of ruining or taking anothers life who didn't deserve you fucking it up just so you can talk to your palls or some shit. So far you haven't hurt some one, doesn't mean its not possible for you to mess up.

I can't balance on a tight-rope over the grand-canyon...so I don't do that....But i can text and drive, safely without hurting myself or others, so i do that. I can't change my clothes while driving, so I simply don't do that.
You are failing to see that, I KNOW what I can do. I don't underestimate or Over-Estimate myself Ever.

@Vandrandelik Multitasking has nothing to do with being smart. In fact, most females have the ability to multitask while most men don't. And anyway, it's a proven fact that when you multitask on two things, you are splitting your focus on those two things and using less concentration on each. So if YOU were smart you would realize that everything your saying is such bullshit, it's almost funny... If you're so obsessed with texting that you must drive AND do it, go to a fucking therapist.
