@kristelchandelier Cats do that to stimulate the milk flow in their mother's nipples when they want to feed. If a cat does that to you, it is showing that it feels safe and comforted with you. Also, it usually kneads (yep that's what it's called) to flatten an area before it sleeps on it.

My ragdoll does it to me in the mornings to wake me up. All cats are different.

People who are selling cats or dogs under table can get criminally charged if they get busted. Huh? That doesn't make any sense. I live in the US. I volunteer at two "no kill" animal shelters of which there are hundreds. They don't breed animals at the shelters. In fact, they spade or neuter cats and dogs so they don't reproduce and cause more unwanted pets who end up neglected or on death row in other shelters. It is the greedy idiots out there breeding pets to make a buck who ultimately contribute to the unwanted pet population.

Oh, we have terrible economy here as well at the moment, probably even worse than in the U.S., but it´s one of the fundamental rights that pets have a right to live (talking about pets here, like cats, dogs, small mammals, herps, etc..). It´s not allowed to kill them unless they are ill and no chance to heal them. It´s very different here to the U.S., even declawing is forbidden. A vet doing this without any medical reason can lose his licence!

Declawing is causing arthrosis and is simply inhumane. Scratching in a part of a cats natural behavior and it harms their spines when you declaw them, cause they can´t walk anymore as meant by nature. It is like AMPUTATING the first joints of your fingers or your toes. They need their claws to defense themself aswell. Ppl only to do that to save their furniture, what is just plain wrong. Herps = herpetology - reptiles.

That makes me happy to hear!! :) Even if they are indoor the claws are a very important part of their anatomy. Many vets in the states say it doesn´t harm them and there is simply onme reason for them to say that - money. Sad but true. During my education I´ve learned how many diseases it can cause and was pretty shocked. They are many other way to safe your furniture and your hands. Dewclawing is not like just pulling the claws, the entire first joints get amputatet and it´s very painful.

I live in germany, I´m a homeopath (also do physiotherapy) for animals and work together with a common veterinary together in one office. It´s forbidden in whole europe. The US is one of the last countries where it´s sadly still allowed. But I´ve read there is actually any debate going on about to forbid Onychectomys (declawing) there as well - fingers crossed!

Kittens knead to stimulate milk from their mommy, as an adult cat do it as instinct. It has nothing to do with being weened too early because every single cat kneads. It's not possible that every single cat was weened too early. It's a comfort thing for the cat!!

You can't "teach" a cat to do this. This is what a cat does when it's been weaned from it's mother a bit too soon. This is what the newbord does to the mother to get the milk flowing to feed. It's a habit they never break.

But a cat that weaned naturally grows out of it and doesn't do it.

I've had several cats that still did this and they'll massage you, too if you sit still long enough. lol

This cat is "kneadind". It's a residual behavior from when they were kittens. Kittens knead their mother's stomach when they want milk, so when they do it to other animals/humans, they are expressing a feeling of comfort and peace that they associate with their mother. In any case, this video is pure awesomeness. :-)
