He's one of the rare performers who has really improved with age. His voice keeps getting richer and richer, his emotional depth just better and better.
Still has the pipes I see, respect to any man with the balls for stage performance. Odd his career remained slightly below the radar of the "A-List" one of many VERY talented people who never really got the respect they worked hard to deserve while other "less respectable talents" selfishly absorbed the spotlight in their place.
OK so what was the intro he sang? That was something different something about "second hand man" sounded like "sandman" the first time he says it at the very beginning". The actual song "Cats in the Cradle" doesn't start in this video until 1:30 into the video.
The effortless versatility and sheer warmth and intensity in his voice is staggering. Truly among the top five Broadway singers of all time!!!! RANGE. *coo*
this is so surprising to hear agent Gideon from Criminal Minds sing like that, haha. Great actor and a good singer it turns out. Just found out he was also inigo montoya from princess bride. very cool
My wife and I saw Patti LuPone and Mandy on Tuesday night (21 July 2009) and they were very entertaining. It was a great show, I'd recommend it to anyone, especially if you love to hear Mandy sing. I wish he'd done 'Cats in the Cradle' though. He's a beautiful man, he has a marvelous way about him. Yes he may have been a little rude to someone, but he is human afterall, and lets face it, who's not rude to someone in their lives? Maybe he was having a bad day, maybe he had a cold.
slow why that long section from carousel? thought they could've done one of the duets from "Sweeny" and may be a few other Sondheim greats anyway great show overall
Good point. People that claim Mandy was 'mean' , what kind of person are they? I've met hundreds of big and mild names... I have only had one guy ever be rude to me, and that was David Carradine. He actually has an assistant that tells everyone who approaches him that "Mr Carradine doesn't have time for people, unless they buy his book for $50". He did that to everyone... Sounds like Mandy dismissed one woman, who sounded abit obsessive...maybe a stalker? Does that make him mean?
I'm going to see both of them together next month... Famous people are like regular people...some good days, some bad... If you were having a bad day, and someone you don't know came up and started pestering you for your time, which is limited, would you ALWAYS respond kindly? I scowl at someone at least once a week...usually at those mall sales people that spray me with colonge.
Sounds like a really rare instance. I have had the pleasure of meeting him twice once in NYC and singing with him once in Columbus, Ohio about 19 years ago. He asked if anyone had ever wanted to hug him or sing with him at the Columbus Zoo outdoor arena. lots of people were afraid. I ran right for it! I wish we had had the cell phone technology we have now!
Maybe he was just having an off day? I met him at one of his London shows in January, and he was so kind and polite, and made sure everyone who wanted an autograph got one, though he was clearly pushed for time. He strikes me as a gentleman, who can be moody sometimes, just like the rest of us!
Even Broadway stars have off days. Adam Pascal had quite a few (especially when he was in Rent after the movie was made). He was content to sign autographs and talk to fans, but people started shouting at him to pose for pictures. With a huge crowd around, he couldn't - but they pestered him and he did (rightly) get annoyed. But you know those people are walking away saying, "All I did was ask him to pose for a second and he was SO MEAN!"
He actually did a very moving rendition of 'Always' in an episode of DLM, of the same name - you know, the one where Rube visits his daughter Rosie in the nursing home and sings to her?
Wonderful. Simply wonderful. He has such a unique style of singing that makes everything such a personal and emotional account. I am a classical singer, and although most of my favorite singers are classical too... almost no one moves me as much as Mandy. Oh, to see him perform live...
Well, I saw him live and we stayed after wards for his autograph. He wasnt very nice, like this lady had dedicated her life to writing HIS life down. I know that hes a broadway star and all, but manners cost nothing. But you're right about the voice.
Before I scrolled down and noticed this, I was wiping the tears from my eyes too. I am also a straight 41yrs old man. But I think what did it is that I'm a father and I love my boy with all my heart - GREAT performance Mandy!
You're wrong btw, crying doesn't make you gay. The only reason someone would mention this if they thought there was a direct association. I hope you figure out this before you are 40, for your own sake. Recognizing and living through your feelings takes courage. Being gay means you are attracted to your same sex, not that you are capable of sheding tears.
Wow he is amazing! Beautiful voice... I will miss him on Criminal Minds and as Rube on Dead like me, but if this is what he wants to do, good for him.
getting tickets for his concert at the kodak la. seeing mandy perform has been a dream of mine for years! my daughter made my other 2 dreams come true (itzack perelman play the violin and michel barishnikof dance live) this is my christmas present. The first time I ever heard him sing was in "Dick Tracey." I saw him every once in awhile in roles that had nothing to do with eachother, and I never knew it was the same guy.
Mandy is just plainly incredible. I grew up listening to Harry Chapin b/c of my mother and Mandy is the closest thing my generation has to a Harry Chapin. A message man.
Mandy is an all around guy and not at all effiminate -- movies, opera, tv -- the guy will never not have a job. First time I saw him that I recall was in "The Princess Bride" and he keeps getting better and better

Bravo to Mandy Patinkin, such a talented, expressive artist. This is a moving rendition of this song and he does it so brilliantly. Truly a remarkable performance.
