They aired this in central Pennsylvania, too, on WJAC (channel 6, originally channel 13). I always thought this was created by WJAC since no other station aired this. Around here the three specials (including Suzy Snowflake and Frosty the Snowman) would air until January 7 since a lot of people around here celebrate Russian Christmas.

Only one of the best Christmas short films next to Suzy Snowflake!!!! <3 (: Thank you so much for the upload. Every time I watch this, I'm in my happy land(:
How wonderful to see this again and reminicent of a bygone era. Thank you to Ray Raynor and friends, Garfield Goose and friends, Good ole Frazier Thomas he knew what we kids needed...Bozo Circus is on the air...too! Bozo to me is the only clown that I simply adore, that show was the best. I loved Cookie the clown, Wizzo the Wizard, etc...Thank you WGN.
WGN used to show classics like this. What happen to thier formatting? I woke up this morning thinking about this little jingle and I be damned it is Christmas time!
@andrewkirlin. Yes, I do too. I went to Stockton School in uptown. Everyday after school, I turned on Garfield Goose. It had all the shows that you could want: Suzy Snowflake, Klutch Cargo and many more. Gilligan's Island came on after that. Family Classics on Sunday afternoon, was also a show within a show. I too remember my family being perfect at that time- maybe it's just me. The early 70's & Chicago were the best years of my life.
I miss Chicago back in the early 70's. Ray Ranier, Bozo, the 3:30pm movie on ABC, Empire man, Joe Rizzo Ford, Earl Shive, Arason Furniture, Past Blue Ribbon Beer, B.J. and Dirty Dragon, Garfield Goose, Cuddly Duddly and Wiebolts and Marshall Fields and Company...and many more....It sucks to be in Florida now....I want to go home.
I first saw this on WJAC during a 70s Football game w/ Dad. Missed most of it due to flipping between games. But always wanted to see it in entirity. The charactors have that style of look. Just like decorations popular back then.(IE: Elf on the Shelve). Gotta give it to YouTube. Always fasinated me about these Holiday shorts. Now I'm able to see them in total.
I, too, am a WGN child! This was one of my favorites from Christmas. How wonderful that youtube makes it as close as my fingertips! Now, on to "Suzy Snowflake"!
I lived at 7200 south langley on chicago south side in the 1940s and 1950s.Seeing these three shows brought back wonderful memories of christmas and the early childrens tv shows. The poor children of today have missed so much. thank you again----Chicagosteve71@yahoo.com
Growing up in the WGN area in the 60's was magical! I'm originally from Lake Zurich, and we lived for Bozo and Garfield Goose. Such great memories! Thanks.
Animation by a very talented Chinese artisan, Mr. Wah Ming Chang, with Centaur Productions in 1956. Mr. Chang later achieved fame by creating props and sculpture for the "Star Trek" series. (This may explain the Asian-appearing Santa.) Centaur went on to make "Suzy Snowflake," originally sung by Rosemary Clooney in 1951, and "Frosty the Snowman," as seen in the '50s-'60s on WGN in Chicago.
I too grew up waiting for this to come on WGN shows like Ray Rayner, Bozo's Circus, and Garfield Goose every Christmas season. Things have changed so much. Take for instance the Narrator's line "Now listen my children and you shall hear, a story fantastic a story so queer..." Imagine how that'd go over in this day and age?
wow! I remember my mom saying "I have to record this on a 'tape', because I want you to watch it every Christmas. This the cartoons that I used to have when I was little." Now how funny is it that when YouTube started to be the it thing. I said to myself, "this is where they should have things like 'Hardrock, Coco and Joe!" Thank you ChicagoKidsTV. Maybe some day I will show my kids site for Christmas.
I, too, watched this as a kid on Johnstown's WJAC...it sure brings back wonderful, happy memories. I was thrilled to find this and Suzy Snowflake on here! There was another video shown along with these...'Mommy's Little Angel'. Anyone else remember it? Thank you to everyone who gave me the best Christmas present ever: a trip down Memory Lane!
I'm from Rhode Island and Suzie and Hardrock, Coco and Joe were regulars during the Christmas season on tv between regularly scheduled programs. Nice to be able to prove to the "kiddies" that they DO exist.
My mom grew up with Ray Raynor and Garfield Goose also. She was excited when we found Coco and Joe, Frosty the Snowman and Suzy Snowflake here on YouTube. We have now made it a tradition to watch them every year for the holidays. They are good songs you don't here often (besides Frosty) and this Frosty is a different take than the modern ones. This one is much happier in the end and is really cute to watch! Thank you!!
@CoalportBelivers2010 Yep! We got it way down in Emporium thanks to WJAC. The one I remember most is Suzy Snowflake; I guess I had forgotten this one but it seems familiar now that I've seen it.
i always liked the Hardrock, Coco, and Joe video the best i don't know why. I am 47 and grew up on Garfield Goose and Ray Raynor. The videos make me smile and yet somewhat sad that Christmas doesn't hold much specialness for me anymore.
there is a god. thank you fellow people who get the heeby jeebies looking at that santa. and i thank my parents for not subjecting me to such horrors.
I'm a native New Yorker and I only came across this stuff recently. It makes you feel good to be a kid again, especially around Christmas time. It almost makes me wish I lived in Chicago.
@CoalportBelivers2010 When I found it last year, I played it at least 5 times a day, for a long time !!! It's still a hit in Chicago every year at Christmas time !!
Grew up in the SE corner of Minnesota in the 80's and these three short films were played on the Bozo Show on WGN at Christmas. They made the Christmases of my youth seem a little more magical. True art, even if made only for the eyes of a 6 year old child.
You knew it was the Christmas season when they would play this on Garfield Goose on WGN. Of course there was Suzie Snowflake and Frosty. The streets surrounding my grammar school were decorated with fresh pine garland. When my friends and I sang Frosty, we would sing it with the 'thumpity thump thump" because it was the way we thought everyone sang it. Thank you for sharing this wonderful memory from a time when children were not bombarded with Christmas entertainment, making it special.
What a dreadful, freaky cartoon! Where did those names come from: Hardrock (from the 'hood, maybe?), Coco (fashion designer roots), and Joe (who just went along for the ride even though Santa had no use for him). Awful stuff! For those of later generations who complain about the cartoons you watch(ed), see what WE had to deal with back in the day!
I was a juvenile delinquent when this came out. Me and the other brats made up dirty words to the lyrics - something like Hardc-ck, Loco and Blow... Bad bad memories.
When I was a kid this was on WJAC TV-6 Johnstown Pa I remember being at my Pap's house and watching this just before pap would watch the evening news so many good memories of Christmas at Pap's and aunt Grace's this is a treasure for sure!
I was a child, but loved this...from WJAC TV6 in Johnstown,Pa. We got it on "rabbitears"...THERE WAS NO CABLE.......just snowy TV...but, this was a true gem....I LOVE IT!!
Santa has a disturbing Atilla the Hun look to him doesn't he? Never noticed as a kid but I sure do now! Yes Santa the Hun! I'll be good and go to bed! Don't burn my village!
@bummer1238 Atilla the Hun? Guess I didn't think of that. I was thinking the old Chinese curio shop owner I've seen in a dozen or so movies. "Gremlins" for one.
Ditto on the scary Santa comment. If I was a kid in Chicago back in the early '50's I might have fond memories of this. It's all too film noir for me.
These were shown during the BOZO Show at Christmas time. They quit showing them because the original film was so old it was becoming too damaged, it wasn't until the mid 90's that they were able to restore them enough to make copies to save... I was so glad they were able to save them, they are a true Chicago tradition, along with the BOZO Show...
i agree becous im going on 34 on the 17th of this month and i too rember them being on the BOZO show. i am verry happ that they restored them. that is a peace of tv history for sure.
they didn't have t his in Pittsburgh...wow. A friend of mine showed me the Suzy Snowflake one. I loved it. I love snow...and this animation one would have mesmerized me for years if I had seen it as a child. You lucky Chicagoans!!
Yes, me too -- this ran on our Waukegan TV set in those faraway days, and left me spellbound every time. Even then you could feel the old vanished world reaching into the modern one through this endearing little film. As Thomas Hardy put it in The Oxen, "So fair a fancy few would weave / In these years!"
@wyvernsc And your kids are probably in their teens or 20's who have grown up with the "lame" type of tv shows and movies that exist in this new generation.
i feel sorry for you. they dont make classics like this anymore i feel lucky to live in chicago and to have seen these cartoons as a kid. by the way my kids love them.
Researched, and it is Gene Autry. It is on one of his christmas collection albums, as "Hard Rock (with a space), Cocoa & Joe" ... In case anyone is interested
My parents put me onto this shit I think its funny when my mom says she was always so excited when she heard this before she went to sleep on xmas eve... lol
I grew up in South Bend,IN and was fortunate to see the Chicago broadcasts. My earliest memories were of TomTerrific and Gigantor, and Kukla, Fran, and Ollie. They had the best kids programming to date. Remember Garfield Goose?? Check them all out and share with your loved ones. Don't let these memories die!
I grew up in South Bend, too! This is one of my earliest memories, and I remember fighting with my sisters over which record we were going to order from Garfield Goose. "Suzy Snowflake" won.
I thought that Santa looked Japanese! I love this video when I was little. Even now it doesn't feel like christmas or winter until I see these old films.
Actually I never saw this until much later -- winter of 1992 on WGN! They were shown on a puppet / cartoon show called, I think, Fun Town, 10:30 weekday mornings. I took several VHS recordings of all three.
Wow....the TV station in western pennsylvania still show this short clip and also suzy snowflake on WTAJ Johstown. Just saw it in dec 2008. From what I understand it's only ever been shown in the Chicago and Pittsburgh area market. Thanx ChicagoKidsTV
i'm 47 and from the s.side of Chicago; I watched this, Suzy Snowflake and Frosty the Snowman on Garfield Goose and the Ray Raynor show when I was a kid!! I miss those days and my Grandma!!!! Thank You!! WGN channel 9
Wow what a great find! I loved watching this every Christmas as a kid on the Bozo show. I've been looking for this for years. Thanks for sharing this with the world.
OMG... I'm old enough to remember seeing this on TV! I always thought it was just a wee bit creepy for a fun & happy Christmas cartoon. Thanks for the post! :)
They aired this in central Pennsylvania, too, on WJAC (channel 6, originally channel 13). I always thought this was created by WJAC since no other station aired this. @wyvernsc And your kids are probably in their teens or 20's who have grown up with the "lame" type of tv shows and movies that exist in this new generation.

Researched, and it is Gene Autry. It is on one of his christmas collection albums, as "Hard Rock (with a space), Cocoa & Joe" ... In case anyone is interested

I wonder who the song is sung by. I grew up in WJAC territory and it just wasn't christmas without the choral concerts and these! Thanks for posting.

My parents put me onto this shit I think its funny when my mom says she was always so excited when she heard this before she went to sleep on xmas eve... lol

Considering when this was made,I cannot for the life of me figure out WHERE they got the idea to name one of them "Hardrock"!

I know Ha ha. My son had never seen this and he said, "why does Santa look like a vampire?"

I thought that Santa looked Japanese! I love this video when I was little. Even now it doesn't feel like christmas or winter until I see these old films.

Is hardrock, coco, and joe all three brothers?
haasric 2 years ago
haasric - Yeah, I assumed they were brothers.
