  • Beautiful. I have marched to the music and it is always stirring and a good rythum for a 20 inch pace.

  • It was Suvla Bay not Sulva; Eric Bogle's version is much better; raw and spare without the melodramatic strings. War is hell but it is better than the alternative, slavery under the heel of an alien ideology, The following words from Ataturk will never make up for the loss of life but they are beautiful " To those heroes that shed their blood..you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country, and are in peace; having lost your lives on this land you have become our sons as well. "

  • Very Moving!

  • Magnificent song! So proud and happy to be Australian!

"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me..."

except (no offence) I feel that this song should be sung by an Australian not an Englishman, sorry :/

regardless, a very moving song and captures the essence of war very very well.

  • I've seen grown men weep when I sing this incredibly sad song. No, it wasn't my singing!

  • I've sung it for 30 years and it still gets to me.

  • Eric Bogle, who wrote this song told me that he really likes my version.

  • Beautiful version mate - thanks for uploading.

  • If you can watch this without shedding a tear, you have not heart.

  • well done. Thanks

  • I'm not interested in doing that but I think basically the clip is good but its spoiled by incorrect lyrics...instead of obtaining the correct ones you've guessed them...anyone can get them off the net. There is no need to try and figure them out and have them wrong...and its not grammar or spelling..the lyrics are incorrect...they dont always match what the guy is singing!!!

  • subtitled lyrics still are not correct

  • @lonestarbutterfly1 Ah well, I would suggest you make your own clip and put the correct subtitles in.

  • Thank you for Tribute.I have always been very proud of the sacrifices my two Uncles Ron and George gave for Australia. I never got to meet them but hold them in high Esteem as I do for all the soldiers who returned home. Lest we Forget

  • very sad, very well done , I wonder if we'll ever learn something from our past. Surely war with all od its consequences is not a solution, we should find a better way.....

  • Prize ANZAC troopers, they are true heroes who answered the call of their nation with their life and blood.

And down with British :( they never give enough support to the troopers they called in from colones, more then likely they don't even care about the colones troopers...

  • Again, I want to tell rodcwahr who posted this video how much I appreciate the effort that went into it. It takes my breath away. Those in the comment thread who are checking for spelling and grammar might have very well missed the point.

  • We have still not woken up about the business called war. A little girl of 8 came close when she asked a ww11 veteran a simple question which he could not answer but only could cry.

    Her question was.

If they held a war tomorrow and nobody came, what would happen??

  • a very powerful story.

  • Now WE march for THEM. Lest we forget!

  • So very moving to read the words as you watch the vision and beautifully sung

  • Eric Bogle sings "we buried ours and the Turks buried theirs",not burned.

  • Said all I had to say about your original upload. All I can add is that this even better! Thank you.

  • I listen to this song every remembrance day and think about all the young men lost or wounded

  • just wondering why you would put in a photo of nicole & hugh? i know they are aussie's, but have nothing to do with this song. IMO.

  • Much nicer version .. thank you! One small point - at the 1:17 mark - the lyrics should be "and amid all the cheers ... " No biggie.

  • Thank you for this ~ ODE to PEACE ~ sadly beautiful!

  • Nothing to add. The song and the video say it much better than I ever could imagine to try. Thank you for posting.

  • Tears in my eyes! Thanks!

  • I love the way you have done this song, Thanks

  • I went to sulva bay to see the monument there today, I weep everytime I think of the 500,000 on both sides who died. I thought I was strong before that day, but now I know I'm nothing compared to those men. God bless us all so we no more war.

  • Moving. Touches me.

  • Thanks for this clip, it is one of the best versions i ever heard. This is special to me as my Grandfather was wounded by the Turks during WW1.

  • Thank you for your effort to produce a very worth-while video, with a very moving song. A song I wish wasn't needed to be written.

  • I type through tears.

The ANZAC troops were both Aussie and Kiwi. I was born to US parents in Auckland and we returned to the US 2 years later. Some trace of Kiwi lives in my heart.

The useless pain continues. It seems the only difference over the ages is the increasingly anonymous efficiency of the weapons of slaughter: from face-to-face combat to bomb-dropping drones.

(I hate to pick nits, but the lyric is "to hump tent and pegs," hump meaning carry or tote.)

  • just brilliant, who needs proper spelling as long as the word are song right. thankyou very much,

  • Beautifully done and very moving. When you have time you should tidy up the few spelling mistakes on the subtitles, but it didn't detract from the experience.

  • This takes my breath away every time I play it. Thank you so much for the effort put forth in posting it and for the revision.

  • Respect for your effort in creating this tribute.

    Lest We Forget

  • With deep respect ,and in honour of those brave young Turks and Australians who died by the thousands at Suvla Bay ,the correct spelling of the name of the place is mandatory. It's simply a matter of respect for the young sons and daughters of Australia and Turkey as well , who fell there in a tremendous waste of human life

  • "Heroes who shed their blood in the territory of this country!

You are now here, on the soil of a friendly country. Sleep in peace. You and our soldiers lie side by side. Dear mothers, who sent their sons from far away lands to this war! Wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom. They will sleep in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they now have become our sons as well."

    M.K. Ataturk

  • Nice job putting this together. Powerful lyrics.

I find three chord versions of this song in A, E and D, so I will use this to help me learn the guitar.

  • "It's a good thing war is so terrible, lest we become fond of it." Robert E. Lee.

  • A wonderful song by Eric Bogle, an Australian born in Scotland. This is a nice version, though I prefer the Liam Clancy/Tommy Makem live recording. Thanks for bringing this to us.

  • Thanks for this wonderful redition of this superb song. What a great voice this guy has. I also like the other video. Best wishes. Irene.

  • wonderfully done... Thanks

  • Like mentioned below, great remake! Beautifully done! Pity about the rude comments on the previous version - try to pay them no mind. Thanks for the improvements!

  • Very lovely song, shows what wars can do.

  • Very beautiful, emotional song. The veterans of WWI are now all gone, but this song will help to remember the hell they went through.

  • "War would end if the dead could return." Stanley Baldwin.

  • One of the most moving songs I have ever heard. Very beautiful and very sad.

  • Heard this song for the first time two days ago and have not stopped singing it since. A powerful song that reminds us all of the futility of war. When first reading through the word I had to dry my eyes before I could finish.

  • A powerful message in this song and sung by a brilliant singer. Excellent video and images. THANKS FOR SHARING, C.W.

  • this song, tells an entire story, a sad story...Oh, God, please, end up those wars !

  • 5:07 it looks like american units with the M1 helmet WWII

  • Comment removed

  • Great remake m8. Thumbs up !

  • If every mother saw this, there would be a great outcry against war by them all.

  • Thank for the song.

If I could sing this I would have to be be a lot stronger than I am.

  • Agree totally that this is a powerful and beautiful song. One of the most powerful anti-war ballads since "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," and echoes similar sentiments. Gives me, as an older American, a great appreciation for the Australian soldiers who performed their duty. Cannot say enough about this song. Bravo !

  • One of the most powerful songs ever written and beautifully sung by John McDermott. The video was so lovingly put together - a real tribute. Thanks so much. It's moving around now on FB. Was posted on Poet Laurence Overmire's page.

  • much clearer version mate...well done.....

but it does show us what we(man) are capable of.....no matter what part of our existence we look at,its been plagued by war...death and mindless murder.....

  • This beautifully poignant song was written by a bloke named Eric Bogle, and Australian Folk Singer/Songwriter. More information about Eric, as well as some more of his songs, is available on the International War Veterans Poetry Archives (IWVPA)
