@cardboardodyssey if you're bad at aiming like wind is, and you use wrangler, it's pretty good, the main aim with it is to knock uber off medics. but both weapons are bad compared to the normal shotgun when playing offensive engineer, if you like to be able to get close to the enemy and be able to fight them. it means you have the better odds against a scout etc.

Personally, I don't see the purpose of playing as this style of Engineer. You're not building dispensers nor upgrading teleporters. There are classes better at killing people than an Engineer with a Gunslinger. Although I can respect this style.

I think setting up a teleporter near the front and putting a normal sentry behind the teleporter is a more effective and useful way to play the class.

The guide is great, but I strongly diagree with using the wrangler along with the gunslinger. You're pistol is the most important weapon when it comes to gunslinger and frontier justice, as it can help you gain the kills you're sentry needs to get those juicy revenge crits.

i prefer the widowmaker/pistol/gunslinger setup. i find that my mini-sentries often only harass and assist me in getting kills. rarely does it get enough kills for a useable amount of revenge crits. offensive engies usually have a lot of metal (requires map knowledge for ammo pack locations) so i use the widowmaker cuz im a pretty good shot with it. (it seems like it does more damage and has a tighter cone of fire) i use pistol if i run out of widowmaker ammo. (obviously if i use a wrangler wit

you are very offensive with your sentries...typically I sit them in a corner and I "aggro" my prey and kinda lure them back into the firing line of my sentry so it just eats away at them...get lots of assits/kills when they don't know its there.

Excellent guide, certainly helped me out. Just a question, though. Obviously the gameplay and video is old, but do you think the new Engie shotgun, the Widowmaker, is any good for offensive engineering? or any engineering?

@xhunter143 I'd only use both of the new Deus Ex weapons defensively. They both require a steady supply of metal, which you would probably better spend on minisentries

@WindyPower Although that sounds right i'd like to open an contrast to your statement. the widow maker does more damage than the other two shotguns. so you get your money's worth unlike the frontier justice which only gets a critical if your sentry gets a kill and destroyed. i tend to continuously get kills with my sentry while im getting stock pile so it seems ok to us eif you always have a reserve 100 for a mini sentry hope it helped.

Your guide was one of the things that inspired me to try the engineer out. I used to view engis solely as largely immobile prey, or pests at best - but these days I'm having fun dropping sneaky teleports in dark corners of enemy bases, and dropping sentries (mini- and otherwise) in tricky locations to shoot scouts out of the air. Mobile, thinking engineer is kredit to team!

The problem is when no one bothers to check on your buildings when you go hunting metal. Hard to turn the tide as engi :(.

@WindyPower Your guide spurred me out of the 3 minute long tradition of classic denfending. I love your guide. Just wondering, I tried doing this in arena but it kinda stops working when it blows up. I can pick up more metal sure but by then I'm kinda useless after a 2nd sentry gun. Is there any good way to counter a couple of no good pyros/scouts/Demomen/Soldier/h­eavies? I would love to distract them while shooting them but they chew through metal quickly and a pistol ain't as big of a weapon.

@Chococlass33 I rarely play arena so I can't really tell, but really, if you're playing as Engineer on arena, no matter offensive/defensive, the most important building to keep up is probably the Dispenser. Health is scarce in Arena, and on top of that it generates that precious metal you need to survive

@RedHunterProductions 1. Did you mean "illegal"? I don't think Valve would have made a scripting system for the game if they didn't want people to use it. Or did you mean "illegible"? In which case yes, my config is not the easiest thing to read, but that's normal, it's code.

the best offensive technic is very easy and effective: bulid level 3 sentry near spawn so u get it upgraded fast, then pick it up and wait for a good moment to plant on enemy territory. ive tested it several times, this technic looks stupid, but theres a one chance out of five to get over 10 kills in the first minute.

I think the best sets are FJ / Pistol and Shotgun / Wrangler, because Mini SGs, unlike the normal SGs, are made to be destroyed, and when that happens even if they have accumulated only 1 kill, you still have two crits. However, the FJ must be used with the Pistol, because when the 3 shells run out and the enemy is still alive, you can finish him with the Pistol. Otherwise you can use the base Shotgun + the Wrangler, so you have 6 shells to kill enemies and without the need of the Pistol

Default Shotgun - 6 shots, deals random crits

Frontier Justice - 3 shots, no random crits, gives you revenge crits if your sentry gun blew up with kills/assists

A Important tip for mini sentrys: Place them behind gates, because soldiers cannot destroy them with sticky and demo has sometimes problem with the aim at then, and heavys minigun is doing nothing against a good placed mini sentry

By the way, I believe that the teleporter is hardly as useful in a lot of maps... Like, I can understand its use in Goldrush offensive engineering, where the capture points and spawns are fixed, but in certain maps like fastlane, badlands and so forth it's actually more like a nuisance than a helpful tool. Especially if you're winning, you'd have to constantly replace or relocate it, sucking away precious seconds.

@TehFlyingGerman Watch the weapon demonstration series on the wiki to know how the game works, play on 24/7 2fort servers to learn engineer (on these servers, nobody cares about capping the intelligence, so you have a lot of time to build and see how your machinery works, but don't expect a fun game on those servers), then move on to real servers and practice~

in my opinion (i'm a very nice offensive engi |D) shotgun+Wrang+gs is perfect becouse a minisentry can't kill people without help! but the FJ is good too but is better with the pistol if you got to reload, the FJ looks like a good offensive engi weapon but.. you have to reload too much so i don't use it

Nice video ya got there! I enjoyed this. Im starting to play engineer more and have a roaming playstyle. I dont use the gunslinger since I think its a tad weak. I just build up a level 1 and move it in a nice ambush spot. I use the shotgun since my sentry gets little kills. Im pretty unstoppable by spies too since he's my main class and I know all the ins and outs. >=D

you should NEVER use frontier justice with wrangler and mini sg. because you essentially now only have 3 shells standing between u and death. its a bit iffy even using it with pistol, your mini-sg doesnt get that many kills to get revenge crits.

@Scyfed Yes, the Frontier Justice is the only weapon I'm hesitant about, to be honest. I was using it because the Engineer Update had just been released and wanted the achievement for it. I think the regular Shotgun is better too. I just wish it looked cooler though, because the Frontier Justice is just badass.

@WindyPower Great video though I would agree that FJ + Wrang + GS is not a safe choice. Personally I wouldn't use the Wrangler with the MS only because it discourages flanking ploys... Pistol is the best. As for Shotgun/FJ there are a lot of pros/cons to each. Great video btw thanks for reading my site =D

@wingspantt Thanks :3 I disagree that the Wrangler discourages flanking though, as you can use it to keep your enemies distracted looking at your Sentry Gun while you sneak up on them.
